Posted on: Hancock Co. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/382 Surname: Campbell, Day, Hobart, Nestle, Wright, Yetter ------------------------- PASSING OF MRS. ELLA YETTER DAY OF MAJORVILLE Useful and Beloved In Her Community Mrs. Ella Day entered eternal life, Nov. 22, 1934, aged 69 years, 10 months and 25 days. The summons which called this very useful and greatly beloved woman from her family and friends came after a few days of intense illness. Suddenly seized with pneumonia she was hurriedly removed to the LaHarpe hospital, where skilled medical attention and devoted care failed to arrest the dread malady; and after a few days of suffering and distress she passed to her well earned rest and rich reward. Ella Yetter was the daughter of Lewis and Martha (Wright) Yetter, worthy pioneers of this community. She was born Dec. 27, 1864, and grew to young womanhood upon the Yetter homestead, now owned and occupied by her one surviving brother, Maurice Yetter, who with the sister, Margaret Nestle of Raytown, Mo., are the only surviving members of this favorably known family. On Sept. 9, 1880, Ella Yetter was united in marriage to William Day. They established their home upon a farm one and one-half miles south of Fountain Green, where they resided for sixteen years, then moving to the present home near Majorville Church. Seven children were born to them, two dying in childhood. Surviving are: Mabelle Day Campbell, of Macomb; Rubie Day Hobart, James and Lawrence of this community and Charlie Day of Arnold, Kas. There are also ten grandchildren. One by one these sons and daughters have left the parental roof tree to establish homes of their own, but with the exception of Charlie, they have all located near, gladdening father and mother by their frequent returns, and by their love and thoughtfulness greatly brightening the way as they journeyed down the western slope. On Sept. 9, 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Day celebrated their golden wedding. Relatives and friends from far and near, to the number of several hundred, gathered at Majorville to express their esteem for this worthy couple. It was a never-to-be-forgotten day, one long held in happy memory. The passing of this good woman, which brings such sorrow to her family, also brings great regret to many others. Her lovable traits of character endeared her to those with whom she met and mingled. She impressed them with her uniform kindliness, her ever-ready helpfulness, her gentle courtesy and her evident sincerity of purpose to be and do the right. Converted many years ago, she has long held membership with the Majorville church, and took her part and place in all church and social activities. She was an esteemed member of the Royal Neighbor lodge, serving the local order as the highest official, which position she long held ably, faithfully and acceptably. She was a charter member of the Majorville Social Circle. Posted on: Hancock Co. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/379 Surname: Boston, Cox, Kimbrough, Phillips, Wilson ------------------------- Mrs. Dicy Wilson Dies at Age of 101 Plymouth Scribe Lifes chapter closed at 8 Sunday evening, December 29, 1946, for Mrs. Dicy Elizabeth Wilson, who was probably the oldest resident of Hancock county, having celebrated her 101st birthday on last June 25. Peaceful and final slumber came at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Kimbrough in Carthage. During recent years she had shared the homes of her two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Kimbrough and Mrs. Ollie Kimbrough, at Carthage. There she was lovingly ministered unto during her decline in health being made as comfortable and as happy as was possible. Aunt Dicy, as the aged woman was long familiarly known to her many friends, had a remarkable constitution and up until some four or five years ago she maintained her own cozy little home in Plymouth, despite the fact she was then in the advanced nineties. The latch string of this pleasant home was ever open to kindred and friends. It was a great source of satisfaction that she could for many years provide a home for her younger grandson, Damon L. Boston, now of Portland, Oregon, who came purposely to visit Grandma just before the holiday season. The activities of her family members were always paramount in her life and their welfare her greatest concern. She lived quietly and harmoniously among her fellowmen, being ever helpful, kind and considerate, characteristics that were outstanding and admirable. The daughter of John and Permelia Cox Phillips, she was the last member of a pioneer family composed of nine sons and six daughters, most of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Her birth place was in Floyd County, Virginia, having been born June 25, 1845, the parents soon afterward coming to Illinois, locating in the Shiloh neighborhood, near Plymouth, where the family was reared. Although modern conveniences and modes of transportation of this scientific age were undreamed of in childhood, Aunt Dicy Wilson lived to witness the greatest century of all time. She was happily united in marriage to Luke Wilson, an energetic young St. Marys township farmer, their home being established in the countryside near Plymouth. There came to bless this union three daughters, Ella (Mrs. Sylvester Boston), whose passing several years ago was a deep source of sorrow, Jennie (Mrs. Dave Kimbrough) and Ollie, (Mrs. Frank Kimbrough). The passing of the devoted husband, and likewise in more recent years the demise of two sons-in-law, brought grief into her life. Two grandsons, Chellis Boston, of Burlington, Iowa, and Damon Boston of Portland, Oregon, were ever as rays of sunshine in her life. They reciprocated this devotion by being ever thoughtful of Grandma. She was also quite fond of Mrs. Francis Harrison of Denver, who was reared in the Frank Kimbrough home. The celebration of her hundredth birthday in 1945 was indeed an auspicious occasion and while she was quite frail on her last birthday Aunt Dicy appreciated the many kind remembrances. She had gradually grown weaker during the intervening months, life slowly ebbing away, the final sunset of her beautiful life coming only a few days before the close of another year. She leaves to cherish in blessed memory her good Christian traits so intricately woven in the pattern of life, the devoted daughters and grandsons, and many nieces, nephews and other loved ones and a legion of friends for to know Aunt Dicy was to love her. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 1, at 2, from the Elms in Carthage, many relatives and friends attending. Elder Lawrence Jones officiated in the services, the family having long worshiped at the Primitive Baptist church. There were many lovely flowers, each expression of love and sympathy being a source of comfort to the family. The remains were lovingly laid to rest beside the grave of her husband in Holland cemetery in St. Marys township, not far distant from Plymouth and not so far from the old homestead where so many happy years were spent. Surnames: BUTLER, METHENEY, MUNSON, OVENDORFF, WILES Hancock Whitecappers. Martin Ovendorff is an inoffensive old man who lives by himself in a cabin about three miles northwest of Joetta. For some reason, as yet undeveloped, he became the object of dislike to several persons of that country, and was subjected to continual annoyance. The matter culminated last October, when a crowd of men went to the cabin and engaged the old man in an altercation. He was badly handled, and the ruffians withdrew. They, however, were not satisfied, and returned. The old man was beaten with a rail in the hands of Wm. Butler, as alleged and his house wrecked. An soon as Ovendorff was able he came to Carthage and swore out warrants for the arrest of the following persons, implicating them in the affair: Lacey Munson, Tyler Munson, Ralph Munson, E. E. Metheney, Wm. Wiles and Wm. Butler. All of these men except Butler were found and waived examination before Justice Wetzel, and will tell their side of the story to the March grand jury. Butler escaped to Missouri. Last week Sheriff Helms was informed that he had returned, and was in the Crooked Creek country. After a few days skirmishing he was located and arrested in a Colchester restaurant last Wednesday evening by Deputy Sheriff Jay Helms. He is now in jail at Carthage awaiting the action of the grand jury. He will answer to the charge of mayhem, and the others to conspiracy.
