It is with profound regret we learn of the death of our former neighbor and personal friend, Wm. H. Earl, which occurred at his home in Middle Creek on the 5th. We had been intimately acquainted with Mr. Earl for over a half century, and never once during this long interval heard his character called in question. As a husband, father, citizen and friend, his reputation was irreproachable. We feel a sense of personal loss in the death of so old and so valued a friend. Mr. Earl was born in Floyd county, Va., 72 years ago. He had been a partial invalid for a number of years, and bore his long suffering with fortitude and resignation. 3. Posted on: Hancock Co. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/342 Surname: Butler, Earls, Gabel, Harding, Mannon ------------------------- Ernest Earl Commits Suicide by Hanging and Shooting Self. William Ernest Earls took his own life at his home northwest of Carthage, Wednesday, January 28th. The body was found by his youngest daughter Marie, who went to the barn to call her father to the house. He had fastened a new rope to the rafter of the barn and about his neck, mounted a pile of corn, then shot himself through the heart, and as he fell he swung off the corn, the feet of his dead body barely touching the floor. This shocking affair was caused by Mr. Earl’s uneasiness over the outcome of a suit against him in the county court. Wm. Gabel, of Elvaston, had brought charges against Ernest Earl and Harve Harding for assault with a deadly weapon. The alleged assault took place last fall, the charge being made that Earl struck the blow, and Earls claiming that Harding struck it. The complainant’s side of the case was heard Tuesday and Earls was so depressed over the damaging aspect of the case that he sought relief from the rest of the trial in this unhappy way. It was this trial that was preying on his mind. The deed was committed about 8:30 in the morning when the family were ready to come to Carthage to resume the trial. His cousin, Luther Earls, committed suicide on that farm five years ago. Ernest Earls, son of Henry and Susan Earls was born in Loyd county, Virginia, October 1st, 1877. He departed this life Jan. 28, 1925, at the age of 47 years, 3 months, and 28 days. He came to this county in the year 1900 and with the exception of seven years which he lived near Blandinsville, Ill., he has spent the remainder of his life in this community. On August 17, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss Abbie Earls of near Carthage, Ill. To this union were born two daughters, Alleyne and Marie, who with the widow survive him. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, Albert, of Virginia; Charles, of Grand Junction, Ia.; Edgar, of Ferris, Ill.; Anna Mannon, of Abingdon, Ill.; May Butler, of Firesteel, S.D. Three half sisters and three half brothers also survive him. His father and mother preceded him in death. Mr. Earls was of a genial kindly nature, very hospitable and his home was always open to his friends. He was esteemed by all who knew him and he will be sadly missed in his home and community. / . . "At God’s command he passed the/ . . . . shadowy gates,/ . . To reach the sunlight of the eternal/ . . . . hills. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in Carthage, Saturday morning at 11 o’clock, Rev. O. F. Slater, of Elvaston, officiating. Interment in Moss Ridge. P. & W TRAIN Luther B. Earls Struck By East Bound Passenger Sunday Morn- ing and Instantly Killed. Luther B. Earls, who is farming one of the DeHart farms near McCall, was struck by the east bound T. P. & W. passenger train Sunday morning and killed. The railroad cuts through the farm and he was walking down the track when struck by the engine. When he heard the whistle he evidently became confused and bewildered and failed to get off the track in time. The body was brought to Hearne's undertaking establishment, where a coroner's inquest was held, the verdict being accidental death. After the inquest, the body was taken to the home near McCall, where the funeral was held yesterday afternoon, with interment at Franklin cemetery. Luther B. Earls was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Earls, and was born in Floyd county, Va., August 8, 1880. The family came to this state later and he was here married to Miss Kunz on November 30, 1902. To this union were born eight children, six of whom survive with the wife — Joy, Blossom, Gladys, Frances, Lucile and Floyd. Mr. Earls was an industrious man and a good citizen, and his untimely death and the manner of his death has been a great shock to his family and friends. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/333 Surname: Alexander, Barb, Barbe, Beckwith, Currey or Curry, Ellis, Hadley, Long, McGee, Mort, Mosley, Munson, Parker, Pogue, Robinson, Sammons, Way, Weir, White ------------------------- Unknown newspaper source 3-12-1902 WEBSTER [Hancock County, IL] Again death has visited our community and called from hence to his long home one of our pioneer citizens. James Curry was born in Huntington Co., Pa., May 14, 1814, died at the home of his nephew, Alex. Ramsey, of LaHarpe, March 7, 1902, aged 87 years, 9 month(sic), and 21 days. He was married to Elizabeth Beckwith April 1846. He was preceded in death by his wife, four years ago. About seven weeks ago he went to visit his nephew above mentioned and there contracted a heavy cold which settled on his lungs and terminated in his death. About five years ago he sold his farm to A. L. Callihan of this city retaining a life lease for himself and companion, and although he had a good home, the old place lost much of its charm for him after the death of his companion, and consequently spent much of his time visiting amoung his relatives. Of these there are Samuel and Adam Curry and Mrs. James Marshall, of this vicinity, Mrs. Josiah Ritchey, of Carthage, also Norman Beckwith, of Joetta, who is a brother-in-law, Mr. Ramsey of LaHarpe, and James and Aaron Curry, of Colmar, nephews. The remains were brought to his home here on Saturday where they were tenderly cared for until Sunday at 2 p.m. when the funeral was held at the F. M. church conducted by Dr. Pugh, of Ft. Green. Mr. Curry was a lifelong member of the U. B. church and died in that faith. Thus an excellent man, free of heart and kind to the poor, has gone to his reward. His dear old form which was a familiar sight on our streets, will be missed by young and old alike, as "Uncle Jim" was a favorite with every one who knew him. Burial at the family lot beside his wife north of town. Peace to his memory. * * * * * On his marriage licence, James signed his surname as Currey and his tombstone says Currey. Most other references use the spelling Curry. He and Elizabeth Beckwith were married in 1845, rather than 1846. This obituary failed to mention James' and Elizabeth's adopted son who also died before James. James was buried in Webster Cemetery, along with his wife and adopted son.
