    1. Re: [ILHANCOC] Books are in!
    2. Hi there, Would it be possible to tell if there is any reference to the early Williams (Peter and Rebekah or their son Elijah) or Waggoner (Rebekah or her brothers John, Gershom and Gad) families of Commerce city (now Nauvoo)? (Early, as in 1830's and 1840's) I would love to buy the book, but want to be absolutely sure my family will be in it. Thanks! Valerie In a message dated 2/21/2004 9:47:41 PM US Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: According to an article in yesterday's Quincy paper, the books are $80. each with an additional $5. if you want the book mailed. Send the funds to P. O. Box 68, Carthage IL 62321. Additional info can be had by calling the historical society at 217-357-0043. I'm surprised that they can get by with only $5. for the size of the publication but perhaps it is because it is a book. As with anyone who is writing "history", I have found an error about one who is a remote part of my family but only the sequence of her marriages and then another in the family that they just indicated it was a "her" without a name. But there is a lot of very good info in the many pages of the book and worth the price, esp. as the years go by! How I wish I had a copy of the Hobart bio book which was done many years ago.

    3. Thanks Shawnnee! I have been trying to get in touch. Yes, I am a HARRISON and a HOWES descendent. My mother was the daughter of George Washington HARRISON and Ida Belle HOWES. John A. HOWES and my 2nd great grandfather Wm. W. HOWES were brothers--the sons of Reuben HOWES (1795-1868) who is buried in Green Plains Cemetery and Anna Allnutt HOWES (1795-1827) who died in Bourbon Co. KY when Wm. W. HOWES was an infant. Along with many other Marylanders, Reuben and Anna migrated to the Bluegrass area of KY shortly after their 1816 marriage. After her death Reuben remarried 3 times in KY and had more children by each of those wives. Around 1846 Reuben HOWES moved from KY to what he described in one of his letters back to relatives in MD as "eight miles southeast of Warsaw in as beautiful a country as your eyes ever beheld--Kentucky not accepted". Most of his family eventually joined him and many went even farther west. His 5th and final marriage was to a widow in Hancock Co. in 1856. You may be interested to know that Reuben also wrote "John lost his first wife, had one child, he then married a Miss Elen Brittenham" Madonna ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shawnnee Ramey" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 21, 2004 5:01 PM Subject: Re: [ILHANCOC] Green Plains Cemetery, Wilcox Township > Hi Madonna, > I got a call from Dan this morning and he would like your phone number or if > you would like to call him that is fine too but he has lots of minutes on > his cell phone.. 3. Mary, interesting thing about this Clark/Mt. Vernon thing. I'm going to have to get the plat book out to see where this Clark cemetery is supposed to be! I'd sure like to find out if there is a connection between Margaret Clark and Isabella McCoy though. They both arrived in the US about the same time and it all seems so likely that they are sisters. It wouldn't be all that far across the countryside between the Browning cemetery and the Mt. Vernon one. Those McCoys have quite a life story to tell according to the info I found at the historical society. Loved the new CBS logo!! Caused quite a stir, didn't it? 3. Shawnnee, Eleanor Huddleston HAMILTON's husband was Jason HAMILTON who died in KY before 1840. Elen moved to Hancock Co. with her daughter and family shortly after 1850. Her daughter Ruth Hamilton HOWES' tombstone reads "Died Dec 6, 1893 Aged 70y 9 mo 26 days". I calculate her birthdate to have been 8 Feb 1823. Ruth HOWES was the wife of Wm. W. HOWES (1826-1903). Four of their children are still buried at Green Plains and a fifth child, my great grandfather John T. HOWES, was buried there in 1914. His body was later exhumed and moved to Oakwood in Hamilton. The children of Wm and Ruth HOWES buried at Green Plains are: 1. Logan HOWES--tombstone reads "1848-1919"(in lieu of 1929) 2. Ellen A. HOWES (1852-1855) 3. Robert W. HOWES (1860-1883) 4. Charles W. 3. Shawnee, Thank you for posting the Mt. Vernon/Baptist cemetery in Rocky Run Twp. It is such a small plot that it is easy to inventory. Some of the information that you have is a bit outdated but the area is still being mowed by a neighbor who is a decendant of the Clark family buried there. The old iron fence has been taken down and the poison ivy which loved the support of the fence has been gone for several years. True, the cemetery is being mowed with a field mower but it is accessible and being tended. A person can drive right up to the stones which is nice, too. I would love to find someone who has more information about Margaret Clark than I have. She is my gggrandmother and she was born in Ireland. I have been helping find information about those buried in the Browning Cemetery in Harmony Twp. and there is a woman buried there that I have such a very strong hunch might be a sister of Margaret. Her name was Isabella McCoy and she came from Ireland, too. The years fit that they might be sisters and they both named children with similar names which was common at that time. If anyone has information about these two women that might prove my hunch right or wrong, I'd love to hear from them. Thanks again for putting all of this on the 'net. What a help! And, thanks, too, for putting the website along with the info. Makes it so much quicker to access the sites. Mary

    3. Shawnee, Thanks for your efforts in completing this Green Plains Cemetery posting. I visited Green Plains in September and found the tombstone for my 3rd great grandmother, Elen (Eleanor)Huddleston HAMILTON, 2 Nov 1797-8 Sep 1876. It appears to have fallen over many years ago and is imbedded in the ground not far from its base next to the tombstone of her daughter and son-in-law William W. and Ruth Hamilton HOWES (in the back part of the cemetery). In all likelihood the mower is clearing this rock. I was delightfully surprised especially since I was aware her grave was not listed on the records I had obtained through the HCHS. I can email a very clear photo of this tombstone to anyone who might want to see it.
