The patches I've seen on e-bay show: (1) the courthouse, part of the U.S. flag and a waterfall or river flowing over a dam (multi-colored), or (2) the State of Illinois seal with the words "Sheriff" above the seal and "Hancock County" below in what looks like tan and brown. (Patch #2 is currently not on e-bay anymore.) I will try to get a copy of the article for you. This Chicago Tribune magaine is an unusual size and this article is larger than 8 1/2 x 11, so copying it will be interesting to say the least. Thank you again! Don (sgtdb)
Death records in Hancock County start in 1877. The IRAD depository at WIU in Macomb, Ill. has ones for 1883 on microfilm as does the Family History Library. Later ones are not at IRAD, but all are at the county courthouse. Hi Roberta I was just looking for the places that was listed on my husbands Sell line Civil War Papers. I wondered just where they were located as when the Sell children was growing up they lived in Birmingham. As for Pilot Grove having family buried there, I am not sure. It's possibly there are some Bodenhamers buried there? I have not checked it out for awhile. Who are you searching in Pilot Grove? I have Long family buried there and hoped they might be who you are looking for. Roberta Summers
I have a set of Hancock County Township Maps available from this webpage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~majorville/hancock/hancockmap.html The complete county is available in four sizes and each township is individually presented. In addition to towns, railroad lines and waterways, the details include section numbers and boundary lines, school, church and cemetery locations. Not all of the section numbers are completely legible, but if you understand how the sections are numbered you can quickly find a particular section. The numbering scheme is: 6 5 4 3 2 1 7 8 9 10 11 12 18 17 16 15 14 13 19 20 21 22 23 24 30 29 28 27 26 25 31 32 33 34 35 36 For research in all states, mark the following webpage as one of your favorites. I have found the state maps, county maps and indexes invaluable: http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/ Marcia Farina

On this location first was "Hill Distillery" which burned in 1865. The Hill family and associates built another building (the one that stands today) in its place. It was "The Warsaw Woolen Mill." It was operated as such for 30 years. Then it was run as "Huiskamp Shoe Factory" from 1904 until 1938. Then it became the "Grant Storage Battery Company" and then "Electric Storage Battery Company." But if you ever want anyone in this area to know what you are talking about, you just call it "The Battery Factory." If you have any other questions about Warsaw or Hancock County, I would be happy to oblige. By the way this information is obtained from the many history books that Hancock has published, not just from my head.
Maryjane Thank you ever so much for this information. Now I can see where the descendants lived. I have been to Illlinois twice but at the time I did not get a chance to check the places out. My husbands line is Sell--Sells. There are Tolands, Prices, Harvey, Greenleaf, Bodenhamer, Coe,Frank, and more who are or were in the area that is related. If you go to www.mapquest.com and enter "colmar, il" in search fields, the first map which comes up shows Colmar. Zoom in one level to see "Saint Mary" - unfortunately if you enter "saint mary, il" the star marking its location covers part of the name. Entering "pilot grove, il" will give you the correct location, but the name never appears, even with zooming in. Pilot Grove cemetery is located in Section 4 of Pilot Grove township, Hancock county, west of LaHarpe, then south at the Durham road. The cemetery name is visible on www.topozone.com, reached by entering Durham IL in the search fields and scrolling south on the maps. Mary is absolutely right regarding St. Mary's. For anyone who has not seen Civil War pensions, I have posted two on my website for Hancock County residents Riley and James Rampley (Walker Township). Those can be viewed at: http://www.rootdig.com/pensions/rileyrampley/ Riley is my great-great-grandfather. Michael Neill is correct that all of these places are townships but there is also a "town" named St. Mary's. At this point in time it is only a cluster of a few houses and a church. It is located just a few miles west of Colmar, which should appear on a modern-day map. I would like to know where St. Mary's was located in Hancock Co. Also Harmony and Pilot Grove. We had some descendants who lived in these places when they went into the Civil War. I'm looking for a shoulder patch of the above Sheriff's Department. A current one would be nice. I am VERY interested in getting the patch worn by their agency between 1966 - 1970 when Jamie Rhea was Sheriff. Letters to the current Sheriff have received no response. Also any information on former Sheriff Rhea and the two gentlemen who were his deputies during this time period would be appreciated. Hancock Co. S/O was profiled in an article in the Chicago Tribune magazine on November 1, 1970 entitled "Hello Sheriff? Someone stole my tractor radio. Tractor too." I have a copy of this article which sparked my interest in their department. Thanks & have a great day! Don
