    1. Harper, Dye in Hancock Co.
    2. Henry P. Harper died Apr. 29, 1874 in Carthage. I have one obit, but it does not say where he was buried. Alfred Marion Harper probably died between 1896 and 1909. I do not have an obit for him or know where he was buried. Wilson Dye was a bridge builder, I believe, and probably died 1859/1860. I do not have an obit for him or know where he was buried. I've checked the cemeteries and death records on the internet, but no luck. If anyone can help me out with these, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Sandy

And are those the only mortality schedules that have been found? and do the mortality schedules ever show where the person was buried? And subsequently: The county clerk told me [Robert] yesterday that he thought the township clerks may have kept death records in early years, until it was decided to centralize them on a county level at the courthouse. But he also told me thought few if any such township records have been preserved. Robert, I found the original pages on Ancestry.com. At present they have online a complete set of Mortality Schedules for Hancock County in 1850, 1860 and 1880. They do not have 1870 online but an informational section claims that those images will be available at some time in the future. Like you, I certainly WISH that burial locations had been included...... Marcia

I've not found much information at this point other than the sale of it to a William Davidson in 1858 (From Bryant Bartlett). The property it sat on was purchased in 1848 (by Bartlett), so I'm guessing that it started up in 1848 or within a couple of years. I don't know much else, but thought I'd share that info in case you are still trying to find the ferry company that your Great Grandfather operated.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eg.2ADI/2315 Message Board Post: Just purchased an old house in Hamilton, had some fun tracing back records at the County Courthouse. I'd love to find out some basic information about the previous occupants and I'd be just thrilled to see pictures of the house from years past. Occupants in pictures with the house would be the best of course! I've not yet researched fully the Ferry Co. mentioned above, but it seems that Bartlett sold it to Davidson along with another piece of land that my house was on in 1858. The house was finished around 1860, but there was a mechanics lein placed on it due to non-payment by Davidson. It looks like Bartlett probably took the Ferry Co back due to Davidson defaulting on the loan, but the Co. was forced to buy my house back at an auction for $109.55. The Company then sold it to Bartlett shortly after that. I know Bartlett must have been an important guy as I found the information about his purchasing a lot of the land (now in Hamilton) from the government. So, here's some more detailed information about the owners/inhabitants of my house gathered from deeds: William Davidson built house (never lived in it?) (1858-1860) Bryant and Louisa M Bartlett (1860-1867) Thomas L. Nichols and Wife (1867-1892) Oliver and Eliza Craig (1892-1903) W. and Tabitha Alston (1903-1929) Donald R. and Veta Mae Gordon (1933-1938)

    3. Hi, Just thought I would share some good news I learned today. First, the land-owner and myself met at the cemetery today (unplanned), and talked about the access to the cemetery, and we agreed that whichever route we choose for the access will be written up in an easement to insure access after the CRP program ends and they start crop farming between the creek and the cemetery. We are hoping for a rock road going north from the bridge to the stage coach road, and that was mowed today as a beginning place to see whether it will work for the access. Also, the landowner talked about removing the remaining trees and stumps, and putting in a new fence for us, and also talked about some of the township officials working on getting rock or rip-rap to stop the erosion on the creek bank west of the cemetery. I can't begin to say how much I appreciate the help of the cemetery's neighbors. The big things that have been accomplished are the result of their hard work and help. The township road commissioner also recently graded the gravel road from the Middle Creek corner to the bridge, and it is much better than it was. I am very encouraged by the kindness of all these people. I've begun repairing bases and stones. And, I found a stone today outside the west fence, with the initials "J. B." on one end. Another mystery to unravel. I took a photo, and will send it to Ron Bryant, as the first thing that came to mind was "Josiah Bryant"? Robert

One tintype is of Mrs. Camp, a school teacher about 1875, probably in Harmony Township. Can anyone tell me more about her, or want a copy of the picture? I will be posting a copy to my website The Bridgewater Register at http://www.vernpaul.com Any information appreciated. List of photos is already posted at http://www.vernpaul.com/images/photos_bw.html Primary surnames are Bridgwater (Bridgewater) Lyon, Beard, Cullar, and McClure.

    3. Thanks again to Debby McCoy for clearing the logjam in my thinking process. I looked up Chloe Andrews last night, one of the four persons on the 1880 Mortality Schedule for Fountain Green Township for whom "PR" was shown in place of a family #. Debby suggested that it could stand for Physician's Report or Review. Chloe's parents, Albert and Clarissa (Smith) Andrews, married in Hancock County in 1853 and were counted in Fountain Green Township in the Federal Censuses of 1860 and 1870. In 1880 they were in Pilot Grove Township. A third possibility for why the census taker didn't get death information from a family could be that the family was no longer living in the Township. Another plausible reason could be that a deceased individual had lived alone. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~majorville/hancock/hancock.html Marcia Farina

I have the 1850 list for Hancock County, 1860 (Carthage, Fountain Green and Hancock Townships), and 1880 (Fountain Green Township) linked from this page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~majorville/hancock/hancock.html In the last two blocks of the 1880 Fountain Green schedule, there are several entries of "PR" instead of a family number. I have found nothing to give me a clue as to what that abbreviation might stand for and have racked my brain. If anyone has an idea I'd be grateful. I hope it's not something painfully obvious . Keep in mind, folks, that mortality schedules are no more (or less) reliable than any other census page. You'd think the would be ..... but I can point to an entry that shows a woman died in June; her tombstone says August and there was a newspaper report of her death in August. 2. Marcia C Farina
    3. Debby, PR = physician's report That makes so much sense. Thank you. Obviously, you're brilliant! As I understand the process, the enumerators were instructed to ask about deaths at each household, then submit the mortality schedules to the appropriate physicians for review. There were four people for whom PR was shown instead of a family #. I'm pretty sure who Scott Hartman was; have a strong hunch on the little Frank girl. The other two I haven't tracked down. I see two possibilities: - as you suggested, a person could have been transient and not associated with a household. - the census taker forgot to ask the question and the physician caught the omission. Thanks, thanks, thanks. Marcia Farina
