Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1098 Surname: ------------------------- Unfortunately I find no reference to the Augusta Tavern or the Commercial Hotel in our local history books. However, the Bagby name does appear! According to the Augusta Story William W. Bagby was a citizen of Augusta previous to the Civil War, being born in 1816 and dying in 1908. It does not list his state of birth or when he came to the twp. In the Roll of Honor of Civil War Soldiers who Enlisted From Augusta Twp. (same book) it again lists Wm. Wallace Bagby as being in the 7th Ill. Art. I am somewhat confused in the references to burials at the Pulaski Cemetery whether Mr. Bagby is among those having their final resting place there or if the reference simply includes him again as one who was a Civil War vet. from this twp. Pulaski was once a thriving town but when the railroad went through just "up the road", the population went to the railroad and made Augusta the larger of the two towns. Pulaski is mostly a cemetery and an intersection today. I hope you have put your inquiry on Adams Co.,as well, since Augusta is within 2 miles of the Adams County line and you may find information there.
