    2. I receive the following yesterday, and felt, with the upcoming holiday approaching, this message needed to be shared with those who would understand it's meaning the most. Mikki Judge The 4th of July REMEMBERING INDEPENDENCE DAY Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few week later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't fight just the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fougnt our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Author Unknown. Remember: freedom is never free!     3. I am seeking information on Georgette Helen Beagle who married Hiram Jones. They had a daughter, Marcia Franke, born 26 Feb 1869 in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois. Georgette was born 1 May 1853 in Oswego, Oswego County, New York. I don't know any birth or death dates about Hiram Jones. I have not located them on the 1870 Federal Census of Illinois. Georgette later remarried to John Carey of LaSalle County and had a daughter Josie Vena Eliza Beagle. Both Marcia Franke and Josie used the Beagle surname. Unknown b: Abt. 1900 in IL .... 2 Daughter Lyons b: 07 Jul 1880 in Henry Co IL Quite a story from what I've been able to piece together...Lawrence William Lyons was married but I don't know to whom. Apparently this wife was deceased (possibly died in childbirth) when he went off to World War I and was killed. Frederick and Rosannah adopted their granddaughter Carmen. Then something went weird and Rosannah had Frederick E. Lyons declared legally insane and he was placed in a mental institution in "Watertown IL"--later records say Moline. Then Rosannah must have fallen ill herself, for she sent Carmen to live with her brother James Henry Martin, an RLDS priest in Lamoni IA. Rosannah then sold off all the family properties in Kewanee, put most of the money in trust for Carman and went to Lamoni herself, where she soon died and is buried. I attempted to obtain the records of the insanity trial for Frederick Lyons but was told they are still sealed and it would take a court order to have them opened. I have been unable to determine what happened to Rosannah and Frederick's other son Harry or whatever became of Carmen Lyons.

There IS a city called Henry in IL--it is in Marshall Co. Now if you want a research nightmare, take my great grandfather Richard Wooodward as a prime example. Richard Woodward was born in Henry, IL and died in Henry Co IL. In early research I did on Richard, I could have saved a lot of time if my source material had been more clear on this. The funeral record I found said only Henry IL as the birthplace of Richard's daughter, my grandmother. As it turned out she was born in Kewanee, Henry, IL., not in Henry, Marshall, IL, but because Richard was born in Henry, IL I did a bit of goose chasing to figure this all out. So, a tip, suggestion or whatever you want to call it....standard form for genealogists for a long time is getting sloppy with the advent of computer genealogy programs...when you enter your locations, to make things clear, I recommend the following When you know the town, county and state: Kewanee, Henry, IL When you do not know the town but know the county and state: Henry County, IL or Henry Co., IL If you know the town and state but not the county, I recommend you get an atlas or use the USGS Locator located at http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html and find the county for your town and enter it as you enter your data. You may know what county someplace is in but later generations may not have a clue..the town may not exist when future generations are looking at your data. There is also a McHenry County IL --we get folks here periodically who really need McHenry County--we also have a few folks who have families that migrated from McHenry County to Henry County...     3. I've just had a rash of people unsubscribing from the list and more that I had to unsub from the list. Thus there are a few things I want to bring up real quick as our list has now grown to well over 150 subscribers. 1) When you reply to the list, especially from DIGEST mode, please make the subject line appropriate to your message. Messages with RE: ILHenry Digest # blah blah blah or " I need Help" don't help those who want to quickly scan the digest for a response to a question. I get about 150-200 emails a day for example--I may overlook an important message if it has a bad subject line. Draw more attention to your message by using the surname or area in your subject line or RE: whatever the subject was you are addressing. 2) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE folks, if you are changing servers or email addresses, UNSUBSCRIBE from the list before you do this and resubscribe with your new address. Every time a bad email address "bounces" a notice comes to my mailbox about it. Yesterday alone I had close to 50 of them and had to spend almost 2 hours tracking down the subscribers, removing them from the list, putting them back ON the list, etc. This is time I could be using on working on our website. 3) If you will be going on vacation and your mailbox has a limit on how many messages it will hold, please unsub until you come back. Half the bounces yesterday were caused by "Mailbox Full" 4) When responding to the list, especially if you are subbed in Digest form, PLEASE do not quote the entire list back in your response. Please delete the extra posts you are not responding to and try to only quote back the message or info you are responding to. This makes the mail load a lot easier for everyone to handle and makes the folks at Rootsweb happy. (less load on their system and since they give us this list free, we should be nice) It also helps us to not have those pesky "Mailbox Full" bounces. And now, one more thing--I will NOT be here to monitor the list from July 7 to July 17 as I will be going to IL and IA for my MARTIN-WOODWARD reunion (two of my Henry Co lines) and will also be making a brief research jaunt over to Henry Co while there. I know you all will play nice while I am gone--I am SO proud of my listmembers--we've never had a flame war or unkind words on this list and everyone here is just THE BEST I will address the issue of the scanning of the 1877 Taxpayers book upon my return. I have only just found out that I am going north and my time between now and then is going to be spent catching up MY GENEALOGY so that I can present it at our reunion. I hope you all understand.
