Norma Elaine Crider, age 80 of Mt. Vernon, went to be with her Lord at 10:06 p.m. Friday, October, 11 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. Norma was born in Woodlawn, IL on July 13, 1933 the daughter of Roscoe and Thelma (Beaver) Troutt. She had one brother Gene Troutt. She married Robert Crider and he survives in Mt. Vernon. From this union they brought four children, into the Lord: Terry, Susan, Amanda and Rachel. Norma was a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodlawn. She was a wonderful cook, teacher and spiritual leader of her home. She led her children to know her Lord and Savior. She was always a prayer warrior for her family, grandchildren and anyone she heard of that needed prayer. She lived a quiet life but prayed for family and friends and neighbors fervently without ceasing behind the scenes. She was an avid reader and loved her pet cats. She is survived by her children Terry Crider, Susan Crider and Amanda Crider all of Mt. Vernon and Rachel Austin and husband Bryan of Texico, IL; and also two grandchildren, Levi Austin, and Lily Austin. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Gene Troutt. Funeral services for Norma Crider will be held at 11 Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Woodlawn with Rev. Merle Fullerton and her son-in-law Rev. Bryan Austin officiating. The Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the Church. Burial will follow at Old Union Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. SESSER -- Jo Ann "MeMe" Brown, 70, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital after an almost five-year battle with leukemia. She worked for Techna-Color in Pinckneyville. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Jo Ann was born July 15, 1943, in Du Quoin to Albert and Anna (Szczeblewski) Gerstenschlager. She married Kenneth Brown on May 15, 1965, and he preceded her in death Nov. 12, 2005. Survivors include children, Kenneth L. and Kelly Brown of Benton, Rhonda Lynn and Todd Hawkins of Mulkeytown and Gregg L. and Michelle Brown of Dix; grandchildren, Andrew Brown, Mallory Brown, Taylor Hawkins, Gage Hawkins, Gunner Hawkins, Dylan Brown and Kaitlyn Brown; and sisters, Judy Hoffman of Du Bois and Jean and Robert Zoeckler of Du Bois. Una Pearl Periman, 69, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, in Herrin Hospital.She was born Feb. 15, 1944, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Eugene and Peg (March) Hinderer.She married Ronald Kent Periman on June 20, 1964, in Donoho Prairie Christian Church, and he survives her in West Frankfort.Mrs. Periman graduated from Salem High School and attended Lincoln Christian College, and was a cook. She was a member of First Christian Church in West Frankfort.In addition to her husband, Ronald Kent Periman of West Frankfort, she is survived by two sons, Darren Periman and wife, Kristie of Walnut Hill, and Mike Periman and wife, Starla, of West Frankfort; five grandchildren, R.J. Shirley was born on Tuesday, August 16, 1938 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois the daughter of the late John Wesley and Stella Mae (Arnold) Hatchett. Vern M. Showers, Sr., 61, of Belle Rive and formerly of Mt. Vernon and Opdyke, died 8:36 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his home in Belle Rive. He was born Thursday, Jan. 24, 1952, in St. Louis, the son of Russell Qugethem and Geneva Showers. Vern was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and was a truck driver until retiring. Vernon; three granddaughters, Anna, Samantha and Morgan; two grandsons, Gage and Braden; sister, Marie Hamilton of Belle Rive; and several nieces and nephews. Marlin Eater, 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully at 4:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Mount Vernon Health Care Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. His kind and generous spirit will be missed. He was born Tuesday, February 10, 1920 to James Jonas and Mary Jane (Pace) Eater. He was the grandson of John W. and Mary Eliza (Piper) Eater and William H. and Cassie Anna (Harvey) Pace. On May 17, 1943 he married Nelda Dredge in New York City, New York. Their wedding pictures were featured in Life Magazine with a sequel on their 10th anniversary. She preceded him in death on October 8, 2007. Surviving family members include two Daughters: Janice Cherry and husband John and Becky Irvin and husband Roger all of Mount Vernon, Illinois; Grandchildren: Jadie Thomas and husband David of Brentwood, Tennessee, Ryan Irvin and his wife Nicole of Bartlett, Tennessee, and Todd Irvin of Pontoon Beach, Illinois; Step Grandchildren: Matt Cherry and wife Kristen and Rhonda Vessell and husband Jerry all of Brentwood, Tennessee; Great-Grandchildren: Torin and Parker Marlin Thomas, Savannah Vessell, Dalton and Kayce Irvin, and Sabrina Cherry all of Brentwood, Tennessee; Brother: Arthur Eater and wife Bonnadine of Willow Springs, North Carolina; Sister-in-Law: Bernice Breeze and Brother-in-Law: Bob Draege both of Mount Vernon; and several Nieces and Nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Wife: Mary Jane Eater; Sister: Mildred Eater; Brothers and Sisters-in-Law: Keith and Gertie Eater, Olen and Edith Eater; Sister-in-Law Jean Draege; Brother-in-Law: Verne Breeze; and Step Grandson: Rodney Irvin. Charles Marlin Eater graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School in 1939 and later in life took classes from Rend Lake College and Southern Illinois University. He served in the United States Army’s 4th Infantry Division during World War II from January 1942 to September 1945. He was a Staff Sergeant with Headquarters Unit, landing before dawn on D-Day in Normandy, France. He earned a Presidential Citation for helping secure Utah Beach. He was wounded thirty days later on the front lines of battle, awarded a Purple Heart, and sent to England for recovery. He then returned to serving in Germany in the Battle of the Bulge (also known as the Ardennes Offensive) with the 4th Infantry Division receiving a Bronze Star, two Oak Leaf Clusters for service beyond the call of duty, and a Combat Infantry Badge. He was also present in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich, Germany. At the end of World War II Marlin returned to Mount Vernon, bought a farm, worked nights in the oil fields and farmed during the day. He retired in 1982. He had a special talent in art and received many awards and recognitions for his work in oil painting. Several of his paintings were juried and displayed at the Southern Illinois Art and Artisans Center and shipped across the United States. He was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, song leader, and teacher from 1955 until failing health. He and Nelda were awarded the Dedicated and Outstanding Service Award by New Hope Church. FUNERAL SERVICES: will be held at 1:00 P.M. She married George Washington Wolfe on November 19, 1967 in Flora, Illinois. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1985. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, the ocean, and horses. She was a member of Community of Christ Church – formerly known as Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – where she was well known for sending church bulletins away to members in college and overseas in the Armed Forces. Henry B. Arnold, 95, of Wayne City, died 7:09 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.He was born June 11, 1918, in Inland, Ky., the son of Henry and Elizabeth Wheeler Arnold. He married Doris Barnard Draper and she survives in Wayne City.He worked at car shops and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Ray Arnold and Festus, Mo. ; stepdaughter, Sandy Simpson of Mt. Ernest "Ernie " Meador, age 91 of Walnut Hill passed away Monday September 30, 2013 at the St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia, Illinois. Mr. Meador was a heavy equipment operator and had worked for many years for the White Construction Company until his retirement. He was of the Pentecostal faith and an avid St. Louis Cardinal's fan. He loved living in the country , taking care of his lawn and home. Most of all he loved his wife; his children; and grandchildren. Funeral Services for Ernest "Ernie" Meador will be held Thursday October 3rd 1:00 P.M. at the L. R. Osborn & Son Funeral Home with the Pastor Larry Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at the Palestine Cemetery near Kell. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-8 P.M.at the L. R. Osborn & Son Funeral Home in Kell.
