Surviving are her widower and three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Bachman of Hazelton, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Jenkins of Harvey and Mrs. Pearl Mathewson of Peoria. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. ---------------------- Hancock County Journal Carthage, Illinois Thursday December 25, 1952 Page 8 Column 1 Funeral for Mrs. John Austin, 85, Held Last Friday Funeral services for Mrs. John Austin, 85, of the Middle Creek vicinity were held Friday at 2 p.m., in The Elms funeral home. Rev. Franklin McGuire officiated and burial was in Moss Ridge cemetery. Music was in charge of Mrs. Vernen Webster and Mrs. Ray Osterhouse. The pallbearers were grandchildren of Mrs. Austin. Mrs. Austin died suddenly Dec. 17 in her home. Barthena Ellen Smith, one of eight children of William and Artemissa Van Dyke Smith, was born Aug. 25, 1867 in the Middle Creek vicinity, Jan. 20, 1886, she married John T. Austin in Carthage. To this union were born three daughters — Ethel, Grace and Pearl. At an early age she united with the Oak Grove Christian Church. Surviving are the widower, the daughters: Mrs. Ethel Bachman of Hazelton, Iowa, Mrs. Grace Jenkins of Harvey, and Mrs. Pearl Matthewson of Peoria; nine grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; one brother, Court Smith of Bentley and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. and Mrs. Austin observed their 66th wedding anniversary last Jan. 20 in their home. No formal celebration was held but two of their daughters, Mrs. Mathewson and Mrs. Bachman, were with them for the day.
