Cravens, in the 49th year of his age of Bright's disease. Mr. Cravens had resided where he died since 1841, coming to this state with his parents at that date. He was the second son of the late Joseph Cravens, of Carthage township, who died in 1871. Has been for many years a prominent farmer and stock dealer, well and favorably known for strict integrity and square dealing. His funeral was largely attended at the brick church, in Carthage township, on the 25th inst. The funeral was preached by his old school mate and life-long friend, Dr. Booz, of this township. He leaves a widow and three children. The cheerful face of our dead friend will be seen no more; his faults lie buried; his many kindly acts will live forever. Few men indeed were so willing and ready to respond to the cry of distress. His aged mother, nearing 90 years, still resides upon the old homestead in Carthage township. The Lord sustain the sorrowing friends! COUNTRY JAKE. - ---------------------------------------------------- wife: Harriet children: Mary, Francina, and George. A terrible and fatal accident occurred to a son of Mr. Joseph Cravens, residing about five miles east of this city, on Monday morning last. The lad's name is Charles; his age about ten or twelve years. The hour was quite early, and the lad was still in bed when one of his brothers entered the room to awaken him. He partially raised up in bed, when the brother going out, his foot accidentally struck a loaded rifle standing in a corner near the door, causing it to fall with the muzzle across the bed-rail, and striking the lock against the floor discharging the rifle. The ball entered Charles' body at the back, near the spine, coming out near the naval, and of course penetrating through several folds of the bowel. Surgical aid was summoned at once, but was of no avail beyond mitigating the poor boy's sufferings. He died the same evening. - -------------------------------------------------- Note: Charles was buried in the Old Brick Church Cemetery. P. Cannon. Passed away at her home, No. 214 North Scofield St., Jan. 19, 1917. Mrs. Amerial Elizabeth Cannon, aged 86 years, 10 months and 1 day. Amerial E. Boston, the daughter of George and Mahala Boston, was born in Kentucky, March 18, 1830, and at the age of six years came to this county with her parents, where she lived the remainder of her life, except two years spent in California. On Oct. 24, 1849, she was married to Alburn Perry Cannon, who died Jan. 28, 1905. To this union were born four children, Dr. Willis Cannon now of San Diego, Calif.; Granvel Cannon of this city; Mrs. Marrila Thackston, who has been the mother's devoted companion and nurse, and Jenny, the beloved daughter whose death so desolated the home, May 24, 1888. She is also survived by a sister, Miss Nancy Boston of this city. In 1851, Mr. and Mrs. Cannon spent two years in California, where Granvel was born, but returned to this county to continue their residence here to the end of their days. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Primitive Baptist church when she lived in the country, but did not affiliate with any church in Carthage. She was a quiet home body, devoted to her family, and little given to going about. But in her quiet, unobtrusive way, she was after all the dominant figure in the home which has so long been blessed by her presence and which now will pass through marked change by her death. The funeral was held at the residence Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. M. Jones officiating. Interment in Moss Ridge. The deceased was born in South Carolina, not far from the North Carolina line in the year 1800. He became a resident of Morgan county, Ill., as early as 1822, removing to Hancock county ten years later, where he has since resided. In the early history of this county, Mr. Cannon was entrusted with numerous official positions from justice of the peace to county collector. He held the latter office two years with great acceptability. He was a justice of the peace for many years, and was considered a well-informed and impartial officer. In his private relatives, Mr. Cannon was always held in the highest esteem as a citizen and neighbor. His dealings were always conducted upon the strictest principles of fairness and honor. We believe this is the general verdict of public opinion concerning the deceased. Mr. Cannon leaves a large circle of relations, who are among our most respected citizens, to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday — the corpse being deposited in the cemetery at the Baptist brick church, 5 miles east of this city. ------------------- wife: Mary Grove children: Robert, William, Cornelius, Elam, and Bolivar Link: Bryant Genealogy URL: <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bryant>

Boston Succumbs After Long Illness Quietly and peacefully as she had lived, the spirit of Mrs. Chas. W. Boston took its flight to enter into Life Eternal with the Saviour whom she loved, and the dear ones who had gone on before. On the last day of the old year, Wednesday, December 31, 1941, as the sun was setting, she closed here eyes to open them in Paradise. Mary Rowena Yetter, daughter of William and Mary Long Yetter was born at the family home near Webster, Illinois, August 22, 1864. Her father was a soldier in the Civil War. She received her education in the rural school near her home. On June 26, 1884, she was married to Charles Walker Boston, a prosperous young farmer, and they went to housekeeping on the old Boston homestead five miles southeast of Carthage, where they spent the remainder of their lives. To this union seven children were born, Ava May, wife of Dave Kimbrough, passed away September 2, 1906. Charles Gaylord, Goldie, wife Olof Dickinson, Lula, wife of Don White and Ernest David all living near the old home and Fern, wife of Lester Frazee of Keokuk, Iowa. Myrna, the youngest child, passed away December 15, 1928. On August 22, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Boston celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. This was a very happy occasion for a couple which had been very happy together for fifty years. On June 30, 1936, Mr. Boston passed away, and Mrs. Boston never recovered from her grief at this parting. The daughter Goldie, and family moved to the mothers home to care for her and have been her devoted companions. Besides her children and their families Mrs. Boston is survived by one sister, Kathryn, widow of Dan Dunsworth, and one brother, Eugene L. Yetter. A sister, Hortense, wife of Wm. Dye, and a sister, Susie, wife of Sylvester Boston, two brothers, William and David, preceded her in death; also an infant brother, Louis, and sister, Etta. Her parents entered the better world many years ago. The following grandchildren survive: Ruth Boston Hardesty of Chicago; Wayne Boston, of Carthage; Raymond White, of California; Leola White Shelor, of Plymouth; Glen Dickinson, in army service at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey; Robert Frazee, of Keokuk, Iowa; Marjorie Boston Dickinson, Norma and Geraldine Boston, Carthage. The great grandchildren are Jimmy David and Joyce Hardesty, Gary and Judith White, Wayne and Sharon Shelor, and Judith Marie Dickinson. For years Sunday school services were held at East Union schoolhouse, near the Boston home, and it was there that the family attended. Later during church service there, Mr. and Mrs. Boston were converted, and became members of the Carthage Baptist church, always living true to its teachings. Mrs. Boston was an unusual woman — a Christian woman in all that the word implies. Free from criticism of others, she lived her life in her own quiet, helpful way, an example to all about her. Little she realized what an influence her life had on so many people, her family, friends, and community. People felt that a visit with her brought out the best within them, and left a benediction upon their lives. Her home-life was ideal. Never a more devoted wife and mother. This affection was returned by all the children and the homecomings of them and their families were the mother's greatest joy. Mrs. Boston was a member of the Friday Country Club in her own community, and was always interested in everything for the betterment of the community. She was a faithful member of her church, a loyal friend, and is real neighbor. The following poem tells the story of her life: In Her Remembrance They say that she whom we have/ . loved is dead, But in our hearts she lives, and we, Who miss her kindly face and gentle/ . voice. May know her still in memory. The dearest spot on earth to her was/ . home; Her husband first, then children dear; Her household aids gave service will-/ . ingly And knew her word of praise sincere. Within her church she found a second/ . home, And in her one accustomed place Through long, long years she offered/ . up her prayers, With loved ones, on the throne of/ . grace. A woman of the type the psalmist/ . loved, Within her world she led the way With stateliness and gracious, gentle/ . pride. And when she spoke none said her/ . nay. And one who loved her knew her/ . kindly heart. That felt before 'twas told the need, With kindly pretense making it/ . appear Her pleasure in the loving deed. Then who shall say that she we loved/ . is dead? Link: Bryant Genealogy URL: <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bryant>

BERRY. John C. Berry, son of Reece and Polly Atkins Berry, was born near Fountain Green, Ill., on Nov. 24, 1856, and passed away at his home in Carthage, Ill., April 21, 1931, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 27 days after a brief illness of pneumonia. The days of his early childhood were spent in Hancock county, the family moving to Missouri when he was just a young man. In the year 1907 he returned to Illinois, where he has since made his home. His immediate family, consisting of parents, one brother, William Berry, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Smith and Mrs. Edith Villers, preceded him in death many years ago, and he has made his home with friends and kinfolk for the last twenty years. He greatly appreciated all they did for him and was respected by all of them. Being raised by Christian parents in the Baptist faith, he was a firm believer in all that was right and just. Uncle John, as he was known to all his acquaintances, had many friends as his kindness to others was remarkable. In his private life and dealings with his fellowmen he was strictly honest, holding his word in the highest honor. Always trying to follow the golden rule, he was beautifully child-like in his honesty and sincerity, ever guided by the truth, "it is more blessed to give than to receive." Mrs. Frank Gamage, of Plymouth, is a niece of Mr. Berry. "He shall sleep, but not forever, In the lone and silent grave, Blessed be the Lord that taketh, Blessed be the Lord that gave." Funeral services were conducted from the Hearne funeral home April 23rd, at 2:00 p.m., by Elder Claud E. Webb, of Bentley. The body was laid in the old brick cemetery. In early life she gave her heart to Christ and united with the Methodist church and later on coming into closer contact with the Christian church, some eight years ago, she identified herself with the body, thus cherishing growing and constant faith until that faith was changed to sight. "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life." Besides the five surviving children there are thirty-one grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren who together with many distant relatives and many friends remain to sustain this loss. AUSTIN. F. S. Austin, Sr., died at his home in this city Saturday, March 17, 1900, at 11 a.m., aged nearly 77 years. The funeral was held from the family residence Tuesday, March 20, at 2 p.m., Rev. G. C. Shaffer, officiating. Burial at Moss Ridge. ----------------------- The Carthage Republican Carthage, Illinois Wednesday March 28, 1900 Page 5 Column 5 Obituary. Francis Sumner Austin was born October 16, 1824, in Adison county, Vermont; died at his home in this city March 17, 1900 at 11: 30 a.m. When quite young his parents moved to Bartholomew county, Ind., where he was reared to manhood. About the year 1848 he married Phoebe Mapes; came to Hancock county in 1852, spent a short time in Ft. Green township, then bought a farm in East Carthage upon which he located. He first bought one quarter section, a few years later another quarter, making him a very fine farm of 320 acres which he improved; substantial fencing, fine house and barn, in fact, every convenience for successful gain and stock-raising. For many years Mr. Austin was the most extensive dealer in cattle and hogs in Eastern Hancock county. He was known everywhere as a fair, honest trader, always willing to pay the market value of anything offered him in his line. An indefatigable worker; mount his horse in blinding storms of winter, buy and gather in stock, plunge into snow drifts, wade the deep mud, brave any weather, to push forward his business. Cash down was his rule when buying; if otherwise, his word was as good as his note; no quibbling no whining, or complaining if things occasionally were against him. He was a firm and valued friend of the writer; his family physician for nearly forty years, uninterrupted; business transactions time and again, in stock and other matters; knew him long and well. His home was thrown open to his friends; social gatherings frequent; no man exceeded him in his efforts to render all such occasions enjoyable; old and young, high and low received a hearty welcome. A kind husband, devoted father, accommodating neighbor, good citizen, has ceased from labor; released from pain and sorrow, has fallen asleep. Beyond the dark river, sees the “shining shore,” the eternal city -- the home eternal of the redeemed of the Lord -- in it will dwell a countless host in spotless white, to praise forever God and the Lamb. Dear old, true and tried friend, farewell. WM. BOOZ, M. D. The funeral of Mr. Austin took place from the residence Tuesday, March 20, at 2 p.m., and was conducted by Dr. William Booz in accord with a wish expressed many years ago by deceased. Rev. G. C. Shaffer and Rev. F. L. Tower assisted. The body was placed in the vault at Moss Ridge cemetery. Link: Bryant Genealogy URL: <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bryant>
