TATE, FRANCIS, TATE, WILLIAM, HILMACK, MARY AND SELBY, RHODA: My wifes gg grandparents were William Tate and Rhoda Selby. William was born in Nicholas County, Ky on 14 Aug, 1794, married Rhoda Selby (born about 1797 in Worcester County, Md) in Harrison Co., Ky on 2 Mar 1820. They moved from there to Rush County, Indiana and eventually to Jasper County, Illinois by 1851 where Rhoda died 2 Jan 1878 and William on 27 Nov, 1887. Family History indicates that Francis and Mary Tate were his parents; however, I have never been able to prove that. Francis married Mary in Bourbon Co., Ky on 2 Nov, 1795 (after Williams supposed birth). Francis is shown in the Nicholas Co, Ky Tax Records for 1800 through 1807. Mary shows up in the 1810 Harrison County, Ky census without an adult male, but several children, none over the age of 10. Mary remarried to Samuel Caswell in Harrison Co in 1811 and died there in Feb 1839. Can anyone shed any more light on this Francis Tate and Mary Hilmack? MCNEW, WILLIAM: According to the 1860 Gallia County, Ohio census William McNew (my wifes gg grandfather) was born about 1835 in Ohio. He lived in Harrison Township and was a Farm Laborer. He married Elizabeth Boster, daughter of John Boster in Gallia Co. 31 July, 1853 and had at least four children; Allison, b-abt 1855; Sylvester, b-3 Feb, 1858; Winfield, b-26 Jan, 1860 and Savannah, B-27 Sept, 1862. By 1870 Elizabeth and her children (and a brother William Boster) were in Jasper County, Illinois without William. According to a Guardianship Petition dated Sept 1868 (in Jasper County) William is awarded Guardianship of Sylvester, Winfield and Savannah (but no Allison). The Petition states that the children have about four Hundred Dollars in Expectancy from the US Government. This probably means that Williams death was the result of the Civil War, but I have not proven that. Any information that would shed light on who William McNew was, who his ancestors were, where he came from as well as the circumstances of his death would be appreciated. Even(sic) and Jane Phillips Family Bible was copied in April, 1986 by Donna M Wilson of Canton, Ohio whos husband is a descandant of Evan and Jane Philips. The entries relating to their children follow: ANN PHILLIPS daughter of EVEN and JANE PHILLIPS was born the 5th day of April and the 7th day of the week about 4 O. Clock in the morning in the year of our Lord 1783. DAVID AND ENOCH PHILLIPS was born the 22nd day of October the first day of the week about 10 O Clock in the morning 1786. JANE PHILLIPS was born the 2nd day of March the 4th day of the week in the year of our Lord 1791. MARY PHILLIPS daughter of EVEN AND JANE PHILLIPS was born the 11th day of January the 7th day of the week about 4 O Clock in the morning in the year 1794. WILLIAM PHILLIPS was born the 5th day of January and the 5th day of the week about nine O Clock in the morning in the year of our Lord 1797. EVEN PHILLIPS was born the 1st day of September and the 1st day of the week in the year of our Lord 1799. JOHN PHILLIPS was born the 2nd day of October and the 7th day of the week in the year of our Lord 1802. MATILDA PHILLIPS was born February the 4th day of the month and the 4th day of the week in the year of our Lord 1807. R. (There is no explanation for this R) The Ann shown is most probably Ruhanna Phillips since other information indicates 1783 is appropriate for her birth year and both Will and Deed records prove Ruhanna as a daughter of Evan and Jane Phillips. Nancy Phillips is not shown in this Bible; however, both Evan and Jane Phillips acknowledge her as heir (Jane refers to her as her daughter in her will). I would like to communicate with any descendants of Evan and Jane Philips. He was born about 1760, lived in Ohio County, Vi (WV) in the 1780 to mid 1790's and moved to Belmont County, Ohio before 1800 and died there about Jan 1824. Jane (Unknown) Philips died about June 1825. Their son David Philips lived in Guernsey County, Ohio and his son Evan Philips (my gg grandfather)moved to Richland/ Jasper County, Illinois about 1854 where his family remained until today. Those of you who are looking for older obits........do you know about the IL-TRACES-L list? You can subscribe to that list, too!!! People are constantly entering older obits as they find them. Check out the information below. IL-TRACES-L@rootsweb.com The Illinois Traces list is not a query or surname list, but a list to which one may submit transcribed information including obituaries, out of copyright biographies, wills, and other items which will then be entered under the appropriate counties in the ILGenWeb Project archives. You can reach the archives by going to http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb Then select your state of interest from the menu...there are LOTS of great files in there, many which came from the IL-Traces-L@rootsweb.com submissions. To subscribe, send a message to: IL-Traces-L-request@rootsweb.com Put the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the body of the message. Nothing else; just the one word. Leave the subject line blank. Hope this helps those of you looking for older obits. Hello, this is my first posting to the list. I am looking for information on the family of ABRAHAM and HARRIET COX. Both were born ca. 1801, Abraham in Kentucky and Harriet in Connecticut. They lived in Sullivan county Indiana for many years, appearing in Jasper county IL for the 1870 and 1880 censuses. In 1880, Abram's parents were listed as being born in PA, and both Harriet's folks in Connecticut. Children of this couple include: William, Rachel, Redmond, Smithy, Amos. Abraham and Harriet were listed in the "History of Cumberland and Jasper counties", 1884, as residents of Willow Hill Township, having been married over 60 years. I think other lines of mine were residents of Jasper county as well, ie. JOSEPH CUMMINS, who lived in North Muddy Township in 1860, and some of my BENEFIELS from Sullivan county Indiana passed through there as well. I look forward to hearing from anyone on these families. Thanks. Les Campbell chemyst@flash.net
