    3. Hi, I have a ancestors buried in the McKay Cemetery. Usually drop by every Memorial Day. It is in Section 28, Pilot Grove Township. Directions are one and one-half miles south of Burnside, three-quarters of a mile east, north side of road. Well taken care of but lacking in burial records. Sexton does not have any info on unmarked graves, except for recent burials. My ancestors were buried 1915-1930 era in unmarked graves, location unknown. There are a lot of stones from that era or earlier, some fallen and broken and others difficult to read. I have not found any published cemetery index for McKay Cemetery. Chet Neff, Champaign, IL

    3. Hi All, I can not help but put my 2 cents in. I was raised in Hamilton. My grandparents, Mildred and Lillard ( Doc) had a resteraunt between Hamilton and Nauvoo, called the Mississippi Bar- B- Q. My Grandma ran the resteraunt and my grandpa was a Barber in Hamilton. Before they moved to Hamilton, they lived in Nauvoo when my mother Alice Pilcher, was a girl. At that time Grandma made clothes for the wealthy people of town and grandpa was a Band Leader, and tutored privately. They also ran the Mississippi Youth Center, along the Mississippi river, where a lot of the young people from the area hung out. I was raised on the river swimming in the summer and iceskating in the winter. To this day I could sit and let all my troubles drift on down the river. I still long to go back to where I grew up. It was a little bit of heaven on earth The country is beautiful, simple and layed back. Nauvoo has a Grape Festival every year. I bet you won't find a better grape anywhere. They used to have a carnival and it went for a whole week. We had band concerts in the summer on Saturday night. The towns people would block off the street and everyone went to town all dressed up for the band concert. It was a big thing back then. No one really had much money but this was something that did not cost any money. Some of us High school age kids used to stop, at the local drug store after school and for a dime, we could get a Vanilla Phosfate, or a Cherry Coke. Now I drink a cream soda and it is almost the same but not quite. Our church went to Carthage to the Rollerskating rink. We all loved to go rollerskating. I used to love to go to the games when we got to go to Carthage. When we wanted to go to the Drive In Movies we went to Keokuk. We made it a habit to go to the A&W Rootbeer stand before we went ot the movies, so we would not want anything at the movie stand. It just seems so long ago now and so many things have changed. They even have a golf course in Hamilton now. I am not a writer but I hope you all can understand what I ment to say Shawnnee

I agree with all the folks who have written to say that Hancock County and the surrounding areas are in a lovely, green and flowing, fertile area of the country. No wonder some of those pioneers chose to end their western treks and put down roots there. Some of my earliest memories swirl around Fountain Green, where my Pogue Grandparents farmed for over 50 years and where the little Majorville country church abuts the farm they owned: several generations of my family are buried there - on both my mother's and father's side of the family; the doves coo gently over them, in sympathetic mourning of lives well-lived, or not, in some cases. (And where they used to hold ice cream socials and sometimes were pelted with an offering from blackbirds that had visited the mulberry tree nearby - oh, my!) Where several generations of my grandfather McGee's family lived. With Webster, where Grandpa used to give us grandkids a dime and tell us "don't spend it a! ll in one place", when we went to the store there. With the Joetta area, where my ggg-aunt Lil Beckwith Weakley ran a General Store for over 40 years, keeping the Beckwith family under a protective wing and steely-eyed gaze, and where gg-grandfather Ben Barb had a smithy. With Crooked Creek, where we used to go wading and hunting for crawdads; years before that, Hancock County residents could catch a fine supper of catfish in that creek. I could go on for a long time, as I can document my family being there as early as 1836. With their large families, they intermarried (with so many of the surnames I see in the correspondence on the mailing list) and thrived. I had been thinking about putting together a family history calendar for my family and it dawned on me that this might be an interesting and fun project for all of us. And, by golly, we might very well find some new genealogy leads and contacts. Whether or not the Hancock website folks would have room to permanently display the calendar we could build, I don't know. We'll have to let Terasa and Shawnee answer that question. But we could start by sending information in with the subject line: ON JAN 5, YYYY, IN HANCOCK COUNTY. We could enter things like land purchases, marriages, birthdays, funerals, church and school dedications, colorful or historical neighborhood events … you get the idea. There's not much new under the sun, but I haven't seen anything like this on other area websites - maybe this idea would spread. So Terasa and Shawnee, do you think this would fly?

    3. I too must confess, the things everyone says about the Mississippi shoreline is so impressive. And very much so at Nauvoo and surrounding areas! Possibly why alot of cemeteries were placed there, even in early indian cultures. Keep in mind that the Mississippi river also can put one in a peaceful trancelike state. So much water and so eternal. Also, the land is very fertile. Once there, one would wish to live there. >From: Pattersrg@cs.com >To: ILHANCOC-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [ILHANCOC] Roll Call >Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 23:39:11 EST > >I concur with the comments on beautifuly Hancock Co.
