Hi Mary Jane, (I am copying this to the Schuyler Co list too) I visited this Thompson Cemetery just after heavy rains (big mistake). On an impromptu trip through rural Ilinois one year, we passed thru Schuyler county and the Genealogy Society and Jail Museum in downtown Rushville. We had no plans to do this.....we just wanted to see the country of my ancestors before driving back to Missouri. By total accident I saw this sign as we drove by. While my husband waited outside, the friendly folks inside showed me a listing of a few cemeteries in the area ------ within minutes I found my BOX relatives in THOMPSON cemetery. At that point they showed me a listing of graves at this cemetery. They also told me details and directions how to find this cemetery. Great bunch of people! I followed Highway 101 just a few miles west of Littleton, the town. There was a farmhouse on the left and a dirt road (cant remember the name right now) I headed about 1/2 mile south on the dirt road and came to "Thompson Cemetery Lane" , which is not much more than a path between cornfields now. This dirt road has no sign, but I could see a clump of trees at the end of it (east), about 1/4 mile, with a few dots (headstones) on the ground. On an old township map, I show the landowners on the south side of hwy 101 were Samuel M. THOMPSON estate, C W WALKER, William SNYDER, William C. THOMPSON. The north side Jas WINTER, Jno WALKER .....and J & J S WALKER (looks like a church was located near this property, on the Teel NELSON land) Land near the Thompson cemetery was owned by William C. THOMPSON, Saml M. THOMPSON Est., and W T CRAWFORD. South of CRAWFORD was land owned by Jas. WINTERS Est. The heavy rains made it impossible to take the muddy cemetery lane by car, so I walked the 1/4 mile in ankle deep clay/mud! What a work-out! And ruined my shoes too. I tried to follow the grid, but was unable to find the grave of my ancestors there. :( But a few years later, I met a cousin online who mailed me this old property map and photos of the stone she took 5 years ago -- it is a tall one -- dont know how I missed it. She said she and her husband repaired the stone at one time, since it had been broken in half. (They were able to drive all the way to the cemetery, as the lane was dry then) Somewhere I have a handful of photos of other stones from there, and will upload them (When I find them) to the Headstone hunters and Schuyler county websites.... I didnt go to the NEIDY cemetery, but from the map it looked like it was about 2 miles further SW. (Elizabeth Williams BOX was sister to Phoebe Williams NEIDY) If you have any questions, let me know! Hi there~ Just curious if anyone on this list has ancestors buried in the Thompson cemetery a few miles west of Littleton? (Or in the Neidy Cemetery not far from it) My gggrandparents are there (John and Eliz BOX) as well as some distant relatives. Some names I recall off the top of my head are: WEAVER, WILLIAMS, WYCOFF, BOX. My ancestors died in 1901 and 1902, but I did notice some graves as recent as 1922. One item I recall vividly was one marble stone that must have had two saplings planted on each side of it. Over the years, these saplings grew into gigantic trees...squishing and embedding part of the stone between the two large trunks. I was unable to get around those trees to see who's name was on the stone, because the brush in front of the stone had grown too thick, and I was weary of snakes. (I was alone out there and was 1/4 mile from any dirt road. Someday I'll go back and see.... Valerie
Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1100 Surname: Bagby ------------------------- Mary: Thank you for your response. The William Bagby's you refer to in your response are father and son. The William Bagby (I do not know a middle initial) you show as being born in 1816 and dying in 1908 is the father. He was born October 11, 1816 in Lewis County, Kentucky, and died June 15, 1908 in Augusta, Hancock County. He came to Adams County, Illinois from Kentucky in 1838 to visit his sister, Frances Bagby who had married William H. Bilderback on October 12, 1829 in Lewis County, Kentucky and removed to Adams County, Illinois. While visiting, he met Eliza Waring and in the same year on November 23, 1838, they were married in Adams County. As I noted in my query, William and Eliza Waring Bagby moved to Hancock County in 1854, before the Civil War as your August Story notes. The William Wallace Bagby shown in the Roll of Honor of Civil War Soldiers who Enlisted From Augusta Twp. is the third child of William and Eliza Waring Bagby. He is buried at the Pulaski Cemetery along with his wife, Mary M.Johnson Bagby, and two of his children who died young, Ethel Bagby and Morris Bagby. The children are buried in Lot 12, Range B, Wm. Wallace and Mary M. Johnson Bagby are buried in Lot 12, Range B. Also buried in Lot 12, Range B is his brother, John C. Bagby. Wm. Wallace Bagby suffered from extreme exposure during the Civil War and never fully recovered. He eventually died as a result of the exposure. There is a foot stone marker on his grave that reads Wallace Bagby, Sgt. Co. A 137 Rgt Ill Inf, Civil War. William Bagby and his wife Eliza Waring Bagby are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois. Dan Dunham
Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1098 Surname: ------------------------- Unfortunately I find no reference to the Augusta Tavern or the Commercial Hotel in our local history books. However, the Bagby name does appear! According to the Augusta Story William W. Bagby was a citizen of Augusta previous to the Civil War, being born in 1816 and dying in 1908. It does not list his state of birth or when he came to the twp. In the Roll of Honor of Civil War Soldiers who Enlisted From Augusta Twp. (same book) it again lists Wm. Wallace Bagby as being in the 7th Ill. Art. I am somewhat confused in the references to burials at the Pulaski Cemetery whether Mr. Bagby is among those having their final resting place there or if the reference simply includes him again as one who was a Civil War vet. from this twp. Pulaski was once a thriving town but when the railroad went through just "up the road", the population went to the railroad and made Augusta the larger of the two towns. Pulaski is mostly a cemetery and an intersection today. I hope you have put your inquiry on Adams Co.,as well, since Augusta is within 2 miles of the Adams County line and you may find information there.
Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1096 Surname: Bagby, Waring ------------------------- Looking for information, details, photographs, etc., regarding the AUGUSTA TAVERN located in the vicinity of Augusta, Hancock County, Illinois. The AUGUSTA TAVERN may also have been known as or associated with the COMMERCIAL HOTEL various family records and old newspaper clippings make reference to both names. William Bagby and his wife Eliza Waring Bagby operated the AUGUSTA TAVERN for about 29 years although the exact dates of operation by them are not positively documented. They moved from North East Township in Adams County, Illinois to Augusta, Hancock County, Illinois, in 1854 where they with their family began operation of the AUGUSTA TAVERN (or COMMERCIAL HOTEL). The last three of their nine children (Charles Fredrick Bagby, Basil Augustus Bagby, and Addie L. Bagby Byrns) were born in Augusta while William and Eliza operated the tavern. About 1883 William and Eliza Bagby (when 67 and 61 respectfully) traded the tavern for a farm in Adams County where they resided for several years. In 1885 they again located in Augusta, Illinois, were they spent the rest of their retired lives until 1908, when William Bagby died at the age of 91 and 1909, when Eliza Waring Bagby died several weeks before her 87 birthday. I think most are just named History of Hancock County. The earliest that I know about was in 1880 and was edited by Thomas Gregg. Next was in the early 1920s edited by Charles Scofield. There was another about 1968 and there is a new one just out which is a pictorial edition but doesn't have a lot of written word. There is also a Biographical Review written by Hobart that is quite interesting if you have your own people listed in the volume. That one is quite old and you may not find it available for loan. Information about all of these volumes is available at the Hancock County Historical Society as the 2 earliest books have been recently reprinted and are available for purchase. Too, they have volunteers who are available to do research for you at a reasonable price.

Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1090 Surname: ------------------------- I found the following in "History of Hancock Co. 1968" p. 315, which begins a history of Hancock Township (section authored by Vesta Holloway & Mildred M. Nelson). "The first settlers began their immiration to the township in the early 1830's. In the spring of 1831 a group known as the Bloyd, McCubbin-Rupe party, consisting of thirty settlers, came from Green County, Kentucky. These families erected log houses, as close together as possible, on the land they homesteaded, in what is now the Oak Grove neighborhood. Shortly after the planted their first crops, there came an Indian Scare in that part of the country. Immediaterly they abandoned their homes, taking only the absolute necessities with them traveling as fast as possible with their slow plodding oxen, they went to Beardstown, on the Illinois River to the east. This town, fifty miles away, was their closest post office.... Also on p. 324. "Bloyd-Belknap Cemetery was one of the first to be extablished in what is now Hancock Township. It is located near the center of Northeast Section 33, about a mile north of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Miller. John Bloyd, Sr., the "Patriarch" of the Bloyd-McCubbin-Rupe immigration party, died in 1832 and was the first person buried in this cemetery......In 1967 there are very few markers and tombstones remaining." I am not researching this family and have no further information.
