He was born in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Ill., June 27, 1855, a son of James A. and Amelia Ann (Boyd) White, born near Greenfield, Ohio, and grandson of Joseph and Maria (Armstrong) White, and William and Catherine (Hicks) Boyd. These grandparents were among the very earliest settlers of McDonough County, Ill., the paternal grandfather being a cooper by trade, who died at Colchester, Ill. After their marriage James A. White and his wife located on a farm in Tennessee Township, but sold it in 1873 and came to St. Marys Township, Hancock County, buying the John Wilson farm, the southeast quarter of section 7, for which they paid $30 per acre, and this same land is now worth $200 per acre. Their last years were spent at Carthage. Their children were as follows: Morris Armstrong, whose name heads this review; Laura, who was Mrs. Robert W. Botts, died and left four children; Martha Ellen, who is Mrs. Thomas Stevens, of Dallas City, Ill.; Catherine, who is Mrs. George Crump, of St. Marys Township; Nellie Bell, who was Mrs. Homer Walker, died and left four children; Alice May, who died without issue, was Mrs. Otto Wisenborn; and Mary Jane, who was Mrs. William E. Ewing, of Lawrence, Kans., had seven daughters and one son. Morris Armstrong White was married September 26, 1860, to Pearl Ewing, born in Hancock County, a daughter of George W. and Eunice Ewing, natives of Ohio and Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. White had the following children: Bert, who lives in Hancock Township; Fred, who lives in St. Marys Township; and Susie, who is a public schoolteacher. Mrs. White died February 25, 1898. On January 5, 1899, Mr. White was married to Mrs. Mary (Falder) Anderson, widow of William Anderson of McDonough County, Ill., who had a son, Clifford. By his second marriage, Mr. White has a daughter, Grace, who lives at home. Following his first marriage, Mr. White took up his residence on a farm of 120 acres in St. Marys Township, where he was engaged in farming until 1905 when he moved to his farm of 126 acres in Hancock Township and lived there for two years, and then spent three years on his St. Marys Township farm. Once more he came to Hancock Township, and here he has since been engaged in general farming and stockraising. He is a Democrat, and served on the school board for fifteen years, and as road commissioner for two years. An efficient farmer, and desirable citizen, he is regarded as a valuable addition to Hancock Township. I read somewhere that they were written up in the PIONEERS OF THE PRAIRIE, by Wilma BRUNENN, priv. pub. ca. 1985. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/401 Surname: Bryant, Hopkins, Kimbrough, Lane, Summers, Wetzel ------------------------- MIDDLE CREEK. Robert M. Kimbrough, was born April 30, 1844, was united in marriage to Almeda Bryant, December 19,1871 and died Wednesday evening, March 8, 1905, aged 60 years, 10 months and 16 days. His wife, one son, Dennis, and one daughter, Flora, wife of Lawrence Lane, are left to mourn him, his son Leo, having preceded him only five short weeks to the great beyond. This fact makes his death doubly sad for the devoted family and best of friends. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Hiram Bryant, of Missouri, Mrs. Summers, of Kansas, Mrs. Martha Wetzel, of Carthage, and Mrs. Adaline Hopkins, of Bentley, and two brothers, Wm., of Washington, and George, of Quincy, and three grand children. The departure of Robert Kimbrough is keenly felt in this community. He was the kindest of neighbors, generous almost to a fault, and all who entered his hospital home were sure of the same glad welcome. The funeral discourse was preached by Eld. L. E. Frazee at Middle Creek Baptist church to a large crowd of sympathizing friends, Friday at 11 a. m., and his remains were placed beside those of Leo, in Holland cemetery. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/400 Surname: Bryant, Kimbrough, Lane, Reuck, Thompson ------------------------- MIDDLECREEK. A Noble Woman Passed Away. Almeda A., daughter of Ambrose and Susan Bryant, was born April 19, 1847, and fell peacefully to sleep July 31, 1917, at 10 P. M., age 70 years, 3 months and 12 days. She was born at this old home and passed her entire life at this place. It was there she spent childhood's happy hours, and grew to young womanhood. On January 19, 1871, she was united in marriage to Robert M. Kimbrough. To this union three children were born Dennis, Flora and Leo. Leo, the youngest, passed away Feb. 1, 1905, thirty-five days afterwards, March 8, Mr. Kimbrough passed away, leaving a devoted companion. The deaths of these two loved ones were a great sorrow to her, one from which she never recovered, and in the passing years, she missed those loved ones with undiminished sorrow. She united with no church, but was a firm believer in the Primitive Baptist, and when unable to longer attend church the Messenger of Peace and Signs of the Times two Baptist papers, were her constant companions. Having lived in this vicinity all her life, her life was as an open book to all. She was a kind and indulgent mother, and good neighbor. Her nature was such that she could mingle with old and the young and all enjoyed being in her company. She was a woman of excellent traits of character and her home was known far and wide as a place where hospitality abounded, which showed her goodness of heart and her love for humanity. Her niece, Emma Thompson, now the wife of William Reuck, was taken into her home at the tender age of eight years. There she was given a good home and received a share of her love and kindness, and this niece was very devoted to her aunt. For a number of years Mrs. Kimbrough has been in failing health, but only bedfast the last two weeks. She leaves to mourn her loss her son, Dennis, and daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Lane, and four grandchildren and many relatives and friends. Funeral was held at her late residence at 2 P. M. Thursday, August 2, conducted by her pastor, Elder L. E. Frazee. It was attended by a large concourse of people. Burial in Holland cemetery in the family lot. We have to mourn the loss of one we fain, indeed, would keep; Beloved on earth, regretted, gone, Remembered as she sleeps. Audrey, I have a reference, Hills Grove, Illinois, Its Early History, written by my great-aunt, Elva Gilchrist Rinehart, which gives a biography of a Dr. Asal Owen, whose father was William Owen. Asal was born in Mason county KY in 1792. The family moved on to Champaign Co OH. Asal Owen and his wife, Elizabeth Cowden Grafton, "moved from Ohio into Indiana and from there to Illinois. They arrived at Graves mill, Hancock county, in 1840; in a short time crossed over the line into the Hills Grove settlement..." The biography lists children and other information. If you believe these connect with your line, let me know. Mary Jane White Audrey Ulm wrote: > I am very interested in any type of information regarding the family of > William M.
