In response to the original msg. from Nancy LaPlante,LdyBery@aol.com - below, the following is provided: Date: Sunday, September 10, 2000 3:18 PM Subject: Elsa A. Walker From: LdyBery@aol.com To: michelle@netcare.com; RLefler637@aol.com bobert@panacom.com; lclarkvalpo@webtv.net> Date: Sunday, September 10, 2000 3:18 PM Subject: Elsa A. Walker Greetings! I found your names listed on the Hancock County web site which said you were all researching the Walker surname. I'm hoping one (Or all!) of you can help me! I have traced my family back to John Gibbs who married Elsa A. Walker (she was known as Elsie) in Carthage Illinois on 9/6/1853. I am sending for their marriage certificate but in the meantime I was hoping someone might have information on Elsa. I know that John and Elsa had eleven children. At least one of them, Charles Samuel Gibbs, was born in Carthage. John headed out west for the gold rush and is buried in the town of Woodland Park, Colorado. Does this information tie into anything you know of the Walker family? Thank you for your help....Nancy LaPlante http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~laplante/WC_TOC.HTM Dear Nancy, and all, The GIBBS name is not familiar to me, but found the following in the book, PIONEERS OF THE PRAIRIE, by Wilma BRUNENN, priv. pub. ca. 1985. Book is full of errata. I can not/do not attest to the accuracy of the data. Book began as author's own family history - then she tried to include every 'pioneer' in Hancock Co. Data was compiled from old county records; cemetery walks; old newspapers; etc. NOTE: comments, etc., in brackets [] are mine - not BRUNNENN's.] GIBBS, Carl S. - b. 1869; d. Sep 1937. [STROH is a good ole German name from/in Pennsylvania - there is a popular beer in the Pittsburgh, PA area - Stroh's Beer - just throwing that in.] According to the newspapers [unnamed], Thomas WALKER, Sr. joined a party traveling to California, in 1849, and was killed by a bear. Members of his family say he was killed for his gold by his partner, one Joel LEDFORD. Mr. WALKER was never heard of again. [so - according to the paragraph above, Thomas F. WALKER, Sr., was Thomas Franklin WALKER...and then it follows that Thomas F. (Franklin) WALKER, b.1839, was Thomas F. WALKER, Jr.. I don't know that he was known with the "Jr." on his name or not, but surely could have been.] - ---------------------------end of data----------------------------- Perhaps the above data will discover/uncover more 'cousins'/descendants. If so, please send your data to the ILHANCOCK List. A reminder for any of you who do not have this bookmarked or saved: The website for the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 is: http://www2.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/marriage I am related to some of the WALKERS and some of the SIMMONS/SYMMONDS and WHITEs in Hancock Co. However, I have not got them all 'scoped out', so I really can not help further on these particular surnames, except that I am sure they were all honorable people. Have a great week!
