He helped organize the first Sunday school here and was a leader in the temperance movement. (Correction to article: it is James A. Davis not A.J. Davis; his wife who preceded him in death was Mary Ann Tyler Davis.)

Died, this morning, Mrs. Mary A. DAVIS, of paralysis, aged 67 years. Mrs.DAVIS and her husband came from Ohio to this county in 1846 and located on the farm that she died on. Her maiden name was TYLER. There were twelve brothers and sisters of them; three of whom are living; Mrs. PRUETT, of Carthage, being one of the number. The deceased was the mother of ten children, four of whom are living, two sons and two daughters. These and an aged husband mourn her immediate loss, and besides these a whole community. Grandma Davis was an old settler in this part of the county. Many newcomers of other days shared her hospitalities. Her house was the home of the itinerant and the only place of worship many years ago. Her christian integrity approached perfection. Mrs. Davis has been in poor health for some time. She made all the necessary arrangements for her burial and then gave instructions regarding the funeral services, requesting that there be no unnecessary ceremonies. The funeral sermon was preached to a large congregation at the old home by Rev. Kidd, after which a large procession followed the remains to its last resting place in Moss Ridge cemetary. it is a long farewell to Mother Davis, but not without pleasant recollection of the past. (Additional info not contained explicitly in Obituary: Jackson Co., Ohio her place of her birth; Henry Davis, her husband; surviving children: James A. Davis of Ferris, Eliz Jane "Jennie" Gannon of Ferris, Elizabeth Jackson of Flagler,Calif, and Edward Davis of McCall, Ill.)

Il Obituaries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits?read=262 Surname: Doud, Campbell, Hartford, Sumerville, Richardson, Davis, Nisley, Booth, Nisley ------------------------- Hancock County News, 7/29/1891, Ferris, Hancock County, Illinois Died in this place, of dysentery, July 29, 1891, Rev. Fayette DOUD, aged 62 years, 10 months and 12 days. Deceased was born in Ohio. When a boy he moved with his father's family to Grundy County, Ill. He was raised on the farm and was given a liberal education. When about 23 years of age he joined the Methodist Protestant Church, and became an itinerant minister, and during the last 40 years has served with distinction in this connection. Nineteen years ago he was called to serve this people. He served them two years and then accepted a call to Maroa, this state, staying one year. During that year a bronchial trouble that had annoyed him considerably in the past, developed itself so that he was unable to continue in the ministery. On this account he came back here and purchased a farm, removing here the same year, and has been one of our noblest citizens ever since. For honesty and integrity no man stood higher. In 1875 he engaged in the mercantile business with Harrison W. CAMPBELL. But later on he determined to quit this business. He sold out and soon after went into the grain business, and thus continued until his death, having quite a large amount to store at the time. During his stay with this people he has served them with distinction, filling every position to the letter. Not a public enterprise has failed to receive his heartiest endorsement, both with money and time. Thus a useful life has been spent. As a christian gentleman none had higher attainments. He realized and mentioned when his life's work was done. And farther on when telling the family what disposition to make of the business he told them that he was ready for the change, and that all was well in the beyond. He then calmly laid himself down and in a short time was unconscious of the doings of this world. Nearly 50 buggies and carriages followed the remains to its last resting place in Moss Ridge Cemetary. Rev. Strong, of LaHarpe, conducted the services, assisted by Revs. Anthony and Ward. Mr. Doud was twice married; first in 1850, to Miss Sarah E. HARTFORD. To this union seven children were born, three of whom are still living, as follows: Mrs. Ellen SUMERVILLE, of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. RICHARDSON and MRS. DAVIS, of this place. Second, in 1863 to Miss Eliza J. NISLEY. To this union there were nine children, seven of whom are still living, as follows: Mattie, Herman, Charles, Robert, Edward, Lee and Winnie. A wife, ten children, two brothers and one sister, Mrs. BOOTH, are the immediate mourners. Israel DOUD of Eldora, Iowa, Davis DOUD of Gardner, Ill., and Mrs. Chloe BOOTH of Morris, Ill., were in attendance at the funeral. Additional notice appearing in the same newspaper: ...Two elections are on tapis, caused by the death of Rev. Doud. One for village trustee and one school director.

M. Church on last Wednesday. Rev. Buckner, of Macomb, preached an interesting discourse, based upon the Universal doctrine. Mrs. Beckwith clung to that faith, and it was by her request that it was done. Mrs. Beckwith formerly lived in this city, and was known as a lady of much refinement and intelligence. Kind and loving to all around, made her beloved by all who knew her. The remains were interred in Wildwood cemetery, north of town, by the side of her children. We've no doubt a suitable obituary will be prepared by the Joetta correspondent, hence our brevity. * * * * * A search has revealed no additional obituary by the Joetta correspondent mentioned above. I have several obituaries which refer to the Webster Cemetery as the "Wildwood cemetery". Link: Deep Roots in Hancock County, Illinois URL: <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~majorville/>

Her death, like her life, was peaceful and she exhibited the patience and resignation which governed her whole life, until the very last. Her greatest charm was her evenness of temper, her willingness to oblige, and the kindly thoughts for those around her. She cultivated the faculty of saying something good of everybody. Millicent Beckwith was born in Shenango County Co., N.Y., Aug. 17, 1814. Died Jan. 6 '93, aged 78 years, 4 months and [illegible] days. She was married to Lloyd Robinson July 10th, 1831. Twelve children were born to them, four of whom, Marion, Finis, and Mrs. Jno. Wright, of this place and Nineus, of Yuba City, California, with the aged husband, and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss. The saddest part is the dear old man who is now left to spend the rest of his life alone. For over sixty years they have battled with life together. They, who have shared the honor of being the "oldest couple in Hancock Co.," are now divided. She, just gone over death's narrow stream, is waiting the coming of him who is on the brink of eternity, anxiously awaiting his summon. For more than 50 years have they lived in this community; and though she, who is now no more, has been a sufferer for many years, with a consumptive cough, no ever heard a word of complaint. Grandma Robinson was a favorite with all who knew her. The funeral took place at the church on Sunday at 11 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Roe, of Burnside, who preached an eloquent sermon from Hebrews 13:14, after which the remains, which were clothed in a lovely robe of cram colored satin and crepe, placed in a beautiful casket bearing the inscription "At Rest", were followed by a large concourse of people to the Wildwood cemetery, where the remains were laid to await the coming of the Lord. Dearest mother thou has left us Here thy loss we deeply feel; But 'tis God that hath bereft us He can all our sorrows heal. * * * * * I have seen her name spelled both Millicent and Milicent, and Loyd and Lloyd for her husband. Her birth place was Chenango County, New York. I have seen several obituaries in which the Webster Cemetery has been called the Wildwood Cemetery. McCracken and Sarah J. Williams? They were married March 6, 1866 in Hancock County and Sarah might have been married first to Andrew Williams from Mason County Illinois. Could sure use some help with this family and willing to share what little I have. Also Sarah may have brought a daughter Nancy with her to this marriage. Thanks. Roberta.
Hi Everyone, Hope all of you had a good holiday and ready for another work week. Today I am looking for information on Sarah J. Williams who married Benjamin F. McCracken March 6, 1866 in Hancock County. I believe that Sarah J. Williams was first married to Andrew Williams from Mason County and after his death in 1861 she came back to Hancock County and maybe married Benjamin F. McCracken. I believe she also had a daughter, Nancy Williams with her when she moved back to Hancock County. Does anyone have any information on this Sarah and Benjamin? Thanks. Roberta Summers.

Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=992 Surname: Davis, tyler, Putt ------------------------- It has been brought to my attention that I have a misnomer in my previous posting. Timothy Tyler was born in New Jersey and resided in Jackson Co., OHIO. He then came to Hancock County in 1847. In Jackson Co., Ohio he and Henry Davis together with William Davis (either the father or brother of Henry) resided together as: Jackson County #002 Jackson Township. His age at the time of the 1850 Hancock County census would put him as being born in 1797 whereas Mary Ann Tyler (wife of Henry Davis) was born in 1819 - I have therefore assumed that he is Mary's father but could be her Uncle. Any information regarding Mr. Tyler or the others in my posting is appreciated.

Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=991 Surname: Davis, Tyler, Putt ------------------------- The following is not the information you have specifically requested, but may be of help in your research. This is an extract from T.H. Gregg's "History of Hancock Co., IL" printed in 1880, p 772-775 (p.773 is a photo and p.774 is blank). "Henry Davis was born in Bedford county, Pa., Dec. 9, 1815, and is a son of William and Maria (Putt) Davis (deceased), also natives of the same county. Mr Davis was reared on a farm, and at the age of 18 he removed with his parents to Zanesville, Ohio, where he engaged as pilot on a steamer between Zanesville and Dresden, for three years. He then went to Jackson county, Ohio, where he operated a steam grist and saw mill for about five years. He then, in 1846 came to this county and settled in Praire tp., where he still resides, and is engaged in farming and stock-raising. He was married in 1840 to Miss Mary Ann Tyler, by whom he has had 8 children; of these, 4 are living; vis., Jane, James A., Maria E. and Richard Edwin......" The rest of the article discusses James A.'s Civil War service. If the above is correct, your Timothy Tyler did not come to Hancock Co with his daughter and son-in-law from Jackson Co. NJ in 1847, as you imply, but rather came from Jackson Co. OH in 1846. Also, instead of looking for an Edward R. Davis, perhaps you should be looking for a Richard Edwin Davis! I am not researching these families, but only passing on information contained in the Hancock Co History.
