    2. George W. OWENS married Mary CHRISTIAN in Hancock County, illinois, on June 12, 1860. Leathy OWENS daughter of George married John W. STANLEY in Hancock, County, illinois on August 15, 1874 Leathy died as wife of Fred Fischer in Toledo, Ohio in Jan. 1910. I believe this lady to be my grandmother. My father was Wiliam Fisher b Feb 1, 1902. I cannot place my father with the parents listed above, all I have that is fact on him is that on his SS application (dated 1937) is that is parents were Fred Fisher and Leathy of Toledo, Ohio. The 1900 census gave Leathy's date of birth and state of illinois. Her death certificate gave her parents names as George W. Owen and Mary Christian. What happened to Leathy's marriage to John W. Stanley? How can I find out if Leathy is my Dad's mother? 20 years of researching and nothing. Can anyone help with suggestions? Anything would help. Thank you Marian

    2. Hi Everyone, It has been a long time since I have seen a post from this list so I hope I am still on it. Decided to send a query and see what happens. I am looking for the grave of Verlinda Bell Williams and it might be around the Durham area. We think she died sometime in the 1860. Verlinda married Issac Williams on Feb. 14, 1850 in Mason County, Illinois. By 1870 Isaac was back in Mason County without Verlinda. She may have also been called Malinda. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks. Roberta Summers.

I found your address on the Hancock County GenWeb site and hope you can help me. I recently discovered a photo of a WW I soldier from your area while going through some of my grandfather's pictures and would like to see it returned, if not to his family, then at least to the part of the country he called home. It's a small, studio portrait of a young American soldier identified on the back as "Peter Boernson" of Warsaw, Illinois. He was, apparently, a friend of my grandfather and, most likely, served with him in the 89th or 59th Divisions in France, circa 1917/1918. The picture was taken in France at about that time. Contact me if you can help. I'll be glad to mail it. Martin Boyd

There was a German Lutheran Church in Warsaw as well, exact name eludes me at present (Concordia?)--but my ancestors attended there in the late 1800s. The present Lutheran Church in Carthage was originally a "German" congregation as well and included many Carthage College faculty among its early members. I think it was originally named Trinity English Evagelical Church but would not swear to it (I think that's what's written in the stained glass above one of the doors). So technically it might not qualify as "German" based upon its name, but many members were of German extraction. I attended this church as a child. There was another Lutheran church in Carthage, the Zion Lutheran Church. The services of this congregation were in German; the church disbanded ca. 1921 and the members mostly joined the Trinity Lutheran Church. The former building is now the Veterans of Foreign War hall (across from the present "dime store"--the old "super value"). My Habben and Fecht families attended this church. There was a "German" Lutheran congregation in Tioga, in the southern part of the county. It is now affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The vast majority of the early members were German. My paternal grandmother was baptized in this church and her family attended it from 1853? until 1920 or so. There was another German congretation near Sutter and I'm not certain if it started out Lutheran or not. It is now Sutter Salem church (speaking from memory on this one). None of my ancestors attended this church. There was ANOTHER German Lutheran Congregation near Bentley. Members of this church were German, predominantly Ostfriesen in origin. It was founded in the 1870s or so. My great-great-grandfather was on the board and several of my ancestors attended this church also and I have six ancestors buried in the church cemetery. Hope this helps. Michael Neill whose Irish surname hides the fact that he is 5/8th "German"

Tracy, According to Thomas Gregg's "History of Hancock County" (published in 1880) there was a German Lutheran Church in Nauvoo. There isn't much in his book about that church. Here's the full quotation from page 959: "There are four Church organizations in the city--all in possession of handsome and substantial church edifices. Of the most of them we know but little. The Catholic has for its pastor Rev. H. T. Reinhold, who has served for several years. The German Lutheran, with Rev. Hertel for Pastor."
