Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock?read=1114 Surname: SLUSHER, ALEXANDER ------------------------- In "Pioneers of the Prairie" compiled by Wilma Brunenn in 1984, she states on p.718 that Jeremiah and Mary (Lionberger)Slusher had "Ten children, those named: 1- Edgar, 2- Jennie Chamberlain, 3- Julia Alexander, 4- Charles A., 5- Ollie, died 1940". I do not know what sources were used by Wilma Brunenn nor how accurate they may be, however I noted that you only list 9 children in this family (not including an "Ollie"), and show Julia marring a Lionberger (possibly her "2nd" husband?). Since the information in your family tree that is linked to this query is very impressive in it's detail, I am fairly certain you have already investigated the above possibilities, but thought I would pass it on for your reference. I am not researching this family and have no further information.

    1. [ILHANCOC] Geo W Miller, Minister of Gospel
    2. HELP!!! Looking for info on my GG Grandparents George W (C) BEAT(T)Y and Caroline WESTBROOK(S). They were married Oct 17, 1865 in Hancock Co, and I rec'd a copy of both their marriage certificate, as well as a portion of the county marriage register showing their registration for a marriage license. They were married by GEORGE W MILLER, Minister of the Gospel. Unfortunately, their marriage certificate has very little other info on it. Does anyone know what church MILLER was associated with? Or did he perform marriages at various people's homes? The portion of the register they sent includes 6 other marriages performed by him between Oct 15 and Nov1 1865. I know nothing of either George or Caroline prior to the 1880s except this. I am trying to determine where they lived in Hancock Co., both before and after their marriage. They moved to IA sometime between 1880 and Jul 1882, from which point on I have them well documented. Any info on Pastor Miller? Thank You Gary Speck GTUSA@aol.com

    1. Smith Family Genealogy
    2. Hi! I am looking for information on a William Smith who lived in Hancock County, Il. before 1850. The 1850 Mortality Schedule for Hancock County shows that William died in January, age 50, Gabriella, his wife, died in March; and Austin their son, died Dec. 20 1849, age 24. They were listed as dying from "lung fever." I do have a list of his children. In the old write-ups in the Carthage Newspapers about the Smith Reunion, Caleb Booth Smith had a brother William Smith. Caleb was my great great grandfather, born in Virginia in Dec. 1801. He married Mary Ann Reuck in Jefferson Co., Ky. They came to Illinois in 1830. The Caleb Smith who lived in Shamrock is supposed to be a descendant of the old Caleb Smith's brother, William. If anyone has any information as to these people, I would be most grateful and would be happy to share information. I believe this William Smith to have a relationship with The Joseph Smith; perhaps through marriage. Thanks. J. Coleen Dochterman.

    1. [ILHANCOC] Re: ILHANCOC-D Digest V00 #123
    2. Hi! I am replying to Gary Nelsons inquiry on John Bloyd. I have written twice before and apparently you are not receiving them. BLOYD - In the spring of 1831, a caravan composed of something like thirty persons, reached their destination and settled in what is now Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois. These people had started the fall before, and spent the winter in Sangamon County, Illinois. In that party was an old patriarch, by the name of John Bloyd, and his faithful wife, Mary. After John and Mary were married in Baltimore, Maryland, John quit the sea, where he had been captain of a sailing vessel. We have no further record of him until 1806, when we find him living in the Northern part of Rockingham County, North Carolina, not far from the Virginia line. During the year mentioned, he in company with his neighbor, James McCubbin, an old Revolutionary soldier, with whom he had been intimately acquainted for a number of years, moved over the mountains into Kentucky, and settled in Green County, that State. Twenty-five yeaars after that trip into Kentucky, we find this same John Bloyd and his wife, though well advanced in years, at the end of another long journey, extended far into the wilds of Western Illinois. I would be happy to share more information is this is the John Bloyd you are interested in.

Il Bios Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockBios?read=11 Surname: Beech, Bradley, Cooper, Dickerman, Landon, Langley, Morris, Munson, Stiles, Whittacer ------------------------- My Ancestors Arthur Munson In 1634 the first Munson in America, Thomas Munson born in England in 1612, arrived in this Country on the sailing vessel "Elizabeth". In 1636 he helped lay out the city of Hartford, Connecticut and was the city's first townsman. Being a Carpenter, he helped erect many of Hartford's first buildings. Since he was active in public as well as religious affairs, he was placed in command of a company of soldiers in the Pequot War. He was a member of Mason's regiment of ninety men which surprised the fort of the Pequots near the present site of Stonington, Conn., at daybreak on June 5, 1637. The Pequots were nearly annihilated and the settlers had peace with the remnants of the tribe for nearly forty years. Thomas Munson died May 17, 1685. Samuel Munson, christened in First Church at New Haven, June 7, 1643, was the son of Thomas Munson. He married Alice Bradley on October 20, 1665. He plied his trade of tanning and shoemaking for several years in New Haven. In 1686, the first charter was granted to New Haven by Governor Dougan, governor of the colonies, and under this charter Samuel Munson became the first recorder of the city. He also served as the mayor of Albany from 1696 to 1698. He died in the spring of 1699. John Munson, son of Samuel Munson, was born January 28, 1672. On November 10, 1692, he was united in marriage to Sarah Cooper, daughter of Sergeant John Cooper. John Munson was a miller and was very active in public affairs. Joel, son of John Munson, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on August 18, 1702. On May 9, 1727, he married Mary Morris, daughter of Joseph Morris. Joel Munson plied his trade of miller at Mt. Carmel, (New Haven) Conn. Basil, son of Joel and Mary Morris Munson, was born in New Haven in 1730. On May 2, 1751, he married Wezia Stiles, daughter of Reverend Isaac Stiles. He operated a saw mill and later exported furs. He shipped as many as five hundred beaver skins in one year. For several years he was active in Indian and public affairs at Albany, New York. He died on November 17, 1803. Job L. Munson, son of Basil and Wezia Stiles Munson, was born in New England on September 26, 1752. He married Lucy Beech of Hamden, Vermont. He was a miller and a Protestant. He was killed by an Indian on June 10, 1828. Ebenezer B. Munson, son of Job and Lucy Beech Munson, was born in Vermont, September 14, 1777. He married Rebecca Dickerman of Hamden, Vt. He was a farmer and was a Protestant. Jerry Munson, son of Ebenezer and Rebecca Munson, and born in Hamden, Vt., on April 18, 1800, was a farmer and a pump maker. He was a Protestant. He married Abigail Whittacer, daughter of Dr. Whittacer. In 1821, he settled in Canada. After making a journey to Hancock county, Ill., in 1832, he and his family settled on a farm near Oak Grove, Hancock county, Illinois in 1848. John Munson, born in Canada in 1832, was the son of Jerry and Abigail Munson. He was a stock raiser and owned a farm near Oak Grove, Ill. He was a Methodist and a Democrat. 1. [ILHANCOC] NEWS BITS
    2. bobert
    3. Dear Seekers: Thought you might find a couple news bits interesting - from Volume XVII Number III, July 2000, Hancock County Historical Society Newsletter: In 1824, Fountain Green was known as Horselick Grove. In 1827, Oquaka, Henderson Co., IL, was known as Yellow Banks. [note: Oquaka is across the river from Burlington, IA] In Hancock Twp., Big Creek (Crooked Creek), was eventually named the LaMoine River... and the area around the river was known as Lamoine Valley. Thomas GREGG, started the first newspaper in Hancock Co.,in Carthage. The newspaper soon failed, GREGG moved to Montrose, IA, but moved back to Hancock Co. where he became known for his writing of local history. One of GREGG's newspapers was apparently named, GREGG'S Dollar Monthly. If the name implies the cost, no wonder he failed in the newspaper business - $1 was a lot of money in 1873 - there is an article quoted from that publication with that date. New acquisitions at the historical society: Fecht Funeral Home record book. Packet of information on real estate in Section 2 of St. Albans Twp. (St. Albans Twp. would be the Stillwell area) A book, LIFE OF JENNY HODGES. Genealogical information on HENLEIN and HOPSON families. Book, PRIDE IN OUR PAST, a history on Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. [Believe this is Carthage Memorial Hospital.] MENSENDICK Family History by Gary BURKOFFER. Information on Orphan Train Heritage Society and some of the prphans who rode the orphan train. NOTE: The Orphan Train was a societal phenomenal of sorts - it was to move the orphans and other children from the inner-city areas of the time to the 'healthy' rural areas of the U.S. The original idea was of good intent but many of the orphans - and just plain unwanted (for various reasons) children - whom were 'taken in by rural families' or adopted - were nothing more than work horses or slave labor for some of the families - no doubt, lots of horror stories involved in some of these 'cases'. There are a couple websites that address ORPHAN TRAIN - suggest you use a search engine and you will find data/info on this subject. According to the article, Charles BRACE, a Methodist minister who decided he wasn't cut out to be a minister, started "New York City's Children's Aid Society"...he thought it a positive step in taking care of all the children...and in many cases it was...approximately 10,000 orphans came to Illinois, but many more went to Missouri. The time frame is ca. 1854 - 1885, and on to 1910...and probably beyond (I don't have the exact dates nor do I know when the Orphan Train ceased to exist. Another name for some of the orphans and unwanted children - Sunshine Girls and Boys - was used by some of the people taking the children in. No doubt it 'set better' on their tongues and showed/justified in some small way, that they were providing 'sunshine' for the children... even while the children were made to do farm laborer work/chores/tasks that the adults either needed help with - it was a form of 'free labor' in many instances. - ---------------------------------------- Items for sale by the historical society: 1. Hancock County, Illinois Pictorial History New publication, June 2000 Picked up - $34.95 Mailed - $39.95 I suggest a money order be sent, if interested in any of the above... made out to HCHS, Box 68, Carthage, IL 62321. I believe personal checks are acceptable, also. Any questions on the above should be addressed to the HCHS - suggest a SASE for a prompt response. - ------------------------------------------------- Quotes from the Newsletter: When a man is wrapped up in himself, he is makes a small package. --------- 0 -------------------- Politicans and diapers have one thing in common. 3. Marysue, The first thing which came to my mind was Appanoose. This is the township north of Nauvoo along the Mississippi River in Hancock Co IL. I went to the website http://topozone.com & searched. I finally pulled up this (below my message) when I typed in Niota, IL (which is located in Appanoose township). Appanoose is written in various locations on this particular map. I'm not sure, but there may have been a town named that in the past. I have attended a women's presbyterial meeting many years ago at Appanoose Faith Presybterian Church somewhere in that vicinity. I wonder if it is near the Appanoose Cemetery on this map, but I'm not sure. It is listed at RR, Niota on the Hancock Co IL churches. http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/healthcare/h/church.html http://www.churchangel.com/WEBIL/niota.htm What time frame are you looking at? 3. Valerie, Thanks for the information. Yes, James Winters' original properties lay north of Hwy 101. We walked on that property at the time of the family reunion of all descendants a few years ago. The original deeds from the Governor of Illinois to James Winters are hanging in a multiplex in the Schuyler Jail Museum, the display a gift to the museum from James Winters' great-granddaughter, Irene Foster Dintelman. I'm not as familiar with the land you describe as south of the Crawford land, but those deeds may be among the others. Please let me know when you add the files to the Schuyler county & Headstone hunters websites.
