Mapes, 77, of Carthage, a retired telephone operator, died at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 8, 1989) in Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., where she had been visiting her daughter. Mrs. Mapes was born Oct. 30, 1912, in Hamilton, a daughter of Alfred and Pervie A. Sherrill Gibson. She married James Metternich who died in 1954. She later married Kenneth L. Mapes who died in December 1985. Mrs. Mapes was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage, and a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a daughter, Marlys J. Lawson of Fort Collins; a son, James A. Metternich of Bettendorf, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy L. Huls of Carthage; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage by the Rev. John B. Jamison. Burial will be in the Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation will be held in the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hancock County Cancer Society.
