I thought I had the bio Jan was referring to, but if your information came from it, then I don't have it. The one I have concerns Joel Wells, Sr. who came from Vermont to Illinois, first to Gallatin County and then Rock Island County, by way of Galena. Maybe I don't have the one referred to....... Flavia

There is a bio for Joel in the 1885 P & B of Henry Co. Do you have that? Jan Flavia Hodges wrote: > Does anyone know if there was a newspaper known as PRESS DEMOCRAT in Henry > County around 1850-60? There was a Union Democrat from 7/4/1863-11/24/1864. It was a weekly Democratic paper. I believe it was a Kewanee newspaper as it was publised by C. Bassett, who also publised the Kewanee Advertiser. There is no mention of the Press Democrat in the 1885 Portrait & Biographical Album of Henry Co. This is the closest I could find. Thanks, Jan. Yes, I have that bio - it is the father of the Joel I am looking for. Joel, Jr., at one time, owned something called the Colony House. There is/was a tombstone on the property - current owners still have the tombstone stored on the property. As I gather, this Colony House was designed, and possibly built, by R. R. Stewart for some settlers coming to the area from Geneseo Co., New York. It is quite a fascinating story. Flavia
Hello, I do not believe in posting links to pay sites but I found a reference site a large amount of list members may use that I think is too valuable to pass up letting the group know about, as they are crucial to Henry County History and it is a reputable company. Does anyone know if there was a newspaper known as PRESS DEMOCRAT in Henry County around 1850-60? I've been told there was an obituary for a Joel Wells who died 16 August 1857 in this paper. My information is that Joel died in 1856 and I would like to find this obit for verification. Thanks for any information. Flavia Hodges, San Pablo, CA
Hi, If Mabel Atwood isn't in Oakwood Cemetery then does someone have the Rosedale Cemetery book. If so could you do a look up there please? There are a couple of smaller cemeteries around Cambridge. Are they transcribed? Maybe she is there. I'm also looking for a Carl Emil( or Emil Carl) Johnson b 1860 and not sure when he died(after 1900) but he may be in Rosedale also. Thanks to all for the help on the Oakwood question. Steve
Jan, Yes a large amount of the families came to Henry County from Westmoreland County PA and Livingston County NY The MORROWS/HAMILTONS, STEELES/STEELS, HANNAs (of Hannastown) all began intermarrying in Westmoreland and came together. From what I understand the HAMILTONs and STEELs actually started marrying together and came over from Ireland to PA. The LUTHERs/OTTs also married over the years and migrated together. Strange events my current roommate is an OTT from the Westmoreland area. To think the LUTHER House and the OTT Cabin are in the Deerfield, Il museum side by side from the 1850s and 150 years later their direct descendents out of the blue end up living in the same house in Orlando, FL. That was a stroke of luck for my research..... I have not studied Hannastown yet but I know that the founders are cousins in my collateral lines. best wishes Stephen Jan Roggy <jlroggy@essex1.com> wrote:I wish I could tell you what the turnaround time was, but I have never used this service. I found your notes interesting at the bottom. My family came from Westmoreland Co., PA to Henry Co., also. I have the 1885 Portrait & Biographical Album of Henry Co. and I am amazed at the # of people that came from Westmoreland Co to Henry Co. Has anyone on this list studied the "migration trails" that brought people to Henry Co? Was this a major route westward thru this area, or are there relationships between a lot of them that we haven't uncovered yet? Diana, I am working on the same family of LUTHERs. George Barthel LUTHER is my GGGG grandfather. I do not have George Peter's death date either. I have been able to get information on 9 generation of Luthers in America. I have much information on those deceased and living. I also am in contact with my 6th cousins in California who are researching the Luthers. Also have been in contact with the LUTHER House museum in Deerfield, Il. >From all my research I show your ancestor as being referred to as Peter and mine as George. I do know the LUTHERS all had "Saint" First names and went by their middle names. The cousin in CA said that their was some sort of family scandal that divided the lines. I have not got the information on that yet. I do have photos of my line starting with George Barthels daughter, Caroline in 1857 and one that may be George himself (We are not sure if it is him or Caroline's brother) we had them of two of her sisters but they were the glass type and exploded one day. I do have one major fact difference than what I can see on some other websites. I do not show the family coming to the US on the Schooner Harmony on Dec 31, 1820? I have looked endlessly for that ship and no luck I did come across this information: Also in this information it shows Johann Jacob's wife as Louisa Landering not Louisa Sanders. The Luther's were traveling with the Landerings/Paeters and I wonder if the ships captain confused Saunders with Launderings or if there was a change somewhere. My Irish ancestors (Liggett/McCarty) followed a similar route: arriving in Philadelphia, moving to Ohio, and then Henry County, Illinois. I have thought they may have following the development of the transportation system as it opened up new land for homesteading. They left Middletown Ohio about the time that the railroad was extended into Illinois in 1854. Friends from Ohio tell my ancestors probably got to Ohio via the Great Lakes and the new Miami canal that connected Cleveland and Cincinnati. I have information about the development of transportation routes and the growth of America on my Liggett family website: http://ajp3.home.mindspring.com/liggett/ in the chapters on Ohio and Illinois. Stephen, who are your LUTHERs? I am working on Johann Jacob LUTTER/Louisa Catherine Wilhemina SANDERS' son George Peter who married Mary Elizabeth MILLER. I still haven't found a death date (altho I think it was around 1887) for George Peter. They had children--Sarah, Anna Eliza, Abraham, Catherine Magdalena, Sufrona, Christina, Martin, Franklin, George 'Peter', Atilia Christena, Julia 'Olive', and Charles Ellsworth from 1841-1868. I wish I could tell you what the turnaround time was, but I have never used this service. Since I'm in the next county, I just go there. I can't speak for Henry Co., but neighboring Bureau Co., let me get birth & death certs for my husband's family, but I was there in person. Larry's dad died in 96, and I was able to get the birth & death cert. in 2001. When my 44 year old brother died in 99, I had to go get his birth cert. to apply for his military tombstone. I didn't know if they would give it to me or not, but I took his obit out of the paper, along with my birth cert & my driver's lic. & they gave it to me with no problem. In fact, while I was there I got a copy of my other brother's birth cert. since my parents had never gotten an original one when they were born. All mom had was the hospital copy. They even let me get that, so they must be pretty lenient. This site evidently just went into effect recently as it was the hot topic on our local tv stations last night! Maybe you can get a request in before the word gets out and you're on a waiting list. There is a number there plus an email addy, so maybe you can ask them the time frame. I noticed that the surnames that you listed are names that are still in my area. Did you know that there was a Hanna township in Henry Co? Good luck on your research, and I hope this site helps you out. Jan Baldwin wrote: > Jan > Thank you for this information. I would like to find birth records for William John Mathews, my great-great-grandfather. He was born at Bishop Hill Colony, Henry County, Illinois, 15 Jul 1855. Also, would like to find birth records for William's sister, Helena (Helen) Mathews, born 13 Mar 1858 (or 1857 ?). Both William and Helena may have a different last name for birth records ? Father is presently unknown. Mother's maiden name from Sweden is Mattsdotter, later changed to Matsen (other spellings include Matson, Mattson, Mattsen). -- : - ) - Vern Andrews - - - Oregon Trail Descendant * * Please send all attachments to * * < mailto:vjandrews@softcom.net > < mailto:vjafamhist@pacbell.net > For Sending Personal Messages * * * Stop by and visit the Andrews Website * * * * * < http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/VernAndrews/ > * *

Laurie, I checked every Anderson Bio and no luck finding Signa T. Anderson. I imagine she and her parents and later her husband did not subscribe to this Bio which cost a considerable amount in 1900s money! I was just watching the local news and they were telling that Henry Co., now has a new website for the county offices in Cambridge. Dick - The only ANDERSON name I have is Signa T. ANDERSON, who married Charles COTTON. The 1920 census shows her as being 30 years old, and their oldest daughter is 15. From that I would assume that in 1901, Signa was about 11 and still living with her parents. According to the census, she emigrated from Sweden in 1886 (4 years before she was born, if she was really 30 in 1920) and had naturalized in 1891. Not sure which parts of the above are credible, or if any of this will help link her to the 1901 Bio, which I assume would reference her father (or parents) - and ANDERSON is not an uncommon name.... If you have anything on her, I'd love to have it... N. D. Davis was my 2nd great grand uncle. His first name is Noah. I would love to have a copy of a photo he took, just for verification for who he worked for. Any way you could scan it and send it to me? I always thought there would be some he took of his own family but have yet to locate any. Here is what I know about this family to pinpoint time frame for you: The family came from Jerusalem, Yates County, New York sometime after 1860 (I have them in the NY census for 1860), to Geneseo, Illinois. They are not in the 1865 census for New York.) I can not locate him in 1870 census-not in New York, Illinois or Iowa. His father died in Edford, Illinois in December 1870. Two of his brothers are living in Henry County in 1870, one brother is living in Wayne Co., Iowa. Noah is listed in the 1877 Voters & Taxpayers of Henry County, Illinois as a photographer. Noah is listed in the 1880 census living in Geneseo, Illinois. I also can not locate him in the 1900 census, but have probate records from Illinois for his brother that mentions Noah in them, this was in 1886. Noah died in 1908 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo, Illinois. Hope this helps "date" your family photos. Jill Barrailler (Davis) bigjim@guam..net
