Dear Seekers, In response to the query from Peggy PUTZLER [PegPz@aol.com] posted on 'forum board' and this list re: Surname: Heberer, Rahn, Reynolds Looking for the Curry Cemetery. My gggrandmother, Clara Ann Heberer Rahn Reynolds was buried in this cemetery in 1930s or 40s. She lived her whole life of 85 years in Sonora Township. Any help in locating cemetery would be appreciated. ------ I knew there was a CURRY Cemetery - but what I did not know is that it has had a name change, of all things! I have typed surnames in 'caps' for ease in reading. Entry from the 1968 History of Hancock Co., Sonora Twp. portion (pg. 555: The CURRY or Oak Grove Cemetery is located across the road from Golden's Point Church. (this is Golden's Point Christian Church - the GOLDENs were a pioneer family in Sonora Twp.) Like the STEARNS [i.e.,Cemetery], it is kept neat and clean thanks to the care and interest of those who have relatives and friends buried there. Among these are: John LUCE, Agnes BENNETT, Erastus HAZEN and his wife, Eli LAYMAN, Peter WOLFE, Peter SINELE, John McCRORY and wife, Joseph McCANDLESS, Antoine COEUR, Selah G. HART, Hezekiah BRANT, Emile LIEGEROT, Carter JONES, Julius CHRISTY, John CURREY and family, Thomas OUTHIER, HANSONs, SIMPSONs, and many other names that are, or have been known , in connection with this community. The HAZENs owned the land, and the first graves were on the hillside among the trees. This cemetery is now known as the Oak Grove Cemetery. - ----------------------------------------------------- I am not familiar with Golden's Point Church... but there is a STEARNS Cemetery located about half way between Nauvoo and Hamilton in western Hancock Co, about a mile and a half back from the river. It is just one mile by the speedometer on the winding road north of the Golden's Point Church so - guessing that the 'church' is pretty much in the same general vicinity, i.e., about half way between Nauvoo and Hamilton. Perhaps someone else can provide some knowledge of it. The main town in Sonora Twp. is Nauvoo (right on the Mississippi River); and there is a small town of Powellton which is due east of Nauvoo. I do not know the coordinates of the Oak Grove (Curry) Cemetery. I suggest you write to the Hancock Co. Historical Society and ask for the exact location. They will know - or know who to call to find out - friendliest bunch of people anywhere! If you are visiting the area and don't know where a cemetery, or whatever, is, ask at a gas station or just ask a person you see on the street - someone will know. Good hunting - good luck!
