The AUGUSTA TAVERN may also have been known as or associated with the “COMMERCIAL HOTEL” – various family records and old newspaper clippings make reference to both names. William Bagby and his wife Eliza Waring Bagby operated the AUGUSTA TAVERN for about 29 years although the exact dates of operation by them are not positively documented. They moved from North East Township in Adams County, Illinois to Augusta, Hancock County, Illinois, in 1854 where they with their family began operation of the AUGUSTA TAVERN (or COMMERCIAL HOTEL). The last three of their nine children (Charles Fredrick Bagby, Basil Augustus Bagby, and Addie L. Bagby Byrns) were born in Augusta while William and Eliza operated the tavern. About 1883 William and Eliza Bagby (when 67 and 61 respectfully) traded the tavern for a farm in Adams County where they resided for several years. In 1885 they again located in Augusta, Illinois, were they spent the rest of their retired lives until 1908, when William Bagby died at the age of 91 and 1909, when Eliza Waring Bagby died several weeks before her 87 birthday.
