    1. [ILHANCOC] TOWN OF RAMUS
    2. bobert
    3. Dear Seekers: >From THE HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTY, Edited by Charles J. SCOFIELD, 1921, pg. 671, is the following data on the town of Ramus, Hancock Co., IL: [My caps for surnames] Ramus - Was a Morman town, laid out in 1840, by Wm. WIGHTMAN, and settled largely by the Mormans, having at one time 400 or 500 inhabitants. It was sometimes called Macedonia. It is now Webster. The history of Ramus is more clearly shown by an act of the General Assembly in force March 3, 1843, for the incorporation of the town of Macedonia. Section 14 of the act appoints Joseph E. JOHNSON, WIlliam McLEARY and Benjamin ANDREWS to conduct the first election for the seven trustees provided for in the act, and requires the persons elected to organize by electing one of their number president and by appointing a clerk, and then provides that this board of trustees shall prescribe the mode of conducting all elections after the first election, and that "the town of Ramus, from and after the passage of this law, shall be knwon and designated as the town of Macedonia". It thus appears that this particular municipality was first known by the name of Ramus, and that this name was afterwarded changed to Macedonia by act of the General Assembly. It is probable that this change of names had in fact been effected before the act was passed, and that the act was passed to give validity to the new name and to confer corporate powers accordingly. This is suggested by the first sentence of Section 1, which enacts that the inhabitants and residents of the town of Macedonia are made a body corporate and politic in law, by the name and style of the "trustees of the town of Macedonia." At a later date the name of the town was changed to Webster, by which name it is known at the present day. The population of from 400 to 500 inhabitants which Ramus or Macedonia had in Morman days ws greatly reduced by the exodus of the Mormans. -------------------end of data-------------------------- According to Wilma BRUNNEN in PIONEERS OF THE PRAIRIE, priv. pub. ca. 1985, pg. 803: "The Jonathan WEBSTER family was living in the Webster community before 1850. It is thought the community was named for him as he was influential in getting the Webster school built. - ------------------------------------------------------ Probable Fact: Once the Mormans left the Nauvoo area and Hancock Co., names they had given places/communities were changed to 'erase' whatever influence and the memory of the Mormans ever being in that area/county of Illinois. The irony of the above is that today, the long-ago presence of the Mormans, their homes in Nauvoo as historical sites, the old Carthage jail and gravesite of Joseph, Hiram, and their mother, are what brings tourists to the area. The Temple at Nauvoo is being re-built. This is having a direct increase in economic development in Nauvoo and nearby areas such as Hamilton, due to contracting out to local artisans who can still make items such as sash windows and the like, the way the early Morman settlers did. Kind of boggles the mind to imagine that Nauvoo could have been something like Salt Lake City is today. Have great days and peaceful nights! Shirley: bobert@panacom.com

    1. [ILHANCOC] Blankenship
    2. Hello Everyone, This is my first post to the list, and it isnt a very good one. The reason being is that I am looking for my Calvin BLANKENSHIP without much to go on. I am sending this to the Illinois lists because I am thinking that since his wife was born in IL and her parents in TN, that maybe the Blankenship's moved from TN to IL, then to MO. Unfortunately I do not have last names for the women born in IL, but I figure that if I start shooting in the dark long enough, I will hit something. I estimate the Blankenship's migrating to IL after 1825. I found Calvin BLANKENSHIP married to DELIAH on the 1850 Texas County, MO census. Living next door to Calvin is WILLIAM BLANKENSHIP and his wife, PAMELA JANE. Since Calvin was only a couple of years older than William, I have to assume they are related, if not brothers, because they were the only Blankenships in TExas County at this time and they were both born in TN and both of their wives in IL (just thought that was interesting). SInce Calvin Died during the civil war (there is no record on him except a muster roll, since he was a confederate), he wasnt around when the government started asking where their parents were born. I followed Deiliah until 1880. I estimate her time of death between 1881-1883. I followed William, and he lists his parents as also being born in TN ..... although its a shot in the dark, is there anyone out there that has a link to a BLANKENSHIP's that had a son named Calvin, (who was born abt 1820-25) and/or William (b. abt.1823-1826). I do not have Calvin's parents names or their wives maiden names. I am hoping to connect them to someone who might be able to shed some light on this for me .... Thank you in advance!!!!

I have had to reword and rework the guidelines for the CENSUS-LOOKUP mailing lists and also include subscription instructions. I am sending these below. The lists have been growing like crazy since I created them three days ago and I expect the growth to continue as the word spreads. Please feel free to forward this to anyone you feel may be interested in joining. Of course the more people we have the more help we will be for each other. Please keep in mind that we are only a few days old and if your lookup request is not answered, try again in a week or two. Some of the state lists have already reached over 150 subscribers <G> Others have not been "advertised" as much and have fewer members. Hang in there and don't get discouraged if your not answered right away, these lists will be a great asset to our research after we reach the people and let them know that these lists are available. I am encouraging everyone to send this email to their surname and county mailing lists as well as to our cousins. Finally, If you have the material to help a fellow researcher, please use it. Thanks, Kelly Kellygirl3398@mpinet.net (Subscription information at the end of this e-mail) Guidelines for posting to the lists: Established 11 October 2000 EMAIL SUBJECT LINES: COUNTY,YEAR,SURNAME NO FLAMING or you will be unsubbed without notice. By this I mean not only being rude or mean to each other but there will be NO and I do mean NO debating here about the Census Projects. This list is for everyone who wants to research. NO General requests such as "all Smiths in all counties" Be specific, Name the County, Family you are looking for and also the year. Try to supply as much info as possible. LIMIT your requests to ONE PER CENSUS YEAR and SURNAME My Mama taught me that Thank you and Please are always nice too :) A few people have emailed me asking how to sign up for the new lists and what to do. - ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. All lists are XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com The XX is to be removed and the two letter abbreviation for the state you are looking in added in its place. Examples: MI-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com CA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com IL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com 2. So, send an email to the one of your choice (make sure to have the state). Put NOTHING in the subject line. In the body of the email write only: subscribe Then send it on :) 3. POSTING to the new census lists: A. Send it to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com (supply the two letter state code for the XX again) B: Subject line MUST have the following: County/Year/Surname Example: Saginaw/1850/Smith C: In the body of the email: List whom you are looking for. 3. Posted on: Hancock County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Hancock/1262 Surname: ------------------------- I found your message on the GenBBS forum for Hancock County, Illinois from March 1998. Since no response or follow-up is posted, hopefully the following information helps: Job Jones married Mary Adaline Longcor 19 November 1874 in Adams County, Illinois. This date is found in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. Job was the father of their children you mentioned, and according to a secondary source (Ancestry World Tree), died 15 October 1896. Mary Adaline Longcor was born either on 13 April 1859 or 13 March 1860 in Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois (I cannot yet be certain which of the two dates are correct) to George and Amanda Howard. She was married a second time to Ren (or Wren) Washington Hudson, and they had one son, Everett Cleveland Hudson, born 10 February 1893. This presumes a divorce between Job and Mary Adaline, or else an incorrect death date for Job listed above. Mary Adaline died 22 July 1941 in LaGrange, Missouri, and is buried near her second husband in the cemetery in Palmyra. I did not have a birthdate for Job, so for now will use yours. I do not know who is his parents were. I would appreciate knowing your sources for the dates listed in your message. Although all my sources are secondary, I have cross-checked them with all kinds of secondary sources (Census records, Internet family trees, LDS databases, etc.) and feel reasonably certain that they are reliable. My wife is descended from Mary Adaline's parents, George Longcor and Amanda Howard, through Mary Adaline's sister, Abigail Caroline Longcor (1863-1943). Feel free to contact me if you would like more information on the Longcor family.
