    3. I realized that I did not say that my relatives lived (and died) in Loraine Township. I am interested in what newspaper(s) would have obits for 1875 into 1900s for that area. Thanks again, Judy Papendick

    3. Can someone tell me what newspaper archives I would need to access for obituaries from Henry county about 1875-1890? I am looking for obituaries for Louis Papendick (1879) and his wife Sophia Greenwood Papendick (1889). Thanks, Judy Papendick

    2. Sorry to confuse you with my incomplete reference to the Handy Book for Genealogists this time when I answered the birth certificate question. Since I just "preached" about it yesterday in a query I answered about a divorce record, I did not give the complete reference this time. Here it is - the genealogist's Bible, as far as I am concerned. The Handy Book for Genealogists - 9th Edition, published by The Everton Publishers. You can order it directly from them at P.O. Box 368, Logan, Utah 84323, on the Internet from Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Ancestry, etc. or probably find it at a Borders or Barnes & Noble bookstore. I believe it is around $35.00 now but worth every penny. Mimi Stang

    3. You can also order "Where to Write for Vital Records" from the government. It's free (or was the last time I checked). The last date was 1993 but a telephone verifies the information. And check, they may have come out with a mroe recent edition. It covers all the state offices. No counties, unfortunately, but on the occasions when I needed county information, the main office sent me a list of addresses for the counties. "Where to Write for Vital Records", U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Publication No. (PHS) 93-1142. 3. Mimi - you forgot to mention you cannot get a birth certificate from 1916 to date unless you can prove you are a family member and the person you want the certificate of is deceased. I have the death certificate of my mothers brother who was born in 1924, but I had to prove I was a family member before she would let me have it. She stated the reason was because he was born after 1916. Being born 1916 they could still be living and they will not give those out except to the person themselves. Just thought I would as my 2 cents if that is ok. 3. In regard to the Kewanee 1902 birth certificate, I would contact Vital Statistics in Springfield for one that old. That way, even if he was born "over the county line" in a rural environment, they would do a search for that whole year. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [ILHENRY-L] Re Bureau County Genealogical Society Newsletter
    2. Hi listers; Carol Shipp wrote a very nice article in the July-August BCGS Newsletter about our restoration project at Hunter Cemetery. Thank you Carol, we appreciate the publicity and the support of the BCGS. However, there is a typo in our email address. Just in case any of you wonderful people out there are interested in pitching in a few hours on a Sat. or Sun., and would to contact us for more information, our email address is: [email protected] The first "J" was left off our address in the newsletter. BTW, as of last Sunday, my husband and I alone, have succeeded in clearing 1/3 of the cemetery! That, in just 5 weekends time! I believe we have given sunlight to areas of this cemetery that haven't seen it in well over 50+ years! Mikki Judge Buffalo, IA

    2. According to the Handybook for Genealogists, in Henry County, the Clerk of Circuit Court has divorce records but they only date from 1880. Once again I will get on my soapbox and say that every genealogist, new and seasoned, should have a copy of the Everton's Handybook in their their home library. It is now in its 9th edition (1999) and gives the information on what records (marriage, birth, divorce, probate, etc.) are available in each county in the United States - dates covered, address and telephone of the county office. It also tells the date that each county was created and the parent county or territory from which it was created. A must when searching for the proper county of your ancestors. There are also addresses of libraries and genealogfical societies and maps for each state - it is a real goldmine of information and so often when I answer questions such as this one on divorce records, I find the answer in the Handybook! 3. Ahlive, Those records should be at the courthouse in Cambridge, Illinois. It is the county seat for Henry County. If you can't find anything there then try WIU(western illinois university)at Macomb, Illinois. You will go to the library there. They have a lot of Henry County information along with other counties in the area.
