J. Koontz died very suddenly at her home near Carthage, Saturday evening about 6:30 o'clock May 26, aged 76 years, 2 months and 29 days. Sarah K. Kimbrough was the oldest daughter of William R. and Elizabeth (Dale) Kimbrough, and was born in south east Carthage township, Feb. 27, 1858. She was united in marriage to James Briley of Henderson county, Illinois in 1875. To this union were born William F. of Carthage, Thomas R., of Oskalooso, Iowa; Esta L. Sowers, deceased; Mrs. Elizabeth Earls, of Carthage. Their home was in Henderson county until the death of the husband and father in 1882. After that the mother and children came to the home of Mrs. Briley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Kimbrough, of east Carthage. In 1884 she was united in marriage to T. J. Koontz of East Carthage, who survives her, also the following children: Mrs. W. I. Earls, of Carthage, Ross of Santa Cruez, Calif.; Mrs. Alfred Wear, of Carthage; a brother, George W., of Arvada, Colo., and sister Mrs. Julia Ervin, of Denver, Colo. Two children, George H. and Christa, died in infancy. Three brothers, Thomas R., of Burnside; William L., of Elvaston, Ill.; and James W., of Denver, Colo., and two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Fleishman, of Hannibal, Mo., and Mrs. Rinda Fletcher, of Carthage, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Koontz was a member of the Christian church of Carthage. She was also a member of the Franklin club and was present at the last meeting at Mrs. Ralph Massie's home on Wednesday, May 23. Her name had been placed on the honor roll as an honorary member, since she was the oldest of the group. Mrs. Koontz was highly respected by all and greatly beloved by her intimate friends. She was fine and sweet-spirited and met life with a courage and fidelity to her duty. She leaves a precious memory to those relatives, friends and neighbors, who mourn her. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Christian church, Rev. Fred S. Nichols officiating. Burial at Seckman cemetery. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Briley and family, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Washburn and family of Columbus Junction, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Washburn and son of Whatcher, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fletcher and the Misses Stevens, of Keokuk, Ia.; and Miss Bessie Earls of Galesburg, Ill.
