    3. Shawnnee & all; You have touch on something that I found years ago.ie. that the information on death certiicates is only as good as the person who is giving the information, knowledge of the family history. Also while I am at it census information can also be off if data is given by a non family member. I also found an error in ILL. Marirage index a small one but it is there and could throw someone off tract. . It list my Grandmother as Effie Mildred(should be Matilda) COOPER. So much for my soap box. 2. Shawnnee and all others, Your discoveries are very interesting and provoking in terms of trying to get the facts straight. Although I cannot disclose the actual facts because my father is still living, I am faced with a similar situation. His birth certificate is recorded in Hancock County, Illinois. However, he has told me that he and his brother were both born in St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. Because their uncle was either the doctor who delivered them or involved with the deliveries, he had their births recorded in Illinois. Just a quirk perhaps but something that also adds to the mysteries we deal with in trying to delve into the truths involved with our pasts. Debby

    3. The newspaper in Carthage, the county seat, might have carried the obit, too. Hancock County Journal-Pilot. It may have been the Hancock County Journal at that time. I don't recall the date when they became the Journal-Pilot.

    3. The Nauvoo Newspaper is "Nauvoo Independent" for most years but it may have been the "Grapevine" or something like that for part of the time. You can check by going to the newspaper archives in Springfield. I have done it but don't have time to go find the site right now so can't quote it exactly. Good Luck. 3. Hi Shawnee, I am interested in your Ursula Thompson from Indiana. You didn't mention dates. I have Thompson's that came from Indiana to Hancock Co.. John Thompson b abt 1795 KY d. 8 Oct 1872 married on 24 Dec Jackson Co., Holland Indiana to Elizabeth Langley b 1808 KY died 22 Dec 1861 Fountain Green Hancock Co IL. Their second child Philander married Sarah J. Yetter on 8 Sept 1859. I don't know when they moved from Indiana, but I believe it was between 1840 and 1850. I think Elizabeth's mother (Fanny Langley) was said to have lived with her when she died, but I haven't found a gravesite for her or an obit. His family comes from Floyd County, Virginia. I haven't found any relation of these Earls to the John Earls from New York. Ancestors of Luther B. Earls Generation No. 1 1. Luther B. Earls, born 08 August 1880 in Floyd, Floyd, VA; died 16 May 1920 Near Carthage, Prairie Twn., Hancock, IL. He was the son of 2. John Wesley Earles and 3. Rhoda Caroline Lester. He married Elizabeth Phylena Briley Kimbrough 30 November 1902 in Illinois. She was born 14 January 1883 in Near Carthage, Hancock, IL, and died 12 December 1949 in St. Joseph Hosp., Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of Thomas James Briley and Sarah Frances Kimbrough. Generation No. 2 2. John Wesley Earles, born 1853 in --, Floyd, VA; died 06 January 1931 in Carthage Twn., Hancock, IL. He was the son of 4. Gordon Cloyd Earles and 5. Julian Elizabeth Turman. He married 3. Rhoda Caroline Lester 16 November 1879 in --, Floyd, VA. 3. Rhoda Caroline Lester, born 1848 in Floyd Co, VA; died 10 February 1926 in Carthage Twn., Hancock, IL. She was the daughter of 6. Fleming W. Lester and 7. Permelia Ann O'Bryan. I am descended from Gordon Cloyd Earles' brother, Henry Harrison Earles. For some reason, several families moved to Hancock County in the mid 1800s. Gordon's brother, William H. Earles moved to the Middle Creek area. Then John Wesley moved bringing some of his children. Some families from Floyd Co. are the Hurts, Earls, Lesters, and Cravens. I don't have info on all these people, just know they moved to the area. My own great-grandfather, Charles E. Earls, son of Henry H., lived there for a short period abt 1910, but my great-grandmother died, Matilda Hurt Earls, and he moved. Will write more later. Since Luther is not a direct ancestor, I don't have a whole lot of info on this side of the family. Others on this list probably have more.... Paula Earls [email protected]

    2. Shawnee....Yes, Leo does live in Warsaw and has for many years. He loves to talk genealogy. One name can trigger him to remember anecdote after another about almost any name you can give him. Like I said his memory is phenominal. Leo's parents were Oliver Clone and Velva Marie Starr Kimbrough. His wife is Virginia Happs Kimbrough. She was born in Warsaw and graduated high school there. I have hundreds, literally hundreds of Kimbrough's in my file. I use the Personal Ancestry File that I downloaded from the Family Search website. I love it as it is so easy to use. My data base is quite extensive, not only with the names on Mother's side of the family but on my Father's side also. So whip a name on me! :-) I probably have someone by that surname. :--) I would love to exchange data with you at some point in time. I know that you are very busy with the cemetery lists. As a matter of fact, I have been copying off the cemetery lists for Leo also. I have a binder that I am keeping them all in for myself and I mail them to Leo and he is thrilled to have them. He has been studying them very carefully. I live in Northern California in a little place called Magalia. It is in the foothills above Chico, California. Chico is only about a 25 minute drive from my home. Where do you live? I believe that Leo will be donating all of his data and pictures to the Hancock County Historical Society at his passing. He and I have discussed this many times. He wants to share what he has. At one time he told me he had over 2,500 copies of pictures in his files. He taught himself to take pictures of the old pictures that he found in his searching. Sometimes he would see a picture on a wall and tell the people that he knew who that was. Startled they would then open up and tell him all he wanted to know and allow him to take pictures of their pictures. I did contact the Historical Society and Kathleen Burnett wrote back that he needed to put in writting what his wishes were. She did not express an interest in going to talk to him though. I believe that if someone would do that they would find that he is a font of information. Some of his stories about people are very funny while others are sad. He remembers the night that, I believe his name was Fred Gillenwater, shot and killed a young woman and Leo's father taking a gun with him to help find the man. Leo is just full of stories about the "olden" days. I loved hearing from you and would like to hear from you again as you have the time. Elva Carle Haughey

    1. [ILHANCOC] Burial data.....
    2. Shawnee....I sent your Unknown Burials list to my cousin, Leo Kimbrough. He has been researching families since the early 1960's. He has researched many cemeteries and I was sure he would be able to tell me where some of these ancestors were buried. I will enclose excerpts from his letter to me dated March 16, 2004. Bear in mind that Leo will be 83 in August of this year. "The Fannie Festus Earls, died May 7, 1978 in the Montebello Nursing Home in Hamilton. She was married to Wadsworth I. Earls. She was the daughter of Kit Koontz and Sarah Frances Kimbrough Koontz and is buried with her husband in Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage." "Fannie's half sister, Elizabeth Phylena Earls, 1883-1949, was married to Luther B. Earls who was run over by a train in 1920. He was a brother to Waddie. Phylena's maiden name was Briley." "The Ross Earls listed here is a son of Fannie. He was a house painter. He is buried in Moss Ridge cemetery." "Now the Kimbrough's, William and Rebecca. They are buried in the Old Brick Cemetery which is located in Carthage Township, Section 35. Rebecca is the daughter of Tamer Preston. Tamer is buried in the Harmony Cemetery. I found her stone early on but when I was there in 1995 it was no where to be found. The Joel and Thomas listed with her are her sons. Thomas is in Harmony Cemetery, but his stone is lying on the bround and broken across the middle." "Joel Preston is in his own cemetery whis is located in Section 6, St. Mary Township. To get there enter the township from the four corners on the west and between sections 6 and 7, go a short quarter mile east, cross a small bridge and up a slight grade, then look to the left, the cemetery is about a block north of the road. This cemetery has not had a fence around it in 60 or 70 years that I can account for." "Eve Martha Tucker is a daughter of Tamer Preston. She is also located in Harmony. She and Ben have a large red stone to the right and near the center of the cemetery." He continues: "I should know where Ernest Ancelet is buried, but I can't remember. His mothers house is one block east of me (Warsaw, Ill.) where she lived with her two daughters. Ernest's small farm is just south of the fair grounds." Leo was my Mother's first cousin. My Mother was Marie White Carle. I found Leo about 3 years ago and he has been furnishing me with mounds of data that he has collected over 40 years of research. He did all of his research the "old-fashioned" way. By crossing and re-crossing the United States on his vacations to visit our ancestors as soon as he had a lead. He has at one time or another talked to our ancestors of the times that they traveled by covered wagons. I feel he was so lucky to have been able to talk to these peoples about their travels and the hardships they endured. Most of us do not have the opportunity that he did of talking to them to garner bits of our history. Leo is a delight to talk with and his memory is phenominal! I hope this helps all in some small way. Sincerely, Elva Carle Haughey
