He was born April 14, 1909, in Maynard, Iowa, the son of John William and Katherine Huebner Kappmeyer and the adopted son of Dr. C.C. and Dr. B.A. Hall. On Feb. 14, 1937, in Maynard, he married Marguerite Cook. She died April 30, 1985. He married E. Mary Kirkpatrick on Dec. 27, 1986. She died Feb. 10, 1994. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Karen) Weyand of Kansas City, Mo., Kathy Marion of Keokuk, Iowa, and Mrs. Philip (Carla) Sherwin of Cape Coral, Fla.; one step-daughter, Elizabeth Fraser of North Bay, Ontario; one step-son, Jim Kirkpatrick of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Mrs. Victor (Rozilla) Hall Hoth of Lansing, Iowa; two granddaughters, Laura Gulick of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Holly Weyand of Denver, Colo.; two step-granddaughters, Joy Kirkpatrick of Warsaw and Gayle Kohmetscher of St. Louis, Mo.; two great-grandsons; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1927 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1931. He graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1935, served his internship at Chicago's Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, and established an office in Hamilton in August 1936, where he continued to practice medicine until his retirement in July 1985. He left his practice briefly to complete his post-graduate study at Tulane University in 1946 and to serve a residency at Leigh Memorial Hospital and as a physician in the Public Health Service at the U.S. Marine Base Hospital in Norfolk, Va., during 1946 to 1948. He also practiced in Quincy. He served on the staffs of St. Joseph, Graham, Keokuk Area Hospitals, and Memorial Hospital Carthage. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Illinois State Medical Society, Hancock County Medical Society, and the Iowa State Medical Society. During his 49 years of practice in Hamilton and neighboring towns throughout the tri-state area, he made hundreds of house calls and delivered over 1,200 babies. He served as a physician to Camp Eastman and was an honorary Eagle Scout. He was initiated into the Fifty Year Club of the Illinois State Medical Society on April 5, 1986. The familiar country doctor carrying the two black leather medical bags was also known throughout the community as a colorful character entertaining civic organizations, churches, clubs, youth groups, college alumni, and medical colleagues with magic and ventriloquism. He was elected to the Society of American Magicians in 1943. He was a member of the Magicians Round Table in Chicago and the International Brotherhood of Ventriloquists. He continued his lifelong hobby until his 90th year with his companion dummy Ernest by entertaining groups of preschool children who regularly visited Montebello residents. He was a 32nd degree Mason, affiliated in the Valley of Quincy Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Hamilton for many years. He became a member of Christ Lutheran Church upon his retirement in Nauvoo in 1985. He was deeply committed to the health and well-being of the community. He provided assistance to further and advance community projects in the town of his birthplace as well as Hamilton, and he was an avid supporter of the Hamilton Public Library. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Hamilton with Rev. Samuel Laswell and Pastor Tom Krieger officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday (today), with the family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton. Memorials may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, Christ Lutheran Church and the Hamilton Public Library. HCJP 7/26/00
