Dear Fellow Historians: I am looking for information on my great-great uncle, Horatio G. Sanford, who was a member of the 124th Illinois Infantry from Kewanee. He was born and raised in Belchertown, MA. He left Belchertown sometime before the Civil War with his cousin (whom I believe was O.H. Loomis) and settled in Kewanee where they planted fruit trees and potatoes on their land (according to his diary). Horatio died from wounds on July 17, 1864. His effects: two pocket dairies and a photograph album, were given to his agent, O.H. Loomis. The second of the dairies, came down through the family to my grandmother and then to me, but no-one knows of the whereabouts of the first diary or the photo album. I am writing to you in hopes that one of you may have information on Horatio Sanford, or O.H. Loomis -- I would like to contact his descendants. The original of this diary is in the Belchertown Historical Society. I sent a copy of it to the Kewanee Historical Society in 1992, but never received any acknowledgement from that organization that they received it. Horatio's name appears on the Civil War monument on the town green in Belchertown. Is there a Civil War monument in Kewanee with his name on it? Thank in advance for your help with this request. Susan, I have an 1885 Bio. of certain Henry Co. citizens and O.H. Loomis is one of those written about. Also the 1901 version has him. The 1885 version is similar to the 1901 article in coverage and content. So I can copy that article from the 1901 book and send to you if you send me your mail address. All 8 of his children are mentioned and possibly you can follow up on them to find the owner/holder of the diary and photos belonging to Horatio Sandford. Horatio is not mentioned and there were no Sandfords written up in either Bio book.
