    2. Melissa Peters
    3. Dear Listmembers, As I go about my many routines for the holiday season, I think about the many family members I have gained and lost this year. I thought I would stop what I was doing, log on an wish all of you people a joyous holiday season. Maybe some of you are or know people we are related to in one way or another. Either way, I feel we are one big group of people who care about the same thing. So Merry Christmas. May your tummies be full and your stockings stuffed. 1. [ILHENRY-L] WATSON, Sadie and George, East Moline, Illinois
    2. John W. Sharp
    3. I just joined the list. I am looking for information on SADIE WATSON, b. February 28, 1899, died October 4, 1989, and probably her son GEORGE A. WATSON, born August 27, 1921, died December 16, 1995. Their last residence, according to Social Security Death Index is East Moline, Rock Island, Illinois. Is that place in Henry County, Illinois? Does anyone know who I could turn to for help in locating their obituaries? I don't know the population of the area, but how big a job would it be to find their obituaries? John

    1. [ILHENRY-L] Old Christmas memories
    2. Carroll & Sally
    3. I remember a christmas in 1950, in Geneseo, when Santa came early. He brought in the presants, then we all set on his lap for him to give us ours. I got a pair of wool pants that year. I just found out 10 years ago that there was a poor family in town, The families paid the father 25 cents to bring the presants from the lawn into the house. This helped that family have a christmas also. I don't know which is the nicest memory. Seeing Santa or knowing how it helped someone else. I hope the children grew up to appreciate the wonderful father. Sally ==== SCSPARTA Mailing List ==== This list is for genealogical and historical research ONLY. We practice the Golden Rule here. 1. Re: [ILHENRY-L] Henry county realestate/social circles late 19th early 20th century
    2. Hi, Stephen, I live at 622 S. Oakwood Ave. in Geneseo and I can assure you the house on Oakwood is still there. Its isn't that large, a small frame home, probably two bedrooms upstairs, and one down. Nice yard, and a wonderful family with a couple of children live there. As far as the one on N. State St., addresses may have changed since there is a newer home in that block, so the address may have been moved to 329. There IS a brick home at that address and the one with the correct address is next door, its a very large frame home made into an apartment house. Behind the brick house, now owned by Jim and Michelle Glazier, is the Grace United Methodist Church. Also, I think the cottages you mentioned may have been on the Rock River, not Creek. Many people in the area have cottages at Shady Beach or Indian Mounds on the Rock River about 6-8 miles north of Geneseo. There were Allens in Geneseo when I was growing up, and I think, (I can check when I get home) a Mr. Allen owned the property where my home is. Mrs. Phyllis Allen lives on Park St., and I think my sixth grade teacher was Miss Morrow. Doris Morrow was a well respected teacher and historian at the Geneseo Library until her death. Let me know if any of this is what you're looking for and if I can be of assistance further. Kathy Minder 622 S. My Allen family line lived in Atkinson and Geneseo from 1866 until mid 1930's and may still have unknown cousins there. > Family lore is that they owned very expensive homes, along with cottages on Rock Creek. In 1930 my great great grandfather John Allen had a 4 bedroom brick house listed worth $10,000 at 325 N. State Street and his brother Andrew Allen and wife Dana Burton lived at 602 Oakwood with a house value of $4500. I have side photos of the one on State Street and their is a building that looks like a big church or hall next to it. Are these buildings still standing? I tried to do a check online and came up with nothing. > Would those prices be normal or above average? I have been arguing that they were nice but not mansions. Other family members insist that they were extremely large. Per my mother, the Allen family had quite a bit of money until the depression and John Allen loaned it out and never got repayed as no one had the money during the depression. My mother claims she saw one suitcase filled to the top with checks he had written and that the family had gotten this wealth from the invention of certain farm equipment. My Great Great Grandmother and Great Grandmother both claimed to have gone to Augustana College in the 1880's and 1920's and my great grandmother had one of the first cars in the area. She also toured with Miller's All Girl Band. > One of my reasons I wonder is that I do not see the Allen family mentioned in any of the county guides and I am not finding anyone else researching them. From what documented sources I dont see them as being outstanding. Did Geneseo have a large social scene during the late 1800's early 1900's? > Any info appreciated. I am sorry to say that ANOTHER of my uncles has passed away and I was very close to this one as well. I tlaked to him just the day before he died. At that time he was supposed to be released from the hospital the next day. He took a sudden turn for the worse and went quietly in his sleep. I am posting his obit here as he was a Kewanee native. Please forgive me but I am simply not up to looking anything up or working on death and cemetery records right now.
