Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/432 Surname: Boston, Davis, Driskell, Hughlett, Meaux, Mosley, Porter, Robinson ------------------------- Sarah Frances Mosley was born in Hancock county, Illinois, June 7, 1850. Her parents, Armstead Mosley and Nancy Driskell Mosley were among the early pioneers of the county having emigrated from Kentucky to Hancock township in 1839, where they settled and continuously resided during their long and successful lives. Both lived to a ripe old age, leaving a family of ten children whose names in the order of their ages follow: Mary E. Porter, Martha J. Robinson, William V., Winston R., Simeon A., Samuel F., Sarah F. Porter, (the deceased) John F., Nancy, A. Ellis and Amanda E. Meaux. Only two survivors of the family are left, viz, Mrs. Martha Robinson of Webster, Ill., and Mrs. Amanda Meaux, of Carthage. On the 28th day of September, 1870, the subject of this sketch was married to Edwin Guin Porter. To this union were born the following children, who, in order of seniority, are: Mrs. John W. Davis, Mrs. Samuel H. Boston, both of Hancock county; Miner C., of Macomb; Merrill D., at the parental homestead in St. Mary’s township and Mrs. Josie Hughlett, of Carthage. Two other children, Blake and Lelia, died in infancy. Her faithful and loved companion passed away a number of years ago. A year ago, deceased sustained an injury from a fall from which she never recovered. This injury was followed by a complication of various ills which, despite the attention of the best medical aid, and the kind and faithful ministrations and encouragement of family and friends, failed to stay the hand of the Grim Reaper who released the longing spirit from its pain-racked tenement at 8 o’clock p. m., on the 11th day of April, 1925. In her girlhood, Mrs. Porter united with the Christian church at Oak Grove and lived a life consistent with her profession until called to her reward. Dear mother, sister and friend will be sadly missed from the home council, and from the long-enjoyed society and companionship of a numerous circle of loving friends; yet none of these would recall to her suffering couch the spirit now flown to its realms of eternal rest and happiness. On Easter Eve, in answer to her prayer, “O, Dear Lord, please release me” — her last words uttered in expiring agony — the spirit of our loved one took its flight to the home of Him, who, too, had drunk to its dregs the bitter cup of pain and anguish and had gone to prepare “mansions in the skies” as a home for his suffering children of earth. Dear one, we hope to meet you in that blessed home. Until then, farewell! The funeral services conducted by Rev. Mavity, of Carthage, were held at Elm Tree church on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with all the immediate family and many other relatives and friends present. The interment was at Holland cemetery by the side of her loved companion and little ones. The funeral discourse was well-timed and strikingly applicable to the home and social relationships of our times as well as replete with comforting thought and encouragement to the bereft family and friends of deceased. The song service, beautifully rendered by Miss Eulah Couchman at the organ, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Faulkner, Miss Clara Reed and Mr. Forrest Pittenger, was well chosen and appropriate to the occasion. D. 3. Posted on: Hancock Co. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/431 Surname: Bales, Boston, Davis, Mosley, Mourning, Porter ------------------------- EDMUND GUIN PORTER A well-known farmer and trader, passed away at the family residence in St. Mary's township, one mile east of Middle Creek, at half-past two o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 25, 1903. Death resulted from sarcoma after a confinement of thirty days. An autopsy conducted by Dr. Littlefield, the family physician, and Dr. McDaniels, of Plymouth, confirmed the diagnosis previously made by Dr. Littlefield. Mr. Porter's health had been gradually declining for the past three years, but, as he had worked hard the greater part of his life, his failing health was attributed more to over-work than to the possible existance of any fatal malady. His abandoning work, however, failed to bring about the recuperation hoped for, and he declined so rapidly during the summer that he had since been under constant medical treatment until death relieved his suffering. The subject of this sketch was born at Hillsgrove, McDonough Co., Sept. 6, 1843, hence, on day of death, had reached the age of 60 years, 2 months and 19 days. He went west when about 18 years of age, and, to gratify a roaming disposition which seemed to possess him in early manhood, he traveled quite extensively over the mountain and Pacific slope states for seven years when he returned to the land of his nativity better equipped by reason of his western travels to battle with those rougher elements and obstacles of life which a man of an active nature and pronounced personality by sheer persistence provokes to rise up against them. His father and mother died some 25 years ago, leaving seven children of whom John N., of Carthage, Ill.; Mrs. Lydia Bales, of Lake City, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Mourning, of Tennessee, Ill. are the only survivors. On September 27, 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Francis Mosley, of Middle Creek. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. Minnie Davis, Lealie, Mrs. Musa Boston, Miner C., Merrill D., Blake and Josie. Lealie and Blake died in infancy. The three eldest surviving children--Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Boston and Miner--reside at their own homes not far from the parental roof, leaving Merrill just entered upon the estate of manhood, and Miss Josie, 16 years of age, by their mother's side to aid and comfort her in this sad hour of bereavement. Mr. Porter united with the Christian church at Oak Grove about 25 years ago, with which church he retained his membership until the day of his death. On Friday, Nov. 27, after an able and appropriate funeral discourse at Elm Tree M. E. Church by the Rev. Sherman Hill, pastor of the Christran church at Carthage, the remains were born to the Holland cemetery and laid to rest by the side of "Lealie" and "Blake" under the auspices of Plymouth lodge of the Masonic fraternity, into which order Mr. Porter was initiated some 30 years ago. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends witnessed with tear-dimmed eyes, the sad and impressive rites conducted by his brother Masons. After marriage, by force of will power assisted by the material aid and wise counsel and encouragement of a frugal, devoted wife, who to him was a help-meet indeed. Guin abandoned his roving habits, and directed those masterful energies characteristic of the man to the acquisition of a home and its comforts--none of which he possessed when he entered upon life's unequal warfare. In this he was more than successful for by perseverance, good judgment and attention to business, he gained quite a handsome competency. A stern, unyielding, yet conservative individuality stamped his every act and undertaking. Rainbow chasing was not one of his weaknesses. For him visionary or get-rich quick schemes had no facination. He took no time to build air-castles, but laid his plans for future action with deliberation and discretion. "It is not ease, but effort--not faculty, but difficulty that makes men"--in this we find his cardinal rule of action. In the death of Edmund Guin Porter, his loving wife has lost a faithful, devoted husband; his children an indulgent father; the community, a good neighbor, constant friend, and valued citizen. Triboulet: Obituary Mr. Jos.P. Triboulet died at his home in Appanoose township Wednesday evening of last week, of congestion of the brain. Mr. Triboulet was born in French Co., France, April 25, 1837, and came to Nauvoo (Hancock county,IL) in 1848 with his parents, sister and three brothers, and has resided in the city and vicinity ever since. In 1864 he was married to Miss Isabel George, who survives him together with four children, one daughter,Madge, and three sons, Homer, George, and Julian, and also has three brothers. Mr. Triboulet was a prominent and highly respected citizen and his irreproachable traits of character endeared him to his fellow citizens. Unassuming in the way of display, he was always striving to do good, and his unexpected and untimely death was heralded throughout the community with many thoughts of profound regret and sorrow. He was a manly man in every sense of the word. Deprived of enjoying the fruit of life's work, in old age, he was compelled to "approach his grave, like one who wraps the drapery of his coach about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. Such men are hard to spare from any community, but the will of the Maker was honored and another shining ornament was removed from our midst. May he rest in peace. The funeral took place from the Catholic church Friday afternoon, a large community of friends following the remains to the cemetery. Rev. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/423 Surname: Cox, Wilson ------------------------- Aunt Una Wilson died at the home of her son Luke, three miles north of town, last Saturday morning. Mrs. Wilson was born in Floyd county, Va., December, 1810, and was in the 94th year of her age. Her death was caused by no well defined disease. The machinery of life, worn by nearly a century of useful activity, ran slower and slower, and finally, worn out, stood still. We had known deceased for more than fifty years. She was a kind, motherly woman, always ready with a kind word or a kind act. She was a woman of simple and regular habits of life, her only indulgence being a great smoker — a habit she kept up to the last. She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for more than fifty years. Her husband, Joshua Wilson, died in 1864. She was the mother of seven children — Luke and Aris, who reside in this vicinity, and Mrs. Jackson Cox, who resides in Harmony township. One of her sons was a soldier during the civil war, and was a prisoner at Andersonville. He died shortly after he returned home, from disease contracted during the service. Owing to some technicality, his mother was unable to get a pension, which was finally granted to her by a special act of congress. Hancock County Historical Society Carthage, Illinois Book K Page 44 - ---------------------------------- Mrs. Una Wilson, widow of Joshua Wilson was born in Floyd county, Va., Dec. 12, 1810. Her husband was a son of John Wilson, a well known pioneer settler of the west side of St. Marys township. He died in 1864. She was a remarkable, industrious, energetic woman, until disabled by age and infirmities. She raised a large family. Two of her sons, Avis and Luke reside in this township. She makes her home with the latter. Her son John was prisoner at Andersonville and died shortly after the close of the war from privations he suffered while a prisoner. She was granted a pension by special act of congress of $12 per month, there being some technicality by which her claim was barred under the general pension law. She is a great smoker and finds much consolation in her pipe in her old days. She has been for many years a worthy member of the Primitive Baptist church. She has a comfortable home with her son and family from whom she receives the kindest care. ALPHA BOSTON IS HELD HERE SUNDAY Services Held at 2:30 at Ostrich Funeral Home Celestia Alpha Holland, youngest daughter of Mildred T. and Alfred L. Holland, was born on a farm southeast of Carthage, Illinois, Aug. 8, 1872, and passed away at her home near Carthage, Friday evening, May 20, 1938, at the age of 66 years. She attended the country school until the age of eleven years, when with her parents she moved to Carthage, where she entered the public schools and completed the course. She attended Carthage College one year, then taught in the rural schools of the county for three years. On Sept. 19, 1895, she was united in marriage to Dr. E. R. Boston, a young dentist of Carthage. To this union were born three children, Minerva Hope dying in infancy, Reubena Mildred, wife of Albert Spickler and Cornelia Frances, wife of Eugene Yetter, who have been the constant joy and comfort of her life. Mrs. Boston was left a widow when her daughters were quite small, but she educated them in the Carthage high school, Carthage College and Gem City Business College. She joined the Methodist church at the age of eleven years, and was baptized in Crooked Creek, now Lamoine river, near the Allen Wilson home, by the Rev. R. A. Brown, her pastor at that time. She lived a sincere Christian life, loyal to the church, and active in the different departments as long as her health permitted. She is survived by the two daughters, who with their husbands, mourn for a dear and loving mother, gone from among them, but not forgotten. Her many friends and neighbors are saddened by her sudden death. She had not been strong for several years. She was so brave and patient that her friends didn’t realize that her life on this earth was so nearly ended. "Not now, but in the coming years,/ . . 3. Posted on: Hancock Co. Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/416 Surname: Boston, Holland ------------------------- Dr. E. R. Boston, who had been ill at his home in this city for two weeks with quinsy and heart trouble, died Tuesday morning, May 27th, at 5:30 o’clock, aged 40 years. The death of Dr. Boston comes with peculiar pathos. He was the only son of his widowed mother, the beloved companion of his wife and the adored father of his two little girls. His business life was quiet and unostentatious, but in the home circle he was the one about whom all other interests centered. He loved his family and he loved life, but he was not unaware in his last illness that the end was approaching and met the conditions with fine courage. After a weary night of suffering during which loved ones did everything in their power to relieve him, and just as the day was dawning, he asked his attendants to move him so he could get the view out of the window. His eyes feasted for a moment upon the beauty of the May sunrise and his soul seemed to ride forth upon the wings of the morning, for the end came very quietly in the glory of a new day. Ellis Reuben Boston was born March 20, 1873. He lived on a farm east of Carthage, where he finished a course at the country school. At the age of 17 he entered Carthage college for two years. In the fall of 1893 he entered the Northwestern University of Dental Surgery from which he graduated in the spring of 1896. It was while a student of Carthage college he met the sweet and gentle Celesta Alpha Holland, who became his wife the year before he graduated from the dental university, their wedding occurring Sept. 19, 1895. During his work in Chicago he was stricken with inflammatory rheumatism which affected his heart to an extent that he thereafter was a great sufferer and subject to alarming attacks of illness. In spite of this handicap he opened up a dental office in this city and in partnership with Dr. G. K. Fleming, practiced dentistry for fourteen years. The profession being especially taxing to his health he sold his interests to Dr. Fleming and bought the dry goods stock on the north side which he conducted with success to the time of his death. This business will be continued by Mrs. Boston. Three children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Boston, Minerva Hope, who died in infancy, Reubena Mildred, aged 13 years, Cornelia Francis, aged 11 years. He leaves to mourn his loss a mother, the wife and two daughters and a number of other relatives. He was converted at the age of 17 in a union meeting conducted by Rev. Mr. Williamson held in the Lutheran church. He united with the Presbyterian church and remained a loyal member until his death. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Dr. J. F. Young officiating. The services were attended by representatives of all of the business firms of the city and there were beautiful flowers to add their evidence to the esteem in which he was held. The interment was at Moss Ridge. Card of Thanks. We wish to express to all who so kindly ministered to us in our time of bereavement, our deep appreciation and gratitude. / . . Mrs. E. R. His father, Geo. Boston and mother, Mahala Boston came here from Kentucky in 1832 in company with a number of others, who were the early settlers of this county, but who have passed to their reward. Mr. Boston was married on June 20th, 1866, to Susannah G. Kennedy. For a number of years they lived on the old homestead five miles southeast of Carthage, but for fifteen years have lived in their home on Wabash Ave., Carthage, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Boston were the parents of three children: Amey Francis, born June 20th, 1867; Solomon Kennedy, born July 14th, 1869, and Ellis R. born in 1873. The first and second of these died in early childhood, while the youngest together with the wife and other relatives are sad today for his going. Mr. Boston was converted during special meetings at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Alex Patterson of Chicago, in 1894. He united with this church shortly after and has been a faithful member since. One incident of his conversion is worthy of note as it was out of the ordinary. A day or two after he had surrendered to God, he came into the chapel where the meetings were being held, and Dr. Patterson said to him, "How are you today Mr. Boston" and he replied as he dropped to his knees in prayer, "I am just as I am," and immediately everyone began to sing: / . . Just as I am without one plea/ . . . But that Thy blood was shed for me/ . . And that Thou bidst me come to Thee/ . . . O Lamb of God I come, I come. / . . Just as I am and waiting not/ . . . To rid my soul of one dark blot/ . . To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot/ . . . O Lamb of God I come, I come." A little while before he died his loved one asked him how he was and he replied, "I am just as I am, but because of my frailty I cannot now fall upon my knees and pray. / . . "A precious one from us has gone/ . . . A voice we loved is stilled/ . . A place is vacant in our home/ . . . Which never can be filled/ . . God in his wisdom has recalled/ . . . The boon his love had given/ . . And tho the body slumbers here/ . . . The soul is safe in heaven." Il Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/HancockObits/414 Surname: SHORE, KESSELRING, RINEHART, MILLER, BROADHEAD ------------------------- James K. Shore was born near Hubblesville, Huntington Co., Penn. Jan. 20th 1838 and died at his home in Hancock Township May 3rd, 1912, being 74 years 3 months and 13 days of age. He was the oldest of a family of 7 children, Three brothers, Calvin, Eli and Simeon and two sisters, Mrs. Maria Rinehart and Mrs. Miller have preceded him in death; one brother, Jesse L. Shore of White City, Kan., is the only one who remains. He was united in marriage Feb. 20th 1862 to Sophia F. Ill., in 1855 and the next Spring came to Hancock Township living for 2 years on his uncle’s place, they then moved to the adjoining farm which has been his home for 43 years. Like the early settlers they experienced both the hardships and satisfaction that came to those who with their own hands changed the timbered lands into a well-tilled farm and a comfortable home. He has not been strong for several years but his last sickness was of only a few weeks duration. In early manhood he gave his heart to Jesus and tried to walk in the path that leads to life everlasting. He and his wife were two of the group of Christians who formed the church at Hillsgrove in the early seventies when regular services were first instituted; he has served his church as a Trustee for a number of years and also as a S. S. Superintendent and when his health would permit was regular in attendance. He has left to his relatives and friends the richest heritage that any one can leave the sacred memory of a devout Christian. His last sickness was attended with little suffering and he was visibly happy as he crossed into the Beyond. Besides a large circle of friends who will miss him there is left one son, Clayton L. Shore, his wife and three grandchildren, Gilbert Shore and Vera and Marie Broadhead. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. B. Green at the residence and interment was made at the family cemetery near Joetta on Sunday May 5. =============== >From an unknown newspaper; typed as it appeared. Unsubscribe The marriage license often doesn't but frequently there is a form called Return of Marriage License that was attached to the license and return following the ceremony to the county clerk for filing. It has parents names and much more. Stephen
