Margaret Ann McCants Griffitts, 1836-1915 "Death of Mrs. Margaret Griffitts Mrs. Margaret Griffitts died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Blair in this city Sunday morning, after a long illness, aged 78 years, 9 months and 11 days. Margaret McCants was the daughter of William and Jane McCants who came here from Kentucky in an early day. She was born in Carthage, Nov. 6, 1836, and she has probably had the longest continual residence in this city of any citizen. She was one of a family of eight children--four boys and four girls; Samuel died in Colchester in 1908; William McCants died in Bloomfield, Ia., in 1902; Lee McCants, of Bloomfield who was unable to be here for the funeral; Edw. McCants died in Carthage in July, 1914; Sarah J. Ramsey, of Stillwater, Okla., unable to be here; Mrs. Mary Johns, died in Carthage over twenty years ago and Mrs. Angeline Woodburn of this city. She was married to Thos. B. Griffitts in 1869, and was a good mother to his six children, so much so that they never knew the loss of a mother's care and interest. Of these children four survive. Samuel of St. Louis; Stephen A. of Spokane; Mrs. Mina Roberts, of Isabelle, Kas., and Mrs. Adda Blair, who has given Mrs.Griffitts a daughter's love and devotion.Mr. Griffitts, who was one of the old settlers of this city, died Jan. 23 1911. Mrs. Griffitts became a member of the Presbyterian church at the age of 12, but because of her unstable health did not follow the activities of her church very closely. She led a very quiet, kindly life, and nought but good can be said of her. The funeral was held from the residence of Mrs. Blair yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J.W. Porter officiating. Interment at Moss Ridge." The Carthage Republican, August 11, 1915, pg. 8, col. 5. Join 18 million Eudora users by signing up for a free Eudora Web-Mail account at http://www.eudoramail.com
