Hi All: I am doing a Christmas program on early Mormon Pioneers and was wondering how wide the Mississippi is where the Saints crossed over from Missouri after the expulsion order. The crossings took place in 1838/1839 when they crossed over into Quincy, Illinois. Thanks, Donna in SO. CA
Dorothy, The term "minister of the gospel" is a generic term for an ordained or licensed minister. There would be no way to connect the term with any particular church/denomination. Is anyone looking for the Kelley/Kelly family from Carthage that included Elzie and Chesterfield, both victims of the influenza epidemic c.a. 1918-1920? If so, I have a couple of clippings about that family and a story to share. Debby McCoy (dmccoy2750@aol.com)
The "RAG" listed below is a private reseacher whose initials are RAG. It's actually a husband & wife team (I believe) and I have used them for info lookups. They are active on the ILCOOK-L list, and do lookups and mail copies for a minimal fee. Hope this helps. Hi, Bentley History from the book "Historic Sites and Structures of Hancock co, IL", 1979 --- no mention of a Burnette cemetery -- just a mention of A.B. Burnett Store (on Main street (hwy) between 1st and 2nd street), later became site of the A.L. Casburn Ford Agency, and then the W.H. Smith Ford and IHC Agency. Maybe the Burnett family has a family cemetery near the town of Bentley. Roberta, The Calvary Catholic Cemetery is located directly west of and adjoining Moss Ridge Cemetery, according to the book "Historic Sites and Structures of Hancock Co, Illinois, 1979". The Barnes Cemetery is located south of Moss Ridge Cemetery, and has not been used for several years. I accidentally deleted the wonderful reponse to the post that I made about this family. Please would the person who responded send it to me again. The ATen family is huge, all that I know of are descended from Adrian Aten ho came in 1651 to New Amsterdam. Lots of researchers involved with this family. Thanks, Sorry that the message got deleted. I am using WebMail and messages can't be retrieved once they are gone. Pat Thomas

Margaret Ann McCants Griffitts, 1836-1915 "Death of Mrs. Margaret Griffitts Mrs. Margaret Griffitts died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Blair in this city Sunday morning, after a long illness, aged 78 years, 9 months and 11 days. Margaret McCants was the daughter of William and Jane McCants who came here from Kentucky in an early day. She was born in Carthage, Nov. 6, 1836, and she has probably had the longest continual residence in this city of any citizen. She was one of a family of eight children--four boys and four girls; Samuel died in Colchester in 1908; William McCants died in Bloomfield, Ia., in 1902; Lee McCants, of Bloomfield who was unable to be here for the funeral; Edw. McCants died in Carthage in July, 1914; Sarah J. Ramsey, of Stillwater, Okla., unable to be here; Mrs. Mary Johns, died in Carthage over twenty years ago and Mrs. Angeline Woodburn of this city. She was married to Thos. B. Griffitts in 1869, and was a good mother to his six children, so much so that they never knew the loss of a mother's care and interest. Of these children four survive. Samuel of St. Louis; Stephen A. of Spokane; Mrs. Mina Roberts, of Isabelle, Kas., and Mrs. Adda Blair, who has given Mrs.Griffitts a daughter's love and devotion.Mr. Griffitts, who was one of the old settlers of this city, died Jan. 23 1911. Mrs. Griffitts became a member of the Presbyterian church at the age of 12, but because of her unstable health did not follow the activities of her church very closely. She led a very quiet, kindly life, and nought but good can be said of her. The funeral was held from the residence of Mrs. Blair yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J.W. Porter officiating. Interment at Moss Ridge." The Carthage Republican, August 11, 1915, pg. 8, col. 5. Join 18 million Eudora users by signing up for a free Eudora Web-Mail account at http://www.eudoramail.com

I am working on an Aten family and find Aaron Prince Aten married Emma S. Crawford in 1872 in Knox county. She is living with her widowed mother, Minerva Crawford in 1870 and also after her marriage in 1880 in Knox county. Just trying to tidy things up, I find a Harrison Crawford married to a Minerva Ann Stockton 25 December 1839 in Hancock county and wondered if this was Emma's mother. Emma has a sister Melissa who would have been born about 1842. They were in Indian Point township, no Crawford's listed in the cemetery listing. Does anyone know anything about this family?
