John don't rule this one out even though it is different. On p 236 Atkinson July 18 1789 1709 Woodbury Chauncey 28 M Farmer Scotland Chauncey Elizabeth 24 F Wife Scotland. I have a James Fell and a Robert Fell who were both naturalized on 10/10/1860. It states that Robert is 13 years old and born in 1839. This doesn't add up, but that's what it states. Good luck in your search. I have a Greenbery Chaney and Elizabeth Fell married in Henry Co. in 1857, and there are probably other children, but have information that 3 of their children were born in Illinois, before they moved to Missouri. I have an 1860 Henry County Census index published by the genealogical society. There is no Chaney listed. Flavia Hodges, San Pablo, CA
The First Day Of Census It was the first day of census, and all through the land, each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few, the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age, the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen -- the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. --- Author unknown.
I have located some photos (8) taken by my 2nd Great Grand Uncle, Noah D. Davis, on a website for the Penn State University, Historical Collections and Labor Archives, William C. Darrah Collection of Cartes-de-visite 1860-1900. Only one photo had a persons name on it (Wright Kidder) but all were taken at the studio in Geneseo, Illinois. This collection of photographs is huge (not just Illinois!) and all the pictures can be ordered for a reasonable fee. The link will take you to a page to search by photographer or geographical area. Hello All, I finally received my free death certificate requests from the Illinois State Archives that I placed on June 22, 2002. I was glad they came. Elvira R b. 23 Mar 1891 Beulah M (Mildred?) b. 27 Jan 1897 (believed to have been never married and died on 01 Jan 1929. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery) Newborn Infant died soon thereafter 1900 Gwendolin A b. 14 Aug 1902 (per the Social Security Death Index she died 02 Jan 1997 last residence in Geneseo.) Does anyone know what happened to the following people with these email addresses. They are listed as 'volunteers and submmitters' for Henry County. I sent all of them an email as a list, and AOL responded that the ;ist og email addresses did NOT exist. I'm just trying to keep track of what work was in progress, and where it is. I'm probably sending the message the wrong way, but perhaps it will generate some response. My Margta married Uelrich Appelgren. Margta and Uelrich did not have a child but he had a daughter (Cora) by a previous marriage who married a Linbeck. The daughter of Anna (Cora) made her home with her grandfather Uelrich as her mother died when Cora was a young girl. supposedly she is buried with her grandfather Uelrich in Bishop Hill cemetery. My connection with the Alfta Parish is as I understand it Grangsbo, Alfta. Yes their is so much duplication of names it gets very confusing. My great grandmother Anna Ersson married Per Olsson but when she came over to the USA as a widow with her children they took the surname of Peterson (eg son of per as her husband was "Per" Rosalie Peterson Bhatnagar
Hi all, I just finally found my gggrandparents, a friend looked up the obit for my ggrandfather Henry Jacob Sheesley in the Orion Library for me. I live in Kansas City. We were so confused, but found out that 2 brothers married 2 sisters, so the name confusion! Also found out that there are 11 graves at Western Cem (in addition to the 8 that I do know) that are Sheesley that I didn't even know about and I was there every year! Why don't we ask our parents when we can?? Now I can only guess and keep looking. Does anyone have any info on Sheesley's in Cambridge, Orion, Sherrard etc? They were very well off, but lost everything in the depression. Sheesley/Clark/Keel/Engle/Pierce/Williamson/Holm/Holmes/Fite/Erickson/Sloan/La rsdotter/ Linda Sheesley Hope
