    1. Re: [ILHENRY-L] Red Oak Timbers
    2. Rhona, I looked for it while in the Bishop Hill in Henry Co. last Summer. The early colonists there had an awful 1st year winter - cold and no warm shelter. Some of the settlers apparently moved out to the area called Red Oak and stayed there for a while. I drove around the "woods" and could see no settlement, just farms! Dick Matteson College Park, MD I would say the spot is about a mile Northwest of Bishop Hill. [I'll bet Bob Nelson know just where!] On Wed, 19 Feb 2003 17:34:39 EST Boogie720@aol.com writes: > To whom it may concern: > Can someone on the list please tell me where Red Oak Timbers is? 1. Re: [ILHENRY-L] Marriage Book Lookup
    2. O.K., before all the lookup requests start coming in, everyone needs to go to the Henry County website, click on "Lookup Volunteers" and see what is listed there! I volunteered for the one and only marriage index book that I own, and it covers Jan. 1902 - May 1915. There are a number of other volumes available with no lookup volunteers. But, all those books may be purchased from the Henry County Genealogical Society. I have, over the years, purchased many, many of their publications, especially the cemetery records, and I think we all need to continue to support them by purchasing these books. Even if you only have one or two names in them right now, I can almost guarantee that sometime in the future you will need to look for another name! I am willing to continue to do lookups under the guidelines established by our webmaster - she has done a great job of listing these on the Lookup Volunteers page. Mimi Stang

    1. [ILHENRY-L] thanking volunteers..contact information
    2. Baldwin
    3. Thanks to Mimi for her work....and for including the links to the two sites in her messages. I want to point out that this Rootsweb mailing list, the US GenWeb Project for Henry County, and the Henry County Genealogical Society are three separate entities and are not officially connected to each other except common interest...While I am sure some of us know that, the newbies and less frequent listers may not.... I for one appreciate volunteers...and I am more than happy to do what I can...I also think the HCGS has great publications... I have not purchased anything yet (I am unemployed and without insurance at the moment) but they do have outstanding publications which are very detailed.. The rates are what other societies use as well so I am sure they are not out for the $$.. I agree with Mimi, one surname always leads to another... After a few years of researching one name in Henry county I am convinced I am related to half the population.. LOL best wishes Stephen MStang5165@aol.com wrote:O.K., before all the lookup requests start coming in, everyone needs to go to the Henry County website, click on "Lookup Volunteers" and see what is listed there! 3. And boy is it a handy item too, even though they did not transcribe ALL the lines of info available (so once you find your group, get the page number info and go look at the film) Based on information found in an obituary related to Isaiah Whitehouse, I had information that he had moved to Iowa then a couple of other states out west, but had never been able to find him in any of the states mentioned in this obituary in 1880. Well, thanks to the "exact spelling" being turned off on my 1880 search I found him, name horribly misspelled but with the right group of wife/children (including one we never knew about!) in a state NOT mentioned in the obituary--Missouri! On the Henry co site when I updated it I included a link to the 1880 census free search http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilhenry/index.html click CENSUS. If anyone knows of any online census records free to access which would cover Henry Co that I do NOT have listed on that page, please let me know. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carroll & Sally To: ILHENRY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 3:37 AM Subject: [ILHENRY-L] Free 1880 Census Valorie and Others on the list the 1880 US Census is Free online at http://www.familysearch.org/ fill in as many or as few blanks as you want. when you click on a name in the upper R corner is a selection to get the whole family at once. 3. Rhona, I have a photocopy of the entry from the Register of Marriages book (actually from the microfilm) for Roland Joseph Mahaffey & Cora Ellen Talbot (she was my grandfather's first cousin). The date listed there, however, is Oct 28, 1903. Their licence number was #7874. I would be happy to share other information about the Mahaffeys or Talbots and would love any information you might have that I don't. I have no information on William Glass.
