He was born June 13, 1897, in Elvaston, a son of the late Charles F. and Dora Harrison Spence. He married Clara Hempen on Sept. 20, 1922, in Quincy, Ill. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1966. Mr. Spence was a farmer in the Elvaston area. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Meinert (Kathryn) Gronewold, Carthage, Ill., three grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Mr. Spence was also preceded in death by two brothers in infancy. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.ml. Saturday in the Lamporte Funeral Home, Hamilton. Rev. Von Waggoner will officiate. Internment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton. Visitation will be anytime after 1 p.m. Friday with the family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hancock County Cancer Foundation.
