    1. RE: [ILHENRY-L] Henry county realestate/social circles late 19th early 20th century
    2. Barbara Hanson
    3. Hi Stephen, I am researching the Allen family. But I am getting nowhere with it. My great-grandmother was Anne Ophelia Allen. Anne was born June 14, 1864 in Henry County. She married my Great-Grandfather Frank DeLos Leonard in 1892 in Cambridge, Illinois. She died May 3, 1899 and is buried in Liberty Cemetery. My Grandfather's name was Allen Ray Leonard. I have NO information on Anne Ophelia Allen's family. Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated. Allen is a name that is carried on as a middle name in my family. I know of the real estate you are talking about. My grandmother lived on S. Oakwood. I don't remember exactly the number... 608 keeps ringing a bell. I lived at 509 N. State St. and went to the Grace United Methodist Church Kathy mentioned. I wish I could help you more with your quest, but I can't. It's been fun reading the story of your family and the information from Kathy Minder. Brought back some memories of growing up in Geneseo. Good luck with your search. Oakwood Ave. in Geneseo and I can assure you the house on Oakwood is still there. Its isn't that large, a small frame home, probably two bedrooms upstairs, and one down. Nice yard, and a wonderful family with a couple of children live there. As far as the one on N. State St., addresses may have changed since there is a newer home in that block, so the address may have been moved to 329. There IS a brick home at that address and the one with the correct address is next door, its a very large frame home made into an apartment house. Behind the brick house, now owned by Jim and Michelle Glazier, is the Grace United Methodist Church. Also, I think the cottages you mentioned may have been on the Rock River, not Creek. Many people in the area have cottages at Shady Beach or Indian Mounds on the Rock River about 6-8 miles north of Geneseo. There were Allens in Geneseo when I was growing up, and I think, (I can check when I get home) a Mr. Allen owned the property where my home is. Mrs. Phyllis Allen lives on Park St., and I think my sixth grade teacher was Miss Morrow. Doris Morrow was a well respected teacher and historian at the Geneseo Library until her death. Let me know if any of this is what you're looking for and if I can be of assistance further. Kathy Minder 622 S. Oakwood Ave. Geneseo, IL 61254 researching : alphabetically: Breen, Curran, Edwards, Egert, Johnson, Minder, Walter(s), Yackley > I have a question regarding real estate that I am hoping someone may be able to help. My Allen family line lived in Atkinson and Geneseo from 1866 until mid 1930's and may still have unknown cousins there. > Family lore is that they owned very expensive homes, along with cottages on Rock Creek. In 1930 my great great grandfather John Allen had a 4 bedroom brick house listed worth $10,000 at 325 N. State Street and his brother Andrew Allen and wife Dana Burton lived at 602 Oakwood with a house value of $4500. I have side photos of the one on State Street and their is a building that looks like a big church or hall next to it. Are these buildings still standing? I tried to do a check online and came up with nothing. > Would those prices be normal or above average? I have been arguing that they were nice but not mansions. Other family members insist that they were extremely large. Per my mother, the Allen family had quite a bit of money until the depression and John Allen loaned it out and never got repayed as no one had the money during the depression. My mother claims she saw one suitcase filled to the top with checks he had written and that the family had gotten this wealth from the invention of certain farm equipment. My Great Great Grandmother and Great Grandmother both claimed to have gone to Augustana College in the 1880's and 1920's and my great grandmother had one of the first cars in the area. She also toured with Miller's All Girl Band. > One of my reasons I wonder is that I do not see the Allen family mentioned in any of the county guides and I am not finding anyone else researching them. From what documented sources I dont see them as being outstanding. Did Geneseo have a large social scene during the late 1800's early 1900's? > Any info appreciated. During the depression my great grandmother became quite embarrased of her family accumulations and I do know per her that they hid alot of items and photos as they didnt want to appear snobby and hurt other peoples feeling (we found her secret stache when she died) and if I even thought about being overly proud about anything I would get THE lecture. > Best wishes to all...Stephen > Researching in Henry County: > direct lines: MORROW, ALLEN, HAMILTON, STEELE, LUTHER, HOOVER > via marriage: BURTON, PRITCHARD, HARBROUGH > > > > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo! 2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Nettie SADLER and an unidentified woman taken at the Miller Studio in Kewanee, Illinois. I would guess that the photograph was taken in the early 1900's and that both women were in their teens or 20's at the time it was taken. This photograph was recovered along with other photographs from Macomb, Bushnell, and Litchfield, Illinois with surnames, CHIDESTER, MAXWELL, WALDORF, LAFFERTY, JACKSON, ELLIOTT, and KEENER. I'm hoping to find someone from this SADLER family so that this beautiful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Hi Cindy and Dick and all~~ I am researching the McCullough, Smith, Duncan, Day and Humfreville families, who all lived in or around Kewanee in the 1870's-1900's. I would really like to find Harry and Anna Smith's graves. Anna's maiden name was Duncan. They married in Kewanee in 1869. He was originally from England. My great grandparents were John McCullough and Lillie Day Smith. They married in Kewanee in 1885. I know John and Lillie and thier son Harry are buried in the Pleasantview Cemetery. Am hoping to obtain pictures of their graves one day. John mcCullough was an architect, and designed many of the old buildings in Kewanee and surrounding areas. Some are the old Kewanee High School, The Red Men Tribe building-now a furniture store, the 1st Presbyterian Church on 3rd and Tremont. I am still discovering other places!! I am out here in Soggy WA State and appreciate any help with look ups etc.... Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!! 3. Jan When I transcribe for GENWEB they say anything over 75 years is fair game. I did a 1918 School Index and had no problem. You can check with the people at genweb and find out. They are listed on the R on the rootsweb.com page. If you submit things to them they put them on the county home page. Sally

    3. Thanks David....I do have this info, but I thank you for writing just in case I didn't. I understand in the 1910 History of Henry Co., that there is a picture of him. Does anyone have access to this book that they might be able to make me a copy? I'll pay for copy & postage costs. I also have a question about copywrite laws. How old does a book have to be before it's ok to transcribe? I have seen different postings about transcribing books that are no longer under the copywrite laws, but I have never seen anything about how long they are good for. I have several old books that I would be willing to start working on, but I don't know the rules. Jan Rutledge Roggy DBlish5118@aol.com wrote: > Perhaps you already have this. I got interrupted with other things last month. If the following info is of interest, I have the bio of JOHN M. TAZE in WORD format, and can send that. I have NOT entered this into the family tree database as of yet. I am NOT part of the volunteers at Henry County. This is something that I am doing on my own. When completed, I will be able to produve family tree diagrams, family Group sheets, and web pages from the family tree database. A searchable database will be created from the family tree database. DaveB JOHN M. TAZE, born September 13, 1832, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, his parents being Isaac and Margaret J. (Irvin) Taze. Mr. Taze was united in marriage September 24, 1874 to Miss Elizabeth S. Rutledge, a daughter of William and Ann (McCurdy) Rutledge, who came from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in March 1873, and settled in Oxford Township. They had lived in the same neighborhood as the Taze family and the two young people were well acquainted before they left the east. Mr. Rutledge was a farmer by occupation, although as a young man he had been a boatman on the canal from Pittsburg to Youngstown. He is still living at the age of eighty-seven years, but his wife died May 18, 1898. To Mr. Taze and his wife were born three children, William I., Anna Margaret and Jane Ella, the daughters being at home. Source: "History of Henry County Illinois" by Henry L. 3. John, Try finding John Smith! I do have a middle initial - C - but that has certainly been of little help. If his daughter (my grandmother) hadn't been born in Kewanee, I could never prove that he had even visited there (and maybe that's what it was - just a stopover on their way to Minnesota). Aren't these Smiths almost impossible to find anything on? Best Luck in your search, John S. 1. [ILHENRY-L] F. E. Davis bio from 1910 History of Henry County
    2. jill & jim
    3. Looking for a bio on Francis Eugene Davis that is referenced in the 1910 History of Henry County. If anyone has the book and can scan a copy for me, I would really appreciate it. New to the List and researching the Thomas R. and Harriet Davis' family originally from New York, moved to Henry County about 1860. Quite a few family members (20 so far) buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Would really like to connect with Thomas Jefferson Davis (Thomas R. son) and Emmeline Shrom children: Charles L., Mary B., Fred S., and Hallie Mildred. Their parents died (1886 & 1881 respectively) when they were children, their Uncle Aaron took them in and from there...........? Thank you! Jill
