Ernest (b.1880) Jacob R.( b.1883 d.1953) son Jerry Ronald b. 1946 Crawford, John H. one of the substantial business men of Hamilton, and one of its most prominent citizens, was born October, 5, 1864, a son of Henry F. and Sarah J. (white) Crawford, the latter being the second wife of Henry F. Crawford. He was born (Henry) August 9, 1812, and died November 11, 1885, while she (Sarah) was born April 5th, 1842 and died in January, 1915. The paternal grandfather, a native of Virginia, moved to Ohio, and there he reared his family, and died. Henry F. Crawford left Ohio for southern Illinois, when he was eighteen years old, and located in Wayne County, where he was first married, and by that union had nine children, of whom two survive to date, namely: Reuben and Nancy, who is Mrs. Charles Burlingame, both live at Albion, Edwards Co. Illinois. By his second marriage Henry had seven sons, and four daughters, of whom three sons and daughters survive, namely : Ernest, who lives at Beaver Oklahoma, Jacob R. who lives in Montana, Olive, who is Mrs. William Swigelson, lives at Keokuk, Iowa, Sadie who is Mrs. Edward Moxley, lives in Boulder Colorado, Jennie who is Mrs. Moses Baum lives at Quincy, Ill. and John H. The maternal grandparents were natives of New York who came west to Michigan and inn 1853 , located to Hancock County, spending the remainder of their years there. Their names were John and Susan J. (Rogers) White. John Crawford began to be self supporting after his father's death, first as a farm hand and dairy helper, and later as a carpenter and wagon maker, working at his trades some years with contractors. He then was yard salesman in a lumber yard, and for four years was engaged in the dairy business, when in 1907 he opened his present popular restaurant at Hamilton, and has since been engaged in conducting it. On September 9, 1897, Mr. Crawford was married to Mrs. Florence A. Dennis, widow of Charles Edward Dennis and a daughter of William and Sarah S. (Irwin) Moore. By her first marriage she had a son Fredrick W. Dennis of Hamilton, who married Bertha Prouty, of Keokuk, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs.. Crawford have no children. Mr. Crawford is a Democrat and served as alderman of the old Third Ward of Hamilton 1892-1901. After Hamilton adopted the commission form of government, was city commissioner for two years, from 1913-1915. In 1912 he was elected a justice of the peace, and still holds that office. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a trustee and chairman of the official board. His fraternal affiliations are with the Hamilton Lodge No. 697. I.O.O.F. in which he has passed all the chairs. He compiled the first ordinance revision that was ever published in 18895, which remained in effect until 1913,, when the commission form of government was adopted. This action necessitated a vast amount of research of the records, and hunting for others that had been lost, and in this work and the ordinance revision of 1913. Mr. Crawford did signally valuable service as a member of the revision committee.
