This young man, Samuel Spitler DAVIS, was killed in the famous Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia. September 1, 1864, when he was born in 1841. He was born in Virginia, but was in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois, when he was mustered. I have photographs of his stone. They read: Company D 78 Illinois Infantry (from abbreviations).
