Il Obituaries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits?read=184 Surname: Cannon, Grove ------------------------- The Carthage Republican Carthage, Illinois Thursday June 29, 1871 Page 3 Column 2 DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN. — Mr. Richard Cannon, one of the oldest citizens of this county, died at his residence in this city on Tuesday morning, 27th inst. about 5 o'clock. The deceased was born in South Carolina, not far from the North Carolina line in the year 1800. He became a resident of Morgan county, Ill., as early as 1822, removing to Hancock county ten years later, where he has since resided. In the early history of this county, Mr. Cannon was entrusted with numerous official positions from justice of the peace to county collector. He held the latter office two years with great acceptability. He was a justice of the peace for many years, and was considered a well-informed and impartial officer. In his private relatives, Mr. Cannon was always held in the highest esteem as a citizen and neighbor. His dealings were always conducted upon the strictest principles of fairness and honor. We believe this is the general verdict of public opinion concerning the deceased. Mr. Cannon leaves a large circle of relations, who are among our most respected citizens, to mourn his loss.
