Dear Fellow Historians: I am looking for information on my great-great uncle, Horatio G. Sanford, who was a member of the 124th Illinois Infantry from Kewanee. He was born and raised in Belchertown, MA. He left Belchertown sometime before the Civil War with his cousin (whom I believe was O.H. Loomis) and settled in Kewanee where they planted fruit trees and potatoes on their land (according to his diary). Horatio died from wounds on July 17, 1864. His effects: two pocket dairies and a photograph album, were given to his agent, O.H. Loomis. The second of the dairies, came down through the family to my grandmother and then to me, but no-one knows of the whereabouts of the first diary or the photo album. I am writing to you in hopes that one of you may have information on Horatio Sanford, or O.H. Loomis -- I would like to contact his descendants. The original of this diary is in the Belchertown Historical Society. I sent a copy of it to the Kewanee Historical Society in 1992, but never received any acknowledgement from that organization that they received it. Horatio's name appears on the Civil War monument on the town green in Belchertown. Is there a Civil War monument in Kewanee with his name on it? Thank in advance for your help with this request. Thanks so much to Ruth and Carole for answering my question. I'm going to send away for that marriage License for my gg-grandmother and her second (?) husband. This could very well be the breakthrough that I am looking for on this line! Shelly in California << I have two: "Return of Marriage to County Clerk" from 1890s lists place of residence, occupation (for groom), age, color, race, place of birth, parents' names, whether first marriage, place and date of marriage, witnesses. Hope this helps. Ruth >> <<Ruth is right. When you order a copy of a Illinois Marriage License. You get the Marriage License and the Marriage Application certificate which is address is the Illinois State Board of Health. It lists Name, Place of Residence, Occupation, Age next Birthday, Place of Birth, Father's name, Mother's Maiden Name, Number of marriage, Married at, and Witnesses, for both the bride and the groom. Hello. I found a reference to my gg-grandmother on the IL marriage index for a marriage in 1900, Henry County. This record would have been her second (?) marriage, not the one that includes my line. Can someone tell me what information might be provided on the actual license/certificate as far as personal and family information during this time period? I would like to order it if it would be helpful, but have found that some states/counties give only limited information which didn't help in tracing that line. Thank you, Shelly in California

But this is odd, although the list you refer to has more names in it, I found some of my family surnames in the Ancestry.com list that are from Henry county that are not in that state website! DeeDee
I have found quite a few Henry County marriages in the Ancestry.Com listing that are not currently included in the Illinois Marriage Register. It is worth looking in both places. The Illinois Register for Henry County does not go beyond 1878 and I found some in Ancestry as late as 1900. The Ancestry site does not currently list Mercer County in its listings. I am eagerly awaiting their posting of Bureau County, as I have found several Bureau County families in the Henry County site. www.ancestry.com has the Illinois Marriage from 1851 to 1900 for free for about another week. Look in recent databases: Ancestry.com - Recent Databases or http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/recent.asp good luck! DeeDee
Hi everyone, Does anyone have any information on this marriage: John CONARD to Lena STILES, Aug. 8, 1868, in Henry Co.? Thanks, Sandy
I am looking for J. L. Finch who is shown in the 1876 Henry County Atlas as having a 78 acre farm in Section 16 of Edford Township. Does anyone have any information on this family, or does anyone have access to the 1870 and/or 1880 Federal Census to provide anything on this family? Any help is most welcomed. John S. Raschke

Cindy - Thank you so much for checking for me! I'll keep looking. . . Hello. I am new to this list and hope that someone might be able to help me locate my MONROE family in Kewanee, Henry County. I have letters written by my paternal G-grandfather to my grandmother, covering the years of 1946 - 48. At the time, he was living in Kewanee and had for at least 28 years (c. 1918). The letters state that he lived in the West part of town and that he owned 3 lots. This is what I know: Charles Leroy MONROE DOB: Likely January 21, 1886, perhaps Buda, Bureau County (no cert. found) DOD: Unknown Living on one of the lots was "Grandma" and "Uncle Ed." Also mentioned was a daughter of CL Monroe. "Doris" married to someone with the nickname of "Whittier," and had a child named "Les" who would have been born about 1946. They were living in Galesburg, Knox County. There was another mention of "Bob" who I assume was another child of CL MONROE. I would appreciate contact with anyone who might be able to connect me with sources of information on them. I am particularly interested in the death date of Charles Leroy MONROE. Thank you very much, Shelly (California)
