    3. Tom, Thanks for calling my attention to this. I knew that John Orrel sounded familiar, but I couldn't figure out where I had heard it. I am checking with my cousin to see if this is the same John Orrel. To answer your first question, the image I received from my cousin actually came from FHL film # 968929, Jackson County, Illinois Marriage register V 1-3, 1878-1915. 1. [ILJACKSON] Obtaining Copies of Illinois Death Certificates for the Period 1916 - 1950
    2. Karima
    3. As many of you are aware, because of budget problems, the state of Illinois is no longer able to provide death certificates by mail. However, the Illinois State Genealogical Society has established as a fund raiser for the Society and to assist members and researchers who live out of state or do not have access to the Archives facility, a process for obtaining the certificates. For some counties this is cheaper than going to the County Clerk. In other counties it is not. For more information go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsgs/projects/deathcerts.html Good luck with your search. Karima --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [ILJACKSON] Little Egypt Heritage, 11 May 2003, Vol 2 #19
    2. Bill
    3. Little Egypt Heritage Articles Stories of Southern Illinois (c) Bill Oliver 11 May 2003 Vol 2 Issue: #19 ISBN: pending Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen of Little Egypt, The Merriam-Webster dictionary says that nostalgia is a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for the return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition; And, that memories are, among other things, particular acts of recall or recollections, or images or impressions of one that is remembered, such as fond memories of one's youth. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?? That was one of our favorite discussion topics when we were tired and didn't want to study any more. We would leave our dorm rooms and gather at the local college hangout and "relax". While reading this week, a variant question came to my mind — which came first; the hunt for ancestors or the hunt for their belongings.?? Sometimes it is called antique hunting or shopping, but on my budget it more likely is called "flea- marketing" or "garage sales". Well, it may be "fleaing" to some of us but is has become very fashionable by celebrities. Even fashion designers are "stitching" flea touches to their very pricy clothes. Once while walking a neighborhood "garage sale", I saw a "Skippy" wagon for sale. I had one when I was but a tad of a lad. In fact, it still hangs by its handle out in my garage. Even in the terrible shape that it is in, I can't yet bear to give it up. It has traveled everywhere with me; Dad was a US Marine, so that includes overseas. My Grandpa made an extension for the handle so it fit my tall frame when I was in my early teens growing spurt. I pulled ice in it in Bermuda and groceries in North Carolina. In addition, our boys rode in it when their mother went to the milk store or the A&P Grocery. When visiting my maternal Grandmother, my sister and cousins often headed straight for the cookie jar sitting in the pass-through window sill in the kitchen for a flour coated "sugar cookie". That cookie jar was the shape of a broad kindly smiling monk holding up two fingers. Across his robe were the words "Thou Shalt Not Steal". I have that cookie jar setting on my bureau. It can't be used for holding cookies any more because water seeped past the glaze into the bisque. Once while we were visiting our Father, my sister and I were visiting shops in Capistrano, and I discovered another of those Red Wing cookie jars and my sister bought it. She paid ten or less dollars for it. Recently I found another one in "collectibles" establishment in the mid-west. It was chipped around the edges and they want sixty dollars for it. <sigh> It's now a collectable. My paternal Grandmother once gave me a cow's horn that she used to blow when she wanted to call Grandpa in from the fields for meals. The horn is old and dry and I'm afraid to blow it very hard any more for fear of splitting it. But, hanging there on the wall, it reminds me of the many stories that she would tell of her earlier life. For instance, when she and Grandpa were first married, they lived with Grandpa's Uncle Monroe. Grandpa farmed the land and Grandma took care of the house and cooking. Uncle Monroe liked his daily ‘cornpone'; warm for breakfast and cold for the other two meals. Uncle Monroe must have had a "grand" house according to Grandma. The wooden floors were bleached clean by a method sailors call "holystoning". <http://www.bb62museum.org/images/Hart/holystoning.html> Grandma said she did it on her knees. Robert Watson recorded in his Civil War Diary the often "holystoning of spar decks". Dad was stationed in Bermuda once and we moved there to be with him. He often served as Sergeant of the Guard on Military Police Duty. He was friendly with the local Crown Police and he obtained a night stick from them. He used to "flip" it expertly and taught me how. Dad passed that night stick to me and when I see it hanging on my study wall many memories of him, Mom and Bermuda come rushing back to me. We have a kerosene wick lamp or two around. We don't use them very often. They are messy. I didn't like to clean them as a boy and I still don't like to clean them. For the twenty five years I spent with the Boy Scouts of America and summer camps, we used lanterns which needed cleaning. The boys never seemed to get the hang of not blackening the glass. <grin> I remember the use of lanterns in the old freight train switching yards across from our house. The sound of the puffing of the steam locomotives and the sound of the cars crashing together was music to lull me to sleep at night. The whistle was music, not like the blast of a diesel horn today. "Every" boy had a Lionel Electric Train! Well, I can't pass by any display of "wanna-bee" engineers. I had one. I had enough track to make a figure-8. My cousin has a model train display to envy. If it was made he had it. Water towers, stations, houses, multiple transformers and what seemed miles of track. As I remember he even had different gage tracks. It filled a large part of his basement. Sigh, I guess we moved around the country and world too much to pack a model train around. <biggrin> So, model trains remind me of living near a switchyard, traveling on trains, and the good times I had with my cousin. He turned out to be the closest thing I had to a brother. There is a tin soap container on my workbench. It contained the what was left of the pictures that almost survived a house fire we had when I was about six years old. Mom treated those pictures as if they were gold. I am in the process of digitizing them and some reconstruction or restoration work. These and other things that have belonged to my families can't talk for themselves. So, I have written as much of their stories as I can and am storing them with the objects. I don't know if anyone of the family will want them, but if they do they will know their stories from my side of the picture. This last week has not been the best for many families of my acquaintance and distant kin. The storms have been violent and some of them lost so much. All my friends and relatives have checked in and are doing fine. However, there seems to be a lot of "clean-up" in some places. Guess the graveyard restoration attempt will have to wait a bit longer. I hope all your friends and family are as well as mine. Plus, Happy Mother's Day to all Mother's and to those who come from Mother's. Remember that they, our Mother's, spent much time rocking us when we were very young. 1. [ILJACKSON] Little Egypt Heritage, 4 May 2003, Vol 2 #17
    2. Bill
    3. Little Egypt Heritage Articles Stories of Southern Illinois Bill Oliver 4 May 2003 Vol 2 Issue: #17 ISBN: pending Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen of Little Egypt, As a retired educator, reading is a passion, as is learning something new. Recently, I've been reading about all the latest and greatest in digital picture printing. This led me into website authoring with lots of bells and whistles. The next step was to read about accessibility on the World Wide Web. To my woe, I like so many other webmeisters, have become so wrapped up in the appearance of the sites that we have lost sight of the purpose we genealogists and historians started with in the days before the general use of the WWW. The TV programs CSI, CSI Miami, plus the newest spin off of JAG, all talk about crime solving via the latest and greatest ... technology. Wow, what a budget the Los Vegas Crime Lab must have. :) The original purpose was to make data available to researchers. And, the purpose of these articles is heritage ... the history of our families and the heritage that they brought with them. So, I guess it would be best to get back to that purpose. Today, we are wrapped up with the increase in crime solving through modern forensics. Modern forensics with the latest and greatest. Where the single strand of fiber analyzed in the latest high tech laboratory proves to determine who-done-it. Genealogists, family historians, and anthropologists are now very interested in the forensics of what bones can teach us. Skeleton bones are jigsaw puzzles. The bones can tell us someone's age, sex, race, height, and their dominant handedness — left or right. However, we seldom, if every, actually get to read our ancestral bones. So, we have to just dream about what the bones could tell us about our ancestors. We have to still use good old Sherlock Holmes techniques of deduction to put the flesh back on our ancestors bones. One place we can use to teach us are the grave sites. The soul of the ancestor is there. As our European ancestors spread out from the east coast across the continent, traditions of burial and memorializing spread with them and adapted to the new conditions. As they traveled families left behind family members, and subsequently the left a fragment of ritual or artifact to ease the feelings of vulnerability in this enormously large and undeveloped land. The loss of a loved one magnified the feelings of the new and strange, thus to relieve this, they would fall back on the familiar and comfortable. This often meant old world monuments displayed in and across the heartland of America. Our cemeteries are full of religious imagery. The Lutheran austere markers, the very passionate Hispanic folk art. There are stern verses of scripture on limestone tablets versus the free spirited phrases depicting character, such as "World's greatest truck driver" or "I'd rather be drag racing". City metropolis cemeteries usually display the more ornate monuments adorned with surrogate mourners gazing shyward toward the heavens. Wealth usually played a definite part in just how ornate. While on the treeless prairies along the Oregon Trail, migrating families did their best with the limestone found locally, yet still reflected the rudeness of migratory burials. Materials for monuments have varied with locations and times. Limestone was the most common stone in pioneer days. Marble was used in the late 19th century. Wood and sometimes wrought iron were used when stone was too costly. Scandinavians and Germans fashioned wrought iron crosses. My Swiss-German ancestors are so marked in Nebraska. Sandstone and slate were used in areas where available. The durability of granite was difficult in early days to allowed for only low relief motifs and lettering. Concrete found its way into the list of materials because it could be shaped and decorated nearly at the will of the artist. Mosaics could be made by placing items such as telephone insulators, marbles and even seashells.. Cast iron markers mounted on decorative bases can mark where French or Bavarian folk predominate. Swedish crosses sometimes have artifacts in the form of hearts or geometric shapes decorating them. In Lincoln, Nebraska airplane propellers were used to mark graves. Though cemeteries today are often quite level, early cemeteries were on hills and otherwise land difficult to farm. Throughout the heartland, cemeteries accompany churches, thereby separating ethnic and religious groups. Further segregation was fostered by fraternal organizations such as the Odd Fellows, the Masons, the Elks, and the Rebekah Lodge. A type of monument insurance company called the International Order of Woodmen of the World furnished monuments in the form of sawed wood or tree stumps or even stacks of wood, dot heartland cemeteries. In fact simulated wood motif markers became so popular that they don't always now indicate the Woodmen group. J Sterling Morton, father of Arbor Day and his family have tall tree trunk monuments and horizontal logs in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Out in Hiawatha, Kansas is the Davis Memorial, which is quite unusual. It is a collection of life sized likenesses of the John and Sarah Davis, with several statues depicting various ages of the couple. Carved in Italy, it is estimated that it cost a half million dollars and took the decade of the 1930s to complete. It is further said that John Davis spent this sum of money for the memorial to prevent Sarah's relatives from inheriting his money. The story continues to say that Sarah's family thought she could do better than John Davis. The union was childless. Some of the figures have been damaged by vandals, but there are photographs available to show the record. Even one of the statues of John Davis had a thigh high vertical log behind his left leg. And, the final set of carvings has Mr Davis sitting in a chair and beside him is an empty stone chair with carved letters .... "The Vacant Chair". 3. Karima, Thanks for posting these marriage transcripions. Often, you are providing the missing piece of information that I have been seeking. For example, the record for: Edward GORDON -- Josie STOFFLE I knew from the Brenda Lee Garver books that Josie had married a GORDON and that she was living in St. Louis in 1906 and in Hartford, CT in 1934, but I did not know the name of her husband. With the clue of his first name, I was able to locate them in the 1910 census for St. Louis, and I discovered they had a daughter Hazel, b. abt 1898. Josie was listed as Amanda J. GORDON (her maiden name was Amanda Josephine STOFFEL), and Edward was listed as Edward B. GORDON. Amanda Josephine STOFFEL was the daughter of Peter STOFFEL, Jr. and Harriet C. BRADLEY. It is interesting to note how some of the spellings of the surnames differs from other records. For example, STOFFEL vs. STOFFEL. I suspect this was due partly to a laxity in spelling and in other cases to the difficulty in deciphering the old hand-written records. For example, the record for: Parker L. GORDON -- Emma V. HALL About half of the records I see for Parker list him as Parker I. GORDON and the other half as Parker L. GORDON. It seems the script "I" looked very much like the script "L." Another common source of confusion was the script "S" vs. the script "L" which looked so very much alike and have led to many mistranscriptions, such as Lara for Sara, etc. Parker I. or L. GORDON was the son of Rebecca YOUNG and Rev. Harry Smith GORDON (familiarly known as "Uncle Henry" in his later years, he started the Looney Springs Baptist Church). The marriage to Emma was Parker's second marriage. Emma died 11 Aug 1886 and was buried at Looney Springs cemetery. Parker's third marriage was to Rebecca Jane WEEDON. Their adopted daughter Nora married Homer BARTLETT. One final comment regarding the marriage of: Granvill GRAFF -- Lydia Jane REDFIELD This was the first marriage for Granville GRAFF, son of Jacob GRAFF and Mary Elizabeth LEVAN. Lydia Jane REDFIELD, daughter of Benjamin Roswell REDFIELD and Elizabeth Jane CHEATHAM, died 18 Jun 1886 and was buried at Looney Springs cemetery. On 29 Sep 1887 Granville GRAFF married Margaret Ann REIMAN, daughter of William A. REIMAN and Lucretia Elizabeth COOPER. 3. Karima, Coincidentally, this week I was researching the Sophia who is listed in this marriage record that you transcribed: William GIESKING [?] -- Sophia BEHUKIN [?] Sophia was b. abt. 1835 in Germany. She married (1) Christopher WAHLMAN and they had five children, Charles (1858), Sophia (1862) , Wilhelmina ("Minnie") 1865, Frederick ("Fritz") 1868, and Henry WAHLMAN (23 Feb 1870). All five children married, and three resided in Campbell Hill. Sophia then married (2) BEHNKEN and they had sons John and Ferdinand BEHNKEN. 1. [ILJACKSON] Little Egypt Heritage, 27 April 2003, Vol 2 #17
    2. Bill
    3. Little Egypt Heritage Articles Stories of Southern Illinois (c) Bill Oliver 20 April 2003 Vol 2 Issue: #16 ISBN: pending Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen of Little Egypt, The mind is a fascinating "thing". Often I cannot remember what I had for Easter Dinner less than an hour later, or the name of a person introduced a few seconds ago. Yet, at times, I will write a sentence, a paragraph even, of something I've read years ago, or replay in my mind, a tune heard hours, days, or weeks ago. While on my way driving to Church last Sunday, I heard a piece of music which blended Bach and Canadian Native traditions. Though I needed to concentrate on my driving in traffic, the piece repeated itself in my head at various times during the day, though the name of the piece, and the name of the performers are gone as if never heard. Last week's article brought back nostalgia of a Northwestern General Store that was still operating in the 1960s in Fulton County, Ohio. A place called Lytton's out beyond St Mary's, but on Road "N". It more than reminded me of a modern day "collectables establishment" ... there was just "everything" there. My two young boys loved to be let loose in there to wonder at all the things stocked. I firmly believe that if you asked for something that would be produced in Central Africa, after a reasonable search the owner would produce it. There were things manufactured by Kosh by gosh, came from Otumwa, Iowa, cheese even from Wisconsin. This building is still standing, but barely, long now closed. I don't believe it is as wide as my house, nor longer than the depth of my city lot. The ancient proprietor probably deceased, though lives yet because I fondly remember. Another fascinating place was the Old Rome Center Country Store near Adrian, Michigan. When our children were first introduced to this place it was a small one room place with old counters and display cases filled with all types of sewing tools and material, as well as, kitchen gadgits. Then, there were all the candy sticks. The room was complete with an old coal stove, a checker board with the pieces made of corn cob slices, cracker tins and pickle barrels. Tucked away on high ground overlooking the remnants of the community of Tunnel Hill, Illinois is a building which I imagine as a stage inn. Across the road, along the low ground, is a row of buildings which would be "main" street. There had to be a general store there somewhere. Though the surrounding homes there are well kept and in mostly modern renovation, the old establishment on the high ground is yearly less recognizable due to the growth of vines and ivy encasing it. I wonder about it each time I return to "home" ground of the BENSONs and HARPERs and OLIVERs. Perhaps, the next visit, I will find someone who will tell me the story of that vine covered building. Meanwhile it is a deceased entity. Speaking of the deceased ..... the talk in my circles lately has been about cemeteries. Since my interest in "fleshing out" old bones is so intense there seems to be a "magnet" effect. Letters have come in telling interesting anecdotal stories. Yet it doesn't end just there. Folks have loaned or recommended books about cemeteries and preserving them and the stones therein. Alex Haley's Pulitzer Prize winning 1976 book, which traced six generations of his ancestry, is credited with encouraging better research methods and standards, as well as, showing new concepts of research. More importantly, it gave good examples of customs. Once we discounted "grave witching" as hooey. My Nebraska cousins taught me not to laugh at that craft and my Nebraska friends taught many of us the rules to the craft a few years ago. This week my Southern Illinois friends reported and sent digitized pictures of a grave witching workshop in Massac County. It is interesting to note that in our history graveyards did not have plot maps with registered burials. Before there could be a grave dug, a grave witching had to be performed so that needless digging could be avoided. Along with those pictures were some others of stone markers with my surname on them. Finally, there were some pictures where the hairs on my arms stood out as if charged with static electricity. The room felt cooler suddenly. The first picture was not taken in a neat, well cared for cemetery. It was a cemetery, for there was a stone marker, but obviously it was in or near a swamp, plus the growth around the stone was in the wild state. There was no immediate explanaaton for the feeling. A few pictures later a rather lengthly explanation accompanied the pictures. This was a cemetery back along CRENSHAW Creek in Massac County, Illinois. Somewhere along where these pictures were taken, my 2nd Great Grandfather walked and worked, and might possibly be buried near by, if not right there. Well, it is quite natural to get goose bumps if an ancestor had a noted demise. This probably would cause a particularly unique grave marker and more paper work to trail, errrr, locate. However, so far we have not located any of that wonderful paper trail or a stone. Burial customs have a reason behind them, albeit, that may be based on a superstition. For example, pall bearers wore gloves. That makes a neat show, however, the custom is based on the superstition that the spirit of the deceased could enter the bearers body through their bare hands. Widow's Weeds [black clothes] were and are worn to make the person less visible to the deceased, thus preventing the spirit from bothering the living. Do you know why one doesn't or shouldn't cut into a funeral procession?? It is so as not to attract the wrath of the evil spirits following the procession. You thought it was just to cause an invonvenience to those who have to wait till the "train" passed. :) Clocks were/are stopped, not only to mark the time of death, but all "life" stopped for the family until after the funeral, at which time, the clocks were started again to symbolize the beginning of the family's life again. A clap of thunder after a funeral indicated that the soul of the deceased was accepted in Heaven. Though there were at least two females who advertised that they "laid out of the dead" prior to 1800, between mid-19th century and our "great 20th-century depression", family and neighbors prepared the body for burial. This preparation consisted of washing and dressing the deceased and "laying it out" for visitors to pay their respects. Our custom of sitting with and viewing the deceased is called "visitation", "calling", "waking the dead" or just the "wake". I'm sure that the last term congers up toasting to the deceased with hard liquor or beer. Well, to be sure, that does happen in many cultures. That is the social part of the funeral activities ... lots of food and "drink". That part of the practice of the wake which was the "watch" was the practice of the practical side of the activities. Besides a genuine fear of being buried alive, there were no screens on windows and doors in summer, with bugs and flies having a natural attraction to the dead, family and friends would perform around the clock vigils to protect the corpses. Even in winter, dogs, cats and rats could be "spoilers". Around the clock vigils also served to watch just in case the "body" woke up asking for something to drink. Well, an "undertaker" is one who undertakes funeral arrangements and that term was replaced by either "funeral director" or "mortician". Mortician, though in use, is not as popular. Funeral Director, on the other hand, is mostly used today. I leave you with this bit of trivia. Have you seen the plumes on the old horse drawn hearses? No plume: deceased was poor. Two plumes: moderate financial circumstances. Three or four plumes: pretty well off. Five to six plumes: deceased was well off. Seven to eight plumes: deceased was most wealthy. Oh, well, who needs plumes?
