BERRY. John C. Berry, son of Reece and Polly Atkins Berry, was born near Fountain Green, Ill., on Nov. 24, 1856, and passed away at his home in Carthage, Ill., April 21, 1931, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 27 days after a brief illness of pneumonia. The days of his early childhood were spent in Hancock county, the family moving to Missouri when he was just a young man. In the year 1907 he returned to Illinois, where he has since made his home. His immediate family, consisting of parents, one brother, William Berry, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Smith and Mrs. Edith Villers, preceded him in death many years ago, and he has made his home with friends and kinfolk for the last twenty years. He greatly appreciated all they did for him and was respected by all of them. Being raised by Christian parents in the Baptist faith, he was a firm believer in all that was right and just. Uncle John, as he was known to all his acquaintances, had many friends as his kindness to others was remarkable. In his private life and dealings with his fellowmen he was strictly honest, holding his word in the highest honor. Always trying to follow the golden rule, he was beautifully child-like in his honesty and sincerity, ever guided by the truth, "it is more blessed to give than to receive." Mrs. Frank Gamage, of Plymouth, is a niece of Mr. Berry. "He shall sleep, but not forever, In the lone and silent grave, Blessed be the Lord that taketh, Blessed be the Lord that gave." Funeral services were conducted from the Hearne funeral home April 23rd, at 2:00 p.m., by Elder Claud E. Webb, of Bentley. The body was laid in the old brick cemetery.
