    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bev Cooke To: Shawnnee Ramey Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2000 8:49 PM Subject: Hancock County Historical Society Please pass along to the Hancock County website family: I have just returned from a genealogical research visit to Hancock County. The three days my husband and I spent in the Carthage/Macomb/St Mary/Plymouth area were very productive and enjoyable. This was due to the very gracious and ever willing volunteers who work at the Hancock County Historical Society, the county courthouse and the regional archives at Western Illinois University. Everyone went out of his/her way to pull files, offer suggestions, provide phone numbers, help provide identifications of some old pictures of ancestral home sites, and even provide plat maps which led to these sites. The custodian at Moss Ridge Cemetery even took the time to personally lead us to a number of grave sites of our great-great grandparents and other family members. The Museum connected to the Historical Society is one of the best of its type and size and we were really delighted to find such a well organized and comprehensive collection of artifacts related to the county and its history. Hancock County should be proud of its history and of it! s staff. There are many larger societies who could learn from their example!

    1. [ILHANCOC] Rabies???
    2. Does anyone on this list have a story similar to this? When I was growing up in the 1950s- early 1960s, I was told, by my Aunt Lee (Lelah Momberg Koeber), the following story: A little girl, in her long dress of the time, was on her way to school one day. Presumably it was in Oakwood, possibly somewhere east of there. This girl was attacked by a dog for an unknown reason. The dog tore at her long skirt. She stopped and "mended" the tear to her skirt by tearing the loose threads with her teeth. Within days, the girl died from "hydrophobia" or rabies. Since Aunt Lee was born in 1900 and her older brother in 1896, this probably took place (if at all) prior to 1912 or so. I've just always remembered the story although not the important parts, names, places, etc. Debby

ROY MUNSON PASSES AWAY THIS (TUESDAY) MORNING Well Known and Beloved Young Woman of Providence — Funeral Thursday Our hearts were saddened this Tuesday morning when the word reached here that life ended at one o'clock this Tuesday morning, June 2lst., for Mrs. Roy Munson who passed peacefully away at the Augusta hospital. This seemingly untimely call for one of our most dearly beloved and well known women of Providence neighborhood west of Plymouth, brings grief not only to the devoted husband, aged and heartbroken mother Mrs. Sadie Douglas, who has been called upon to give up all of her children and companions, and three children, Ruby, aged 13, Loyd aged 10 and Chellis aged 5 to whom the mother had bestowed the tenerest care of mother love, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Munson had not been well for several months, but the seriousness of her condition was not realized until a few days ago when she was taken to the hospital for treatment but despite the best medical care and attention her life work was finished and the end came at the hour stated. She was in her early thirties and up until early this spring had apparently been in the most robust health, looking well and never found complaining. She was of happy, jovial disposition, making and holding friends wherever she went. Her entire life had been spent in the Plymouth community where she was active in social and fraternal orders. She was a member of the Tri-State Lodge and other fraternal orders and was especially active in the Merry Home Makers club of Providence. Words do not convey the sincere and deep sympathy we feel for the entire family as their grief is also ours — for Lilly will be missed everywhere. Funeral services will be held at the Providence church sometime Thursday the exact hour having not been decided as we go to press. Hancock County Historical Society Carthage, Illinois A.E. 1927 Page 46 - --------------------------------- FRIENDS PAY PARTING TRIBUTE TO BELOVED WOMAN Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Roy Munson Thursday Afternoon. The sad funeral services held for Mrs. Roy Munson at the late home west of Plymouth, were attended by the largest crowd of devoted relatives and friends that was ever known on a like occasion in this community. Grief stricken friends who sought thus to pay their final and parting tribute to a woman who was loved by young and old alike, and whose passing into the Great Beyond brought distinct shock and sorrow to the entire Plymouth community. Mrs. Munson loved her friends, was happy in serving them but she manifested an unusual devotion to her home and her family and the ideal companionship between husband and wife has been a source of joy and inspiration to those who were in any way familiar or associated with this happy couple. Never was the task too big for "Lillie" to master, if it meant comfort for those who shared her home. As a daughter she bestowed tender care to the aged mother, as a mother and a wife, she was a perfect example and as a neighbor and friend she proved faithful and sincere upon all occasions. The outpouring of friends evidenced the high esteem by all for the departed one, who after all is not dead, but merely away — waiting for her loved ones. Rev. W. A. Taylor, pastor of the Christian church in Bowen, conducted the services bringing a comforting message to lighten the burden of sorrow. A quartette composed of Mrs. Edmund DeWitt, Mrs. Everette Swisegood, M. E. Young and John Bell sang three selections, “The Old Rugged Cross,” a favorite of the departed one, “God Will Take Care of You,” and “Going Down the Valley.” The hymns were beautifully sung. Profuse in number and lovely is .. (unreadable text) .. more than covered the casket. Casket bearers were Claude Huff, Herbert Carper, Glen and Loyd Castlebury, Grover Hughlett and Cleveland Mabry. The body was laid to rest in Irwin cemetery. The following life sketch was read by Mrs. Ivy C. Engle, at the funeral: At early dawn Tuesday June 21st the Angel of Death called from our midst a young wife and mother, Mrs. Roy Munson whose passing into that Great Beyond came as a shock to relatives, friends and neighbors. Although Mrs. Munson had been in failing health for the past six months she had only been confined to her bed about two weeks. All that loving hands and medical skill could do, was done but to no avail. Lillie Annie Douglas, youngest child of Sarah and Jacob Douglas was born at Quaker City, Ohio, January 11, 1893 and departed this life at the Augusta hospital June 21, 1927, aged 34 years, 5 months and 10 days. She was one of a family of four children; two sisters, one brother and her father having preceeded her in death. When thirteen years of age she came to Plymouth, Illinois, with her parents and was reared in this vicinity where she made many friends by her winsomeness of manner. To know her was to love her. She was a lover of church and Sunday school. On June 25, 1910 she was united in marriage to Roy W. Munson, three children came to bless this union: Rubie Mae, age 12, Lloyd J. aged 10 and Chellis R. age 5, who with the husband and aged mother and a host of friends and relatives are left to mourn the loss of a loved one. A precious one from us is gone/ . . A voice we love is stilled, A place is vacant in our home./ . . Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled/ . . The boon His love had given An though the body slumbers here/ . . The Soul is safe in Heaven.
