I concur with the comments on beautifuly Hancock Co. I visited there last fall on a genealogical trip, and parked our trailer in the Nauvoo RV park. We loved the quiet and the beautiful scenery. We were also treated royally by the volunteers at the Hancock Co. Historical Society, which I joined. My pioneer ancestors are: John Sr. and John Jr. Cochran, his wife Susan Gates, and John and Susan's siblings, including Susans brother, Benjamin Butler Gates. Other married ancestors include the Gordon, Steele, Pryor, Alvord, and possibly Higgins families. What fun I've had in tracking these folks down, and visiting their final resting place (mainly on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi - Riverside Cemetery. Gib Patterson pattersrg@cs.com

My gggggrandmother, Rebekah WAGGONER WILLIAMS is buried there, somewhere near the old village of Commerce, along a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Here's what I have in my notes. Does anyone have any more info? * * * Rebekah (WAGGONER) WILLIAMS died of sickness during the "Winter of the Deep Snow" in Nauvoo IL, April 3, 1833, and is buried on a bluff beside the Mississippi river (beside her 6 day old daughter, Julia Ann who died a few weeks earlier on March 19, 1833). Another daughter Phoebe, b 1825 in Warsaw IL, was said to be "One quarter Indian", as handed down by her grandson. Her discouraged and heartbroken husband Peter left their often-flooded Illinois farm (Commerce, now Nauvoo) soon afterwards with their remaining children, to farm just south of Fort Madison, Iowa and became good friends with Chief Blackhawk, often entertaining 3 of the Chief's children in his home. (Peter' and Rebekah's daughter, Elizabeth (WILLLIAMS) BOX, is my GGGGrandmother) Peter died in 1835 and is buried the the Farmington, Iowa graveyard on the bank of the Des Moines river.

Shawnee, I noticed the BOWEN surname among you list of surnames. One of the women on my line had the maiden name of BOWEN. Her given name may have been either Belinda, or Elizabeth. Marriage records for Ross County Ohio list her name as Belinda Bowen at the time of her marriage in 1827. Family Records which have been compiled by the late Eldon A. Farrens, of Idaho, indicate that her full given name was Elizabeth Ann BOWEN. She married James Isaac TRUITT. Belinda, or Elizabeth, BOWEN TRUITT died shortly after the birth of her 7th child. The time period for her death would have been roughly between 1840 and 1845. She is supposed to be buried in a Cemetery near Farmington, Fulton County, Illinois. I have been unable to find a death or cemetery record for her. By 1847 the TRUITT family had moved to Hancock County, Illinois. Two of the Truitt's daughters were married in Hancock County. Elizabeth Ann TRUITT married Henry Mortimer KELLOGG in Hancock County, in 1847. Mahala or Mahalia TRUITT married Jacob EMANUEL in Hancock County in 1849. If anyone has any further information regarding the above mentioned families, please contact me. I am so THRILLED to have ancestors who lived in Hancock County, because I think it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Hi All I thought this was Something you should all be aware of, in case you should have problems accessing Rootsweb pages when the New Year begins tomorrow night, Y2K - or in some cases earlier. Quote From Dr. Brian Leverich, Rootsweb: >RootsWeb believes it is fully ready for Y2K (modulo trivial problems). >HOWEVER, We believe there is some chance that parts or all of RootsWeb may >be temporarily unavailable because of difficulties elsewhere on The Net. >We will do everything in our power to work around any problems other sites >or backbone Net carriers have." > >Also please be aware that some systems who house USGW pages (non-Rootsweb) >are going to be turned off intentionally for the date rollover. How long >this will be for is anyone's guess. > >As of now the Indiana state page is down for unknown reasons but this may >be the case of working on the date rollover. If so, I'm sure that there >will be others.
I had the virus Party.exe attach itself to my computer (from where I don't know). If you receive an e-mail from me with this attachment DO NOT open it. I got rid of it but don't want someone else getting it from my machine. Please watch for these new viruses that are floating around. Most older virus scan programs do not catch them. Update your virus program today. T http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hodges I'm an angel are you? http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/6878/
Because of the various threats of viruses that might be out there other list owners are suggesting that activity stop until around the 2nd or 3rd of January. I am not saying you must but it might be a wise idea. There are a couple of viruses that are going around that appear to come through Rootsweb mailing lists. They are not coming through the list but are masquerading themselves. I would hate for anyone to lose valuable information due to a virus. Thanks in advance and have a Merry Christmas and Happy 2000. Dear Fellow Searchers, I am interested in identifying the Catholic Church in Warsaw IL between the years 1870 and 1881. I am assuming there was just one. I am looking for a baptismal record from the year 1871 for Emily McDermott, the daughter of Brigid Deegan and Patrick McDermott. Is there a listing of Churches and pastors for this time frame available? I have the name of the priest who performed Emily's older sibling's wedding in 1881 but I cannot decipher it without a few clues. Thanks in advance for your help. Ginny
