Hi Stephen, I am researching the Allen family. But I am getting nowhere with it. My great-grandmother was Anne Ophelia Allen. Anne was born June 14, 1864 in Henry County. She married my Great-Grandfather Frank DeLos Leonard in 1892 in Cambridge, Illinois. She died May 3, 1899 and is buried in Liberty Cemetery. My Grandfather's name was Allen Ray Leonard. I have NO information on Anne Ophelia Allen's family. Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated. Allen is a name that is carried on as a middle name in my family. I know of the real estate you are talking about. My grandmother lived on S. Oakwood. I don't remember exactly the number... 608 keeps ringing a bell. I lived at 509 N. State St. and went to the Grace United Methodist Church Kathy mentioned. I wish I could help you more with your quest, but I can't. It's been fun reading the story of your family and the information from Kathy Minder. Brought back some memories of growing up in Geneseo. Good luck with your search. Oakwood Ave. in Geneseo and I can assure you the house on Oakwood is still there. Its isn't that large, a small frame home, probably two bedrooms upstairs, and one down. Nice yard, and a wonderful family with a couple of children live there. As far as the one on N. State St., addresses may have changed since there is a newer home in that block, so the address may have been moved to 329. There IS a brick home at that address and the one with the correct address is next door, its a very large frame home made into an apartment house. Behind the brick house, now owned by Jim and Michelle Glazier, is the Grace United Methodist Church. Also, I think the cottages you mentioned may have been on the Rock River, not Creek. Many people in the area have cottages at Shady Beach or Indian Mounds on the Rock River about 6-8 miles north of Geneseo. There were Allens in Geneseo when I was growing up, and I think, (I can check when I get home) a Mr. Allen owned the property where my home is. Mrs. Phyllis Allen lives on Park St., and I think my sixth grade teacher was Miss Morrow. Doris Morrow was a well respected teacher and historian at the Geneseo Library until her death. Barbara, Thank you for your reply! I am not able to locate a connection with your Anne and my Allen family. Although they did come over from Ireland within a few years of my family. My Allens came from what is now Northern Ireland in 1866 and to my knowledge I have not been able to locate any branches other than this one group. There were only three sons that were born to that line, the last John Allen who was born in 1871. He was my great great grandfather and he had only one living child Merle. Merle Allen married George Hoover and had one son John Hoover who lived on State street and was born in 1930 and died in Danville, Vermillion County in 1996. Another son Samuel Hugh was born in 1869 and was married to Jennie (I believe Pritchard) and there is no known children. The eldest of the three Andrew W Allen was b in 1864 in Ireland and married Dana Burton. Their daughters were Elvira, Beulah, and Gwendolyn. I have not been able to find any descendents for them. I did a search for the 1880 US Census for Henry County on the LDS site and was able to locate one Annie Allen age 15. The only other Ann Allen listed was an infant. The parents were listed as William and Margaret Allen both age 62 and being born in Irleland. They had a son John Allen (not my John Allen) who is listed age 20 being born in Ireland, two sons both age 12 Robert and Henry both born in Illinois, and Anne age 15 being born in Illinois. That would put them coming to America between 1860-1865. The father was a farmer, the mother kept house, the boys all worked on farm, and the daughter went to school. The source information LDS listed was the Census Place as Cornwall, Henry, Illinois - Family History Library Film 1254213- NA Film # T9-0213- and page # 239 A There is an Allen family that was in Geneseo that came from England from what I understand. Also there was a Robert Allen from what is now Northern Ireland that lived in the area with his family. I am not sure if he is connected to my line either. In 1871 my Allens were in the Rock Island Census and sometime after that but before 1880 they moved to Atkinson and then a few years later the three sons and their parents moved into Geneseo. To my knowledge there were no male ALLEN descendents to carry on the name. I will be sending more info on my Allens to the list as soon as I locate the photos of the houses I have packed away. I finally located the box they were in. My Allens also have been hard to research. Take care...Stephen Barbara Hanson <barb@abia.com> wrote:Hi Stephen, I am researching the Allen family.
