Il Obituaries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits?read=262 Surname: Doud, Campbell, Hartford, Sumerville, Richardson, Davis, Nisley, Booth, Nisley ------------------------- Hancock County News, 7/29/1891, Ferris, Hancock County, Illinois Died in this place, of dysentery, July 29, 1891, Rev. Fayette DOUD, aged 62 years, 10 months and 12 days. Deceased was born in Ohio. When a boy he moved with his father's family to Grundy County, Ill. He was raised on the farm and was given a liberal education. When about 23 years of age he joined the Methodist Protestant Church, and became an itinerant minister, and during the last 40 years has served with distinction in this connection. Nineteen years ago he was called to serve this people. He served them two years and then accepted a call to Maroa, this state, staying one year. During that year a bronchial trouble that had annoyed him considerably in the past, developed itself so that he was unable to continue in the ministery. On this account he came back here and purchased a farm, removing here the same year, and has been one of our noblest citizens ever since. For honesty and integrity no man stood higher. In 1875 he engaged in the mercantile business with Harrison W. CAMPBELL. But later on he determined to quit this business. He sold out and soon after went into the grain business, and thus continued until his death, having quite a large amount to store at the time. During his stay with this people he has served them with distinction, filling every position to the letter. Not a public enterprise has failed to receive his heartiest endorsement, both with money and time. Thus a useful life has been spent. As a christian gentleman none had higher attainments. He realized and mentioned when his life's work was done. And farther on when telling the family what disposition to make of the business he told them that he was ready for the change, and that all was well in the beyond. He then calmly laid himself down and in a short time was unconscious of the doings of this world. Nearly 50 buggies and carriages followed the remains to its last resting place in Moss Ridge Cemetary. Rev. Strong, of LaHarpe, conducted the services, assisted by Revs. Anthony and Ward. Mr. Doud was twice married; first in 1850, to Miss Sarah E. HARTFORD. To this union seven children were born, three of whom are still living, as follows: Mrs. Ellen SUMERVILLE, of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. RICHARDSON and MRS. DAVIS, of this place. Second, in 1863 to Miss Eliza J. NISLEY. To this union there were nine children, seven of whom are still living, as follows: Mattie, Herman, Charles, Robert, Edward, Lee and Winnie. A wife, ten children, two brothers and one sister, Mrs. BOOTH, are the immediate mourners. Israel DOUD of Eldora, Iowa, Davis DOUD of Gardner, Ill., and Mrs. Chloe BOOTH of Morris, Ill., were in attendance at the funeral. Additional notice appearing in the same newspaper: ...Two elections are on tapis, caused by the death of Rev. Doud. One for village trustee and one school director.
