    1. [ILHANCOC] GPR/EMC work to locate stones
    2. Robert L. Webb
    3. Friends, In answer to a request, I will write this note regarding the proposed cost of having GPR/EMC work done in a limited fashion, just a real-time survey intended to locate stones, footstones, bases, or rocks beneath the surface, at the Old Brick cemetery. As a ballpark figure, the cost would be $1,200 per day for the real-time GPR survey work, $200/day per diem for the crew, plus roundtrip/onside mileage. Best wishes, Robert

Do they look familiar to you? I am also attaching information written down years ago, I am guessing it was my husband's great-grandfather Wm Lewis Gunnell or maybe written by his sister, Ida Gunnell Yearns, regarding the Shultz family. Would be interested in hearing from you as I don't have many clues in the way of the Shultz-Hanes families. Thanks, Julia

    1. [ILHANCOC] Old Fence at "Old Brick Cemetery"
    2. Robert L. Webb
    3. Just a note to say that I basically finished taking down the old fence at the Old Brick Cemetery this morning, and rolled up the old wire and barbed wire. New fence can be installed now as soon as the old stumps are dug out. I recently spoke by phone with a man who has electronic equipment to locate graves, stones underground, etc. To do a cemetery the size of Old Brick, and make a map of the graves which could be relied on (so that lots could be sold again, where there are no graves) would cost about $7,500.00. I should have asked him what it would cost to just go over the area and locate stones underground. Best wishes, Robert

    1. [ILHANCOC] Look-ups in La Harpe, Hancock County, Illinois for 1978, ...
    2. Larry Young
    3. Roberta, Would you look up a John Edgar YOUNG in your book? Allow me to give you a few details that may help. He was born 1788, married Mollie Mitchell 1809, died June 1840, and buried at La Harpe, IL. There are five children mentioned with only one buried locally. It was his son, William - born 1 Feb 1812, married 5 Mar 1835 to Hannah Reynolds, died 20 Oct 1861, and buried at La Harpe, IL. The other children and Mollie were buried in PA. Although I don't have proof, I get the feeling he left Mercer County, PA later in life and that he was a man of the cloth. Any help you provide is greatly appreciated and if nothing is found, then again I thank-you for your time and effort. 1. Re: [ILHANCOC] Cemetery Look up - McGee
    2. There are two McGee cemeteries in Hancock county. John Frost is unlisted in Warren Van Dine's reading of the Wythe township McGee cemetery in 1965, according to the Hancock County GenWeb listing of burials at that time. The web page gives an accurate description of the driving directions to the Wythe township McGee cemetery in the SW quartersection of Section 13. Mary has reported this cemetery no longer appears neglected as described by Van Dine in 1965. We appreciate the efforts of the volunteers and the taxpayers of Wythe township for efforts in maintaining it. You can also find this McGee cemetery at www.topozone.com by entering McGee cemetery, IL which marks the location and has its name. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilhancoc/mcgee.html The Illinois State Genealogical Cemetery Location Project page for Hancock county lists the other McGee cmeetery in Hancock county, located in the SE quartersection of Section 12 of Hancock township. The Hancock township McGee cemetery is not shown on the Hancock County GenWeb listing of cemeteries. There are a few Dillard family stones in this cemetery and Marcia Farina's Hills Grove cemetery partial listing of obituaries includes an obituary for Samuel McGee which states his parents and two sisters are buried at Hancock township McGee cemetery "on the farm." This cemetery is located just west of the Hancock-McDonough county line road about due east from Joetta, which can be located on www.topozone.com west and north of the village of Tennessee, Illinois. Hancock township McGee cemetery is in very poor condition. It is located perhaps 1/8th mile west of the county line road on private property. It would seem from the size of the cemetery that there would be more burials there than the four McGee burials and the Dillard stones. 2. Mary Keller
    3. I hope Karen Taylor responds to this one. The McGee Cemetery is west of Basco and a bit north on the west side of the road. A year or so ago there was a great effort to get that cemetery in respectable condition as it had fallen into neglect with a lot of overgrowth, etc. Karen and her husband were among those spear-heading the effort at the clean-up. I am told Wythe Twp. has the responsibility for the most rural cemeteries in the county and, of course, the cost of maintaining a cemetery gets pretty expensive when it is mowing season, etc. I was told that, as with all rural cemeteries, the people in the surrounding community were buried at McGee and many had been residents of the Bear Creek Twp. just across the road! My husband and I visited the cemetery last summer and it is looking much improved but a lot of work remains. It is a picturesque setting on a steep hillside. I don't know about those names who are buried there. There are still a number of monuments, some rather massive. You might find Mr. Frost! ----------------- >I am looking for the McGee Cemetery and John Frost buried there about > 1843 or 1844...can you tell me the exact location? > > Thanks, > Sue > > > <javascript:showpic('/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=D1&Date=20050803&Catego > ry=PHOTOGALLERIES&ArtNo=803001&Ref=PH&Template=galleryzoom&Params=Itemnr > =12',535,500)> > > Susan A. 2. Robert L. Webb
    3. Progress this week at Old Brick Cemetery includes - - found rocks sitting edge-ways, exactly 40 feet apart, along the south fence, which after measuring for awhile, and comparing with the stones, I realized were place there to mark rows. This will enable me to correct my "blueprint," as the alley apparently was only 4' on the three sides, and the rows (grave spaces) apparently 10' long rather than 11' as I had thought. This may enable me to be more accurate with my probing for stones in the future. Since work on the new fence could begin soon, and the fence row could be graded, I decided to cut off 6" pieces of PVC pipe and drive them into the ground to mark the rows on the south side (started, but not done yet). I also drove a fence post at the correct spot for the southwest corner of the fence (the old fence had that corner rounded off). - Elizabeth Cravens stone is now reset, mortared in, cosmetic work to seal cracks or breaks done, and basically finished. Almost all stones are standing now, but the temperature has to be well above freezing at night before mortar work is advised. - Annabel Wyatt stone is now basically finished, including cosmetic work on the cracks on the stone, and the break which has been epoxied back together. Cosmetic work on Minerva Kimbrough stone also finished. - White crosses made of PVC pipe set at the head of five unmarked graves. - Fence and barbed wire has now been removed on the north and west sides (east side was already removed), and rolled up, ready to be hauled off to the junk. South fence has not yet been removed. - Apparently Mr. Hartweg filled in the big swail on the trail coming to the cemetery on the path along his field, sometime this summer; I didn't realize it until today. It is now smooth sailing to come in that way; a truck loaded with rip-rap for the creek bank erosion could easily come in now. Besides the beautiful fall colors, I notice the sheep several places between my home and the cemetery. Yesterday, a black horse was standing at the edge of the road near the wooden bridge when I arrived. I've seen pheasant, quail, wild turkey, deer, etc. No wonder hunters know where the cemetery is. I'm not sure when hunting season begins, but I don't plan to be there, as last year I saw deer jumping 20 feet in the air, bounding across the field, and then heard shots. Best wishes, Robert
