    1. [ILHANCOC] McDERMOTT Surname
    2. Ginny McDermott
    3. My greatgrandfather, Patrick McDERMOTT and his spouse, Brigid DEEGAN McDermott, lived in Warsaw Illinois from 1871-1895(?). They are listed in Warsaw, Illinois in the Federal Census for 1880. Their last child, Emily, was born in Warsaw Illinois in 1871. One of their daughters, Anna, married Thomas LAFFEY there in 1881. The only other collateral name I have for them is CULLEN who lived across the River in Keokuk, IA. McDERMOTT daughters, Mary and Maggie lived there too. My curiosity is really about why they came to Warsaw IL. They married in Delaware; moved to Euclid OH; then to Hamtramck MI; Warsaw IL; and finally settled in Chicago before 1900. Ginny McDermott

    2. Shawnee: How good is your 1860 Hancock County Census? I tried looking at this one at the FHC and parts of it was too faded to read. Im looking for a Joseph H. Taylor, Robert Taylor, and/or Celia Taylor. Robert & Celia are Joseph's parents, and they supposedly came to IL from VT. Thanks so much! Marla in Las Vegas

    1. [ILHANCOC] 1850 Hancock County, Illinois Census
    2. Lee Hendricks
    3. Shawnee, Thanks for keeping an eye out for my Truitts. I was told once that some of the census takers "extended" their ink by adding water to it. That looks like the case in the 1850 census of Hancock County, Illinois. -- At least the microfilm copy they have at the LDS library here in Mesa, AZ. Parts of the county are OK, and then on some of the pages the writing fades out terribly. I was just wondering if your copy was that way, or if I have been looking at a particularly poor filming. Thanks again for all your efforts to further the family and local history of Hancock County, Illinois. One of the most beautiful places on earth... Ernest (b.1880) Jacob R.( b.1883 d.1953) son Jerry Ronald b. 1946 Crawford, John H. one of the substantial business men of Hamilton, and one of its most prominent citizens, was born October, 5, 1864, a son of Henry F. and Sarah J. (white) Crawford, the latter being the second wife of Henry F. Crawford. He was born (Henry) August 9, 1812, and died November 11, 1885, while she (Sarah) was born April 5th, 1842 and died in January, 1915. The paternal grandfather, a native of Virginia, moved to Ohio, and there he reared his family, and died. Henry F. Crawford left Ohio for southern Illinois, when he was eighteen years old, and located in Wayne County, where he was first married, and by that union had nine children, of whom two survive to date, namely: Reuben and Nancy, who is Mrs. Charles Burlingame, both live at Albion, Edwards Co. Illinois. By his second marriage Henry had seven sons, and four daughters, of whom three sons and daughters survive, namely : Ernest, who lives at Beaver Oklahoma, Jacob R. who lives in Montana, Olive, who is Mrs. William Swigelson, lives at Keokuk, Iowa, Sadie who is Mrs. Edward Moxley, lives in Boulder Colorado, Jennie who is Mrs. Moses Baum lives at Quincy, Ill. and John H. The maternal grandparents were natives of New York who came west to Michigan and inn 1853 , located to Hancock County, spending the remainder of their years there. Their names were John and Susan J. (Rogers) White. John Crawford began to be self supporting after his father's death, first as a farm hand and dairy helper, and later as a carpenter and wagon maker, working at his trades some years with contractors. He then was yard salesman in a lumber yard, and for four years was engaged in the dairy business, when in 1907 he opened his present popular restaurant at Hamilton, and has since been engaged in conducting it. On September 9, 1897, Mr. Crawford was married to Mrs. Florence A. Dennis, widow of Charles Edward Dennis and a daughter of William and Sarah S. (Irwin) Moore. By her first marriage she had a son Fredrick W. Dennis of Hamilton, who married Bertha Prouty, of Keokuk, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs.. Crawford have no children. Mr. Crawford is a Democrat and served as alderman of the old Third Ward of Hamilton 1892-1901. After Hamilton adopted the commission form of government, was city commissioner for two years, from 1913-1915. In 1912 he was elected a justice of the peace, and still holds that office. He belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he is a trustee and chairman of the official board. His fraternal affiliations are with the Hamilton Lodge No. 697. I.O.O.F. in which he has passed all the chairs. He compiled the first ordinance revision that was ever published in 18895, which remained in effect until 1913,, when the commission form of government was adopted. This action necessitated a vast amount of research of the records, and hunting for others that had been lost, and in this work and the ordinance revision of 1913. Mr. Crawford did signally valuable service as a member of the revision committee.

    3. Shawnee, How faded is your copy of the 1850 census for Hancock County, Illinois? I tried searching for my Truitt family in the 1850 census, Hancock County, on the microfilm copy at the LDS Family History Library here in Mesa, AZ. There were places where the handwriting faded out to practically nothing. It was very difficult to read. And even though I strongly suspect that my TRUITT family was living there as of 1850, I could not find them. If you ever come across the Truitts in 1850 Hancock County Census, it would be a dream come true. The family constellation would look something like this: --James Isaac TRUITT, father. --Elizabeth BOWEN TRUITT, mother, may be deceased before 1850, I'm not sure. --Henrietta TRUITT, about age 19 as of 1850. --James TRUITT, about age 17 as of 1850. --Emily TRUITT, about age 13, as of 1850. --possible other daughters may be named Jane TRUITT or Julia TRUITT. I know someone with the name Kimbro emailed the list for information a while back. I have not found Kimbro but lots of Kimbrough's. Most of them were from Kentucky. I have a very good memory and I see a lot of names that people are searching but I don't know what the rest of the family names are. Such as children and dates that you may have. The census records are full of information if you can make the right connections. Shawnnee

    3. Oral history from my grandmother, and others of her generation, has it that her grandmother's maiden name was Mary Sofronia DePue (or any spelling likely to generate that pronunciation), born 1842, married G. M. Trumper. We think Mary DePue was born in New York or Pennsylvania. They lived near Nauvoo,Illinois for a while before settling in Wayne County, Iowa. G. M. and Mary S. Trumper are buried in the New York Cemetary, Wayne County, Iowa. Their daughter Ida Mae married John Henry Reuter. They lived in Wayne County, Iowa, then moved to Brainard, Minnesota in the 1920's. We do not know Mary DePue's father's name, but her mother's maiden name was Sarah Martel (again, any reasonable spelling), b. in New Jersey or New York, died 1897. Looking for info on Trumper, DePue and Martel from Nauvoo area. I am looking forward to the census records being on-line, as they may have been in Hancock County around 1850 to 1860. ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

Gary Speck GTUSA@aol.com <<Unfortunately I don't know if any of my people are buried in Hancock Co. So far my only connection is an 1865 marriage. I have nothing in my BEATTY or WESTBROOK lines to tie the county to births/deaths or even residences. If any of you find any references to those two names in your county research I'd love to hear from you. I do belong to both the BEATTY and WESTBROOK Rootsweb groups, but my two folks seem to be orphans and appeared on this earth on Oct 17, 1865 when they were married. Neither of their death certs give any info other than dates/states of birth (George BEATY KY Aug 1838, and Caroline WESTBROOK VA Mar 1842). From their wedding in 1865 until sometime between 1877 and 1882 they lived in IL, but I haven't found where. They moved to Tingley, Ringgold Co., IA area before 1882, and I have them well documented from that point on. ANY help on their stay in IL and especially Hancock Co would be appreciated.
