Gwen, I'm not sure about what book covers what area. There is nothing in the 1844-1906 book to indicate where the people were from or where buried. the 1904-1915 book looks like it has folks from Murphysboro, Carbondale, Makanda and all over. The 1844-1915 book has a Codlia E. Hobbs listed who died in September of 1879 at the age of 24. There is no indication where she was from or where she is buried. The county clerk might have that information. I don't have any Hobbs listed in the 1904-1915 book. There is a Mrs. Anna Duncan listed in the 1844-1906 book along with an Annie Duncan. There is no date of death given for Mrs. Anna Duncan but the date of death given for Annie is September 1879 at the age of 2 (guess this isn't yours either). There are also several other Duncans listed (Barbara, Dilla, Margaret, Mary Alice and William). Does any of this help. Thanks you, I have learned that Arthur Evan's mother may have been Elva Crain Pugh as her first husband David A. Pugh died 6 Feb. 1901. This was something I didn't know when I first asked for Arthur Evan's parents. I still do not have any idea what his father's first name might have been. Hi Janis, I have a couple of small suggestions for you that might help. First, it might be helpful in regards to who Elias Neace's parents were, to look closely at candidates who share the same given name as Elias' children. Often at that time children were named after the parents of both the father and mother. In regard to Vincent Wheat and Jackson Neace, a look at the 1865 military census for Jackson County might be helpful. All men 16 and over fit for duty were listed. The Jackson Co. list is on-line somewhere, perhaps the Trails page. What I have found with the Jackson list is that frequently names are misspelled or mistranscribed, so look at the names with that in mind. Maybe Vincent is there. If Elias Neace died while they resided in Jackson County and left minor children and any property at all, then there should be a guardianship record in the county Circuit Court records. Although she was the mother, Elizabeth (or a male friend or relative) would have had to be appointed their guardian. There might also be a probate file for Elias, and if so, it could hold numerous family history clues. Both probates and guardianship records are at IRAD, and may also be on LDS films. A check of the deed records for members of these families might also prove illuminating. Often when a widow sold land her husband had purchased, the children are all listed as heirs to that land in the deed record. Same with Elizabeth, if she owned land at her death, her heirs would've inherited it jointly and therefore would have to sell it jointly, and all their names be listed in the deed. Deeds are at IRAD too. If Elizabeth had property and/or a personal estate worth much, she may also have a probate file, which should give you at least an approximate death date., and would name all of her surviving children, and grandchildren of any who were deceased. Since you know Jackson was wounded in the Civil War, he must have had a pension file. Have you sent to NARA for it? Sometimes there is only info on the soldier and his wife and children and it contains no new info, but every once in awhile I get one that is chock full of family history helps. For instance, the elderly mother of a vet was interviewed and stated her age and where her son was born and when, etc. A Bible record was consulted to provide names and dates of all the vet's children, etc.... And lastly, since Sarah Jane was married in 1882, that might be within the time range when detailed marriage licenses were filled out by the parties and they are on the back side of the marriage record. They give parent's names, birthplaces, etc. Check with the county clerk about that. There is a Christopher Neace on the 1860 cens in tsp 10, 3 W. I will send you the image in a separate email. Good luck with your research! Juli Claussen Search & Genealogy Services Murphysboro, IL ----- Original Message ----- From: Janis G. To: ILJACKSO-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, January 06, 2007 2:02 PM Subject: [ILJACKSO] Neace family in Jackson Co. Hello fellow researchers! I am researching the Neace/Niece/Nease family from Jackson Co. Here are a few things I would like to know:
Hello fellow researchers! I am researching the Neace/Niece/Nease family from Jackson Co. Here are a few things I would like to know: Elias Niece b. 13 Apr 1816, d. 9 Feb 1853, married to Elizabeth Nation (?), b. about 1817. The 1850 census lists Elias' birthplace as Kentucky. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHERE IN KY HE CAME FROM AND TO WHICH KY NEACE FAMILY HE BELONGS. According to the 1850 census, they had 6 children: William (ca. 1836), Henry (ca. 1838), Christopher (ca. 1840), Jackson Columbus (20 Sep 1843), Eli (ca. 1845), and Elisabeth (ca. 1848). The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index lists an Elizabeth Neece marrying a Vincent Wheat on 19 Jun 1861, so I think Elizabeth may have remarried after Elias' death. I am unable to find any other record of Vincent Wheat. I do find an Elizabeth Wheat, Widow, born in KY on the 1870 census in Jackson Co. Living with her are Jackson (age 24), James (age 16), Sarah (age 9) and Daniel (age 7). Since I am unable to locate Jackson Neace anywhere, I am inclined to believe this is my Elizabeth and that Jackson is listed as Wheat, rather than Neace. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND ANY INFORMATION ON VINCENT WHEAT AND ANYTHING THAT WOULD HELP PROVE THIS IS MY JACKSON LIVING IN THIS FAMILY. I WOULD LIKE TO LOCATE ELIZABETH NEACE AND ANY CHILDREN, INCLUDING SON JACKSON ON THE 1860 CENSUS. As mentioned above, I think I have located them on the 1870 census. I would also like to find out the date of Elizabeth's death, probably between 1870 and 1880. The 1880 census shows J.C. Neace (Jackson), age 35, living with wife Mary, age 25 and sons Samuel E., (age 2), William H. (age 3/12), daughter, Sarah Jane (age 18) and nephews, Daniel C. (age 16) and Martin (age 17). It is unlikely that Sarah Jane is actually his daughter, if her age is 18. Jackson joined the Union Army in 1861, shortly before he turned 18, was wounded soon afterwards and had his leg amputated. IS THIS SARAH JANE THE SARAH WHEAT LISTED ON THE 1860 CENSUS? Sarah Wheat would probably have been his half-sister (or maybe step-sister) so he may have assumed responsibility for her when his mother died, if so she may have been called his daughter. A Sarah Jane Neace is listed on the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index as marrying Joseph Quillman on 20 Apr 1882. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THIS QUILLMAN FAMILY? Any information that could shed light on any of my questions, or any information about new areas to research would be very much appreciated! Happy searching! Janis G.
Would like to find obituary, or anything else regarding Della's death. I have found headstone, but can't find where she died at. She is buried in Evergreen cemetery in Makanda, IL. Born Jan. 31, 1881; died March 1, 1917 according to headstone. Thanks for your generosity, Lynn
