I will see if I can get a hold of Dan and see if he can help me out. I am related to several of the colonists that settled there. I also have a book that list the ships that they as well as many other immigrants came over on. Hi, Angie, The Red Oak stone is in a pasture off one of the back roads near Bishop Hill. I haven't been there, but I talked with a lady last week whose husband knows where it is. I'm going to ask him to show me the location this spring. There are no names on the stone, but the Vasa archives in Bishop Hill might have some of the names of the people who are buried there. Bonnie
The Red Oak cemetery that I am looking for is East of Rt. 82 and North of the Edwards River. If anyone wants a copy of the map that I have to see if they can figure out the location, I'll be happy to send it to you. I can't send it to this group as it doesn't allow attachments, but I can email it privately. Contact me at hernan@bwsys.net. Angie Hernandez
Angie Hernandez, I have copied all of the bios from the Henry County web site, to a WORD document, searched it, and came up with 'Red Oak, Iowa'. I don't know if that answers your question. I an working on creating a family tree database from the bios, and will create a 'searchable database' from that, Iam at page 164 of 181. Its been a challange. If you have any more info on Red Oak cemetery, ;et me know. Thanks, DaveB
Hmmm wait a minute, I just re-read your directions, and I think I know what cemetery you are speaking of. The Red Oak cemetery that I am speaking of, has no tombstones, but it does have a big tone marker to show the location of the cemetery. This was supposedly the original burial sites for the original colonists of Bishop Hill Angie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie Wiley" <bjwiley@geneseo.net> To: <ILHENRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 10, 2003 8:54 AM Subject: [ILHENRY-L] Re: Red Oak Cemetery > Angie, > Drive south on Rt. 82 from Cambridge, just past the Page St. extention > (Bishop Hill road). Oh thank you! There is no one in particular that I am looking for. In fact I am not sure that they are even buried there, but it is a good possibility. I had many, many relatives that came to Bishop Hill. Angie, Drive south on Rt. 82 from Cambridge, just past the Page St. extention (Bishop Hill road). The Piatt cemetery is on the corner of the road to Red Oak. Turn right onto the road and follow it around a no. of curves (about a mile?). The cemetery is up a short lane on the left side and can be seen from the road. I have a no. of photos of some of the tombstones. Is there anyone that you are looking for? I might have an image of it. Bonnie
No, the Red Oak cemetery that I am looking for is somewhere between Bishop Hill and Cambridge. Can anyone here tell me exactly where the Red Oak cemetery is located? I have an old map that shows it on it, but I have driven around in the area that it shows and I have been unable to find it. Is it visible from the road? Any help would be appreciated. Angie Hernandez
I would like to contact anyone researching the Powell family of Henry County Stark County, Illinois who moved to Ellsworth Co KS, Cleveland Co OK and Dawson Co NE. I have been collecting data on these families for over 30 years. I am still missing pieces, but am willing to share what I have with other family members. I do have photos of many of these people.. The mother of these children was Lucretia. She married Powell sometime in the 1840's and after the Civil War married James K Oziah . I have theories on her Powell husband, but no real proof. The children were Charles Henry Powell married in 1872 in Henry Co IL Nelle E Larkin. He did not appear with his mother after the 1850 census, but resided with Cicero (Charles) and Susan Ferguson in Henry Co in 1860. These people moved to Cozad, Dawson Co, NE. Charles Henry had two sons, William and Lewis Melvin. Mary Elizabeth Powell who married Henry B. Dorrance in Stark Co IL in 1858. After she was widowed she moved to Cleveland Co OK with her two children, Effie Dorrance Ingle and Lemuel Dorrance.. James C Powell who married Rose Holmes in 1866 in Stark Co. They, along with his wife and three children, his mother, Lucretia, and her husband and son from the second marriage moved to Ellsworth Co in the 1870's. James children were Ruben, John, and Sarah "Sadie" Crow. Lewis Powell born 1853 also moved to Ellsworth Co KS. He had a wife Mary and three daughters, Rose, Letta and Adda Powell. Lewis died in the early 1880's and I have not been able to find anything about this family after 1885. Lucretia's son from the second marriage was Minott Weldon Oziah. I have a copy of the Geneseo book from the 1st 150 years. Right now, though, I am moving from one house to another, and it is packed away in a box somewhere. Wait a few weeks before hitting me with lookup requests (please). It is not indexed :o( so it would be very easy to miss a surname. I have considered scanning it into a text recognizer - that way lookups would be a snap. Perhaps - once I get it scanned, I can email copies of the text, then everybody can look up at their own leisure.
Is this a book that is out of print, or can you get it somewhere else? What was the charge originally? Valorie
I have that book, and there is no index. It is mostly a history of Geneseo's first 150 years. It was produced by the Historical Society for the Centennial. Lots of photographs, some old, some newer from the 1980's. People are mentioned but mostly a repeat of older books. All churches, schools, some businesses, Kathy Minder -----Original Message----- From: Ddhamm@aol.com [mailto:Ddhamm@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 1:26 AM To: ILHENRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILHENRY-L] Geneseo Genealogy book In a message dated 3/6/03 1:30:34 AM Eastern Standard Time, loloyd@hotmail.com writes: > There is a book on Ebay right now that has some genealogy in it concerning > Geneseo in case anyone is interested. Excuse me if this the wrong way to post. I am looking for someone who is either a member of the Henry County site, or someone who is on the mailing list, who would test my database. I have been working on converting the bios on the web, to a WORD document, and extracting the names amd places and events for a family tree database. The task is nearly done, most family tree database has been entered. That data could be used to create multiple web pages, which would be linked together, and assembled in multiple files and folders (subvols). I have created something like this before, which works fine on my Macintosh. I am assuming that it will run on an IBM PC. The collection of files needs to be in the same folder or subvol, and is accessable via Explorer or Netscape. No fancy wallpaper, just plain old text and data on submmitted folks. I am also assuming that it could be sent as a download, and that it should be saved on a diskette or on your hard drive. I have not created this yet, but could be created in a few minutes, if someone wants to try it out. Thank you, David Blish DBlish5118@aol.com
Hi, James, Although the county was established by law in 1825, there wasn't a courthouse until the early 1840's. Most of the records weren't required to be kept before 1911. There are land records that date (I think) to the 1840's, there are 1850 census records and mortality schedules, and some cemetery records. Birth and marriage records were recorded hit or miss, beginning in the 1870's.
Searching for info on my gr-grandparents name BEATTY. They migrated from PENN to IOWA 1836 - 1839. Had a son born in Illinois 1838. Would there be any record of any migration "trail? in those times through your county? Any resources you can suggest? Any direction is much appreciated.
